From the very beginning, Kung Fu Panda had me practically falling out of my seat — laughing. It was the perfect blend of comedy, heart, and action, all necessary elements in a successful and great animation/CGI film, in the tradition of The Incredibles and (less action, but containing the heart and laughter) Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

I was laughing, smiling, and guffawing at Po, the main protagonist (voiced by Jack Black) and his misadventures at becoming a Kung Fu expert. This was certainly a flawed character, one that a lot of people can relate to because he dreams, he’s funny, and he can laugh at himself. Also, the story was pretty clear and easy to follow because the storytelling was well crafted, and the animation was paired well with characters brought vividly to life by some of the most famous names in Hollywood.

Jack Black and Dustin Hoffman are downright excellent as the main characters, and Ian McShane as the bad dude gave it the right fearful presence. Other big name stars don’t shine as much, but that’s because their roles are rather limited in the film. But that’s still okay because the animators should be given equal credit (if not more) for delivering the funny, action and heart elements of this movie in an effective, amazing and (I’ve got to use this) AWESOME manner. Visually, this movie is stunning (notice all those scenic shots of the Chinese mountains, bodies of water, and the bridge scene; not to mention the action animation version of “The Matrix” with slow-mo)… simply a delight to watch.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Kung Fu Panda! Click Here

It’s clear that Dreamworks has gotten back in the animation game with Kung Fu Panda, after slight ho-hums in Shrek 3 and Bee Movie (call me crazy, but I liked Over The Hedge more than those two). Hopefully, it should earn well over $500M worldwide because it is so good.

This movie rightfully belongs in the top animation movies of all time (okay, let’s not include the classic fairy tales of old; let’s begin with the 90’s onwards), alongside my faves “The Incredibles” “Finding Nemo” and “Beauty & The Beast.” Has the makings of being a classic.

Enjoy!

With deep foreboding, I walked into this movie braced for second rate animation (at least compared to Pixar), endless fights between cartoons (as in the CGI “Clone Wars”), and a cultural sensitivity that was either painfully preachy (like “Mulan”) or outright insulting (like “Aladdin”).

At first, my dread seemed confirmed. Poor Dustin Hoffman mangles Chinese names without mercy - so much so that James Hong, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan have to deliberately mispronounce stuff just to match what he says.

But once the movie got rolling, I found myself grinning from ear to ear in sheer delight. Yes, it’s true, Dreamworks can’t compete with Pixar’s technology, but they make up for it with beautiful graphic design, sheer wit and - of course - those hilariously quivering “Scrat Eyes”. What’s more, the animators somehow manage to make Kung Fu battles between cartoons both exciting and enjoyable - every bit the match of live action fights (which nowadays are nothing more than CGI with faces pasted on).

However, the most remarkable thing about this film is how faithful it is to Chinese culture - family dynamics, Buddhist philosophy, values, and even martial arts - this film simply HAS to have been written by Chinese. There is never a moment where it strains to “score points” with political correctness. Its characters are never tediously noble “anti-stereotypes”, but are instead lovingly depicted with all their flaws intact while uniquely Chinese messages are delicately hidden within a plot crammed with excitement and laughter. Here you experience how parental love turns into suffocating pressure, here you see teenage rebellion as a monstrosity rather than a virtue, here you see the quirky characters of a city (complete with that wobbly “bound foot” walk), here you hear the wisdom of Zen detachment, and here you experience the sacred relationship between student and teacher.

Perhaps my opinion is biased by the surprise this movie gave to my low expectations, but I can’t help but see this film as an unappreciated but precious gem. Now if only someone could do the same thing with Islamic culture…!

This movie is much more than an outrageous and unique comedy. One reason for its cult following has been consistently missed by the critics: repeated viewings reveal surprising layers of meaning and an intricate web of symbolism.

At the heart of this film is the timeless debate known as “nature vs. nurture”: are we more a product of our genes, or of our environment? How much of an effect does our upbringing have on our likelihood to turn out as either a law-abiding member of society (a society which in this movie is of dubious merit, as represented by Hi’s job and his unctuous boss) or as a criminal deviant from its norms?

The symbolism in this film is rich and evocative–while always contributing to the comedy. Note how often the adult characters cry and carry on like infants. Note the way the escaped convicts are “born” into the outside world. Note the marriage of a convict and a police officer, and the difference in their families visible in the brief wedding shot. Note the juxtaposition of milk poured over cereal with the infant’s feeding bottle, as Evelle observes, “Ya don’t breast feed him, he’ll hate you for it later. That’s why we wound up in prison.” And note the frequent use of phrases such as “that’s natural,” as opposed to “you’re not being true to your nature” or “mother didn’t love me.” As Hi observes, “maybe it’s my upbringing, maybe it’s just that my genes got screwed up, I don’t know.”

The quasi-biblical, poetical and aphorism-laden language the characters use in the-state-adjacent-to-Utah is both touching and funny. Every word of the film is a finely polished gem. Ed’s little plan is “the solution to all our problems, and the answer to all our prayers.” Her infertile womb is a “rocky place where my seed can find no purchase.” And as Hi later writes in a touching letter to his dearest Edwina, “I feel the thunder gathering even now…I cannot tarry…better I should go, send you money, and let you curse my name.” On the other hand, the crotchety Arizona characters also have a remarkable literalness of expression. A packet of balloons does not blow up into funny shapes, not “unless round is funny.” And as the old codger in the bank robbery points out, “If I freeze, I can’t rightly drop, and if I drop, I’m gonna be in motion!”

Even the music in this film is perfectly executed, from the hilarious yodeling and whistling of the main theme to the way the chilling accompaniment of a nightmare is later revealed to be a haunting children’s nursery song, and then mutates into an ethereal melody in the film’s final scenes. The characters, despite their flaws, are all surprisingly sympathetic. And the film is tightly constructed, without a single unnecessary scene or moment. It ends with a bang, not a whimper, its final words resonating with significance and yet leaving one wanting more, like a swift exit after a great punch line.

At the deepest core of this film lies a mystery wrapped in an enigma: who is the once-orphaned “motorcycle demon from hell,” and what is his relation to Herbert I. McDonnough? The answer to this puzzle relates intimately to the “nature vs. nurture” theme. While I think I know the answer, I’ll leave it for you to figure out, based on the clues (”show the tattoo!”) liberally scattered throughout the film. “Okay then!”

I’ve seen Raising Arizona far more times than I can count. It is, in my humble opinion, next to Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove the most original, inventive comedy ever made.

The dialogue is absolutely razor-sharp — plenty of examples are certainly readily available in the reviews preceding this one — and the camera work is wonderful, as well. I’d rank Raising Arizona a VERY close second to Miller’s Crossing in a list of the Coen’s best films. It is admittedly not as visually stylish as Miller’s Crossing (then again, very few films ever made are), and the storyline is not as cohesive as Miller’s Crossing, Fargo, or Barton Fink. However, the film is so full of verbal gems that it definitely ranks as the Coen’s best dialogue writing effort. Cage and Hunter are wonderful, and John Goodman and William Forsythe are absolutely perfect as the Snopes brothers.

Admittedly, the DVD is nothing very special. All you really get is the more durable medium and a widescreen format. Some kind of “The Making of…” mini-documentary, or better yet, a commentary option with two or three of the actors, the director of photography, or ideally the Coens themselves would have been a priceless addition to the DVD.

Bearden really practiced DuBois’ views on double consciousness. He blended African sculpture with cubism. He used pointilism and applied it to black American subjects. He portrayed the urban and rural landscapes.

Still, I have some questions. Danny Glover reads quotes from the artist. Bearden was not a Harlem Renaissance painter. He died in the 1980s. He was around after talkies. They show films of him in color. It’s not like he was Shakespeare. Surely they could have shown clips of him speaking for himself. They never say he was mute or had problems in front of the media.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Art of Romare Bearden! Click Here

Mr. Bearden was so light-skinned that I didn’t know that he was African American until well into the documentary. Eventually they show his parents and his mother looked white. One interviewee described him as “light-skinned” but then the subject is never brought up again. Why not? Malcolm X spoke often about what it was like to be light-skinned and have a white grandparent. Bearden had a light complexion but his subject matter always covered people of African descent in rich ebony and cocoa hues. One could ask why he never portrayed subjects of his own complection.

I’m sure that Bearden was a terrific artist. But anybody with a pair of scissors can make a collage. In a similar vein, I wonder why David Hockney is praised when anyone can take the photographs he has. I wish the documentary explored on a deeper level what was so special about Bearden’s collages or what else did he make besides collages.

Street of a Thousand Pleasures is basically one long excuse to ogle naked women, which it allows the viewer to do very well. The plot is very thin, an American (played by John Tull of Sassy Sue and Midnight Plowboy fame) saves the life of a sheik, who in gratitude reveals his harem, which is basically a hundred girls standing around naked. It seems like the film was originally intended for 3-D, as the camera zooms in and apparently up against breasts, belly buttons, etc. This film does have some simulated sex, with tons of frontal nudity. Despite this, it eventually gets tedious, Tull’s character wanders from one room to another looking at the girls, which he’s more interested in than actually having sex with the girls throwing themselves at him. Uschi Digard and Michelle Angelo are in the film briefly, the rest are a mix of cute and skanky.
Mondo Topless is your basic 60’s T&A, with no frontal nudity and not much in the way of plot to recommend it. The extras are good if sometimes a little odd, mostly 60’s nudie type stuff. Breast Orgy does have some full nudity although like Thousand Pleasures gets tedious after a while.

Is the guy who wrote the previous review dead or somethin’? How could looking at hundreds of different naked women ever be boring? Street of a Thousand Pleasures has some of the most beautiful women you’ll ever see in a movie, period. I was expecting Way Out Topless to be more like Russ Meyer’s Mondo Topless (a classic of the genre) so I was a little dissapointed but there’s plenty of vintage teasin’ action to be seen. Pasties and g-strings are the thing here, bub!

This is a great giallo horror film, and Dario Argento has finally returned to full form with this latest effort. The fact that this disc is not only a full-frame version of the movie (making it look like a cheap 70’s television show, with grain and “stretched” framing) but is also probably a R-rated cut of the film– and we’ll never knoiw because Artisan gives absolutely NO information on the film’s specs and there is NO extra features on the disc– is really disapointing. This is a poor bare-bones DVD release of a spectacular new horror thriller by one of the masters of the genre. Too bad Artisan once again fail to recognize greatness when it’s right in front of them and dish out crap like this to customers who want better DVD products for their money. For Argento fans and DVD collectors, this is just another slap in the face by Artisan Entertainment. Be careful when buying Artisan DVD’s from now on. You usually don’t get what you pay for (I.E. see the recent Ginger Snaps Artisan DVD compared to its Canadian counterpart that actually HAS extra features to see what I mean). A truly pitiful DVD release of a great horror film. That’s why I gave it a 2.

Dario Argento’s stylish and ultra-gory giallo is a return to form for the maestro and will definitely please his long-time fans. Unfortunately, it looks like Artisan’s upcoming DVD will be FULL-FRAME only and not widescreen as previously announced(…). So buyer beware. If you really want to see “NONHOSONNO” in it’s correct aspect ratio, pick up the Italian DVD instead (if you have a region-free player) because it is uncut, letterboxed and has an english track. Obviously Artisan is just releasing their “Sleepless” version as just another cheap horror title to fill up Blockbuster shelves. Unbelievable that even in 2001 Argento is still treated this way in the US. No wonder he stays in Italy.

How is it that this show isn’t better known? “Jyu-Oh-Sei” is an 11 episode series that manages to stomp nearly every full-length sci-fi anime series out there in spite of it’s briefness. At the end, it seems impossible that such an epic and perfectly-paced storyline could be over so quickly and leave such a large impression. That is a true testament to the writer and the director of this series. Guaranteed to thrill any sci-fi fanatic.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jyu-Oh-Sei! Click Here

The story begins as a simple revenge tale. It takes place in a human colony in the Balkan star system hundreds of years in the future. Our hero Thor and his twin brother Rai (both 11 years old at the start) are mysteriously kidnapped after discovering that their parents have been murdered. They are dropped off on the planet Chimera, which is a world used by the colonists for capital punishment. The worst criminals are abandoned there and are either soon dead or wish they were. The planet is as harsh as they come; monstrous plants are the top of the food chain and a single day and night cycle takes an entire year. Half of the year, the plants flourish and the planet is one massive carnivorous jungle and the other half is complete darkness and Siberian weather. Great setup.

Thor soon learns just how harsh Chimera is. It is kill or be killed; but he soon finds that he has an uncanny knack for survival. He also finds that there is civilization on this harshest of planets. The people of Chimera are a tribal lot broken up by skin color into a series of clans known as Rings. Each ring is lead by a Top, a Second, and a Third with the Top position being decided by single combat within each Ring. If a Ring’s Top is able to defeat each of the other Rings, he becomes the Beast King and is able to return to the colony. In other words, if Thor wishes to return home, solve the mystery of his parent’s death, and exact his revenge he has his work cut out for him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jyu-Oh-Sei! Click Here

“Jyu-Oh-Sei” would already be an outstanding series based on premise alone. The planet is so intriguing a setting and the characters so strong that it could have cruised almost indefinitely without losing the viewer’s interest. But the story flies by with amazing velocity, even jumping several years ahead at one point. It’s got places to go and people to see, that’s for sure and not one minute is wasted. The show is merciless and unpredictable -which it displays very early on- and filled with twists and turns of the best kind. Even though a savvy viewer will likely soon suspect which character is pulling the strings, the purpose remains an unsolvable mystery until the final episodes which feel like an all-out mental assault on the viewer as bombshell after bombshell hits. The final act is absolutely amazing and jam-packed with pure genius. It’s extremely easy to lose track of the mysteries altogether as you become wrapped up in the intrigue, romance, and drama of the story, which makes the effect of the barrage of revelations even more shocking. Without any major spoilers, I’ll just hint that perhaps the world where mankind’s forsaken are sent may in fact be their only hope for survival. Like I said, epic.

While the price of this set is pretty exorbinant considering the small number of episodes, it’s well worth it if you’ve got the bucks. This is a top-flight work of science fiction that should enthrall both anime newcomers and veterans who’ve seen it all. There is no weak link in this series; every aspect seems to have achieved near-perfection. I was legitimately sad to see it end; but that feeling may have been partly because of the cheap shot near the end that seems to have no purpose other than to break the viewer’s heart. Cheap shot aside, “Jyu-Oh-Sei is animated sci-fi greatness. All who profess to love the genre must not hesitate in seeing it.

I agree with the other two reviews…Why is this series not better known? Even though it’s over far to soon it covers a lot of ground in the 11 episodes. Seeing as how it’s a short series you hit the ground running so to speak. While the story moves forward there are flash backs but none of which take to much time. They have done an excellent job with filling you in along the way.

How ever between episode 5 & 6 there is about a 3 year gap. At the end of one episode he is about 12 then the next episode he is going on 16. Yet it blends smoothly and does not leave you with that feeling of “Huh..what just happened?”

This series is well worth your time…It is something that I would recommend and I do not just like anything…I enjoyed Trinity Blood - Black Blood Brothers..Hellsing…Death Note…etc. This hovers right at my top ten and if you liked any of the aforementioned then you should enjoy this. There is blood just not over the edge and as for language..I do not really remember anything that send up a red flag.

Over all it’s a 4-1/2 star series….enjoy.

This is a nine-disc set of most of the director-writer-actor’s films under the control of MGM/Fox. Six of them - Silent Movie, History Of The World Part 1, High Anxiety, To Be or Not to Be, Twelve Chairs, and Robin Hood: Men with Tights - are making their Blu-ray debut in this set. The other three included films - Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Spaceballs have already gone Blu. This is exactly the same content as the standard DVD set The Mel Brooks Collection (Blazing Saddles / Young Frankenstein / Silent Movie / Robin Hood: Men in Tights / To Be or Not to Be / History of the World, Part 1 / The Twelve Chairs / High Anxiety) except that Spaceballs is in this Blu set and not in the Standard DVD set.

The discs are housed in a book structure with each disc going bare into a slot on a page - kind of like last year’s Borzage Murnau set? With all of the scratched discs? In other words, this looks like another packaging nightmare from the folks at Fox/MGM who seem to keep doing this to their prestige sets to the great chagrin of consumers.

In summary, the content looks great here, and the price is more than reasonable, but the packaging I’ve seen does scare me at this point. The scary packaging is the only reason I’m subtracting one star at this point.

This is a musical remake of George Cukor’s classic “The Philadelphia Story”. The new setting: the Newport Jazz Festival and the chic mansions on its surroundings. The story is exactly the same: Tracy Lord (Grace Kelly in her last film) is engaged to David (John Lund). But her ex-husband (Bing Crosby) won’t let her go that easily. In the between, there are a couple of journalists (Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm) with problems on their own.

This is one of those films where everything is great. The whole cast is excelent. This is classical Hollywood in full gear!!

The music by Cole Porter will leave you singing for days after you see this movie: “Well, Did You Evah?”, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”, “Little One”, “You’re Sensational” and the multi-million Dollar seller “True Love” are great tunes. The film has also a five-minute overture with music that is usually cut by television (great music!!!).

This DVD comes with a great pack of extras. But first… the image: gorgeous Technicolor (it was shot in VistaVision). The beautiful soundtrack was remastered in Dolby 5.1 (it seems it was recorded only 10 years ago). There is also a documentary on Cole Porter hosted by Celeste Holm herself! (still beautiful after all these years). There is a newsreel about the film’s premiere, Radio adds with Grace Kelly and Bing Crosby, Trailers (from both “High Society” and “The Philadelphia Story”), Notes ……….and a great Cinemascope Cartoon “Millionaire Droopie”.

The only bad thing about this DVD is that the subtitles dissapear during the songs (and there are 3 languages).

Anyway… this a great film with all the elements at their peak!

Given the lack of fuss made over the centenary year of Bing Crosby’s birth, it appears that, as far as the public at large is concerned, Bing is little more than a Christmas period piece. This film should help set the record straight about the most influential vocalist and entertainer of the first half of the last century. His feature number with Pops (”Now You Has Jazz”) is a treasure, presenting two of the most naturally gifted, closely matched American musicians simply enjoying each other’s company while becoming completely caught up in the musical moment. Satchmo absolutely shines (sometimes that smile could betray traces of auto-pilot, but not in this film). And Bing’s got that thing going with his head that was the hallmark of his most genuine, inspired, heart-felt performances: he’s way back on his heels and everything above his shoulders takes on an animated, even “pixillated” quality. No longer is he being merely smooth and easy (and singing certainly did come easy for him), but his head is illustrating the beat, in that curious, punching, out-of-synch pattern that he had whenever he was really feeling it.

The Sinatra performance is also solid, but there’s plenty of good Sinatra elsewhere on film. What’s unique about this film is his “Well, Did Ya Evah?” duet with Crosby. For years they had been radio rivals, the “old pro” favoring crowd-pleasing “smooth and easy” tunes and the skinny new star emphasizing more urgent and dramatic material appealing to the personal emotions of a new generation. Crosby is the “natural,” capable of all sorts of graceful vocal elocutions and tricks; Sinatra is the driven, serious modern man, executing musical material with a no-nonsense approach. At one point, when Croz goes for one of his elegant swoops, Sinatra retorts, “Don’t Dig That Kind of Croonin’, Chum.”

But despite their considerable differences, and despite Crosby’s dominating screen presence (perhaps for the last time in his career), the two wind up as arm-in-arm, complementary musical partners for what indeed is one of the swellest parties in the history of film.

This is a factual naval aviation story, intermixed with Army Air Corps rivalry and combat scenes. It provides a chronological view of one naval family- their love and adversity, including Navy and Army aviators supported by their loyal maintenance personnel who helped in the advancement of U.S. military aviation during 1920s to 1940s. Add, of course, a mixture of competition provided by the navy wives and their only rival- the United States Navy. Released 22 February 1957, The Wings of Eagles was considered an adult story, wrought with the thrills, laughter, and family hardships all to well experienced by the real heroes of this story- the pioneer naval aviation wives (there is still no “Hall of Fame” dedicated to these gallant ladies at the National Museum of Naval Aviation, NAS Pensacola, FL).

Ms. Maureen O’Hara who acted the gallant part of Mrs. Minnie (Bryant) Wead was well received by the “naval aviation wives of gold”, and was nominated at a Naval Aviation Cadet Recruiting Officers Convention, Long Beach, CA, as “Ms. Naval Aviation- 1957.” Other familiar actors included: John Wayne (CDR Frank “Spig” Wead), Kenneth Curtis (RADM John “Johnny” Dale Price), Dan Dailey (Chief “Jughead” Carson- loyal Chief Aviation Machinist’s Mate), Kenneth Tobey (characterization of Lieutenant Jimmy H. Doolittle), Ward Bond (representing Hollywood director John Ford), Edmund Lowe (RADM William Adger Moffett, USN- Chief, Bureau of Aeronautics), and Charles Trowbridge (representing ADM Ernest J. King) whose one line was: “I like it…write it up”. The railroad boxcar scene, the hangar fly-through, the various odd aircraft shown, the newsreel aviation reports of winning the Schneider Cup of 1923, the loyal efforts and contributions by the aviation maintenance personnel keeping the aircraft flying were all real events. Today’s aspiring military aviators may find this aviation story of much interest.

This story may bring tears and some fond memories back to those pioneer naval aviation wives who are still around and had experienced it all. Their stories can relate back to the days of sugar white sands at Santa Rosa Island and of Coronado Beach; the babies they lost from the 1919 flu influenza; the open-air jalopy rides down old Warrington Road and Coronado Avenue; the screened front-porch bungalows of Bay Front, Pensacola, and Coronado Island; the seaplanes skimming across Pensacola and San Diego bays; meeting their husbands as they landed in their squadron fighters and torpedo planes following short at-sea flight operations aboard USS LANGLEY (CV-1); followed by the many naval aviator and bridge parties given at Mustin Beach and North Island officers’ clubs- all this on just a naval Lieutenant’s salary (with flight pay) to make ends meet during the Great Depression.

This is an MGM/ John Ford contribution to those “naval aviators in leather skull caps”- he did this well, focusing on the triumphs and tragedies often found within the War and Navy departments during the development of our country’s military aviation. This was also Ford’s tribute to Army-Navy aviation camaraderie- America’s early combat teams. Seen here are episodes of Army-Navy departmental budget rivalries; around-the-world “beat the Navy” Army Air Corps celebrations; CDR Wead at the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during 1942 - 1943; combat films compiled by CDR Ford, USNR (Chief, Field Photographic Branch, OSS- worked for William “Wild Bill” Donovan, Director of OSS); and, the story of how CDR Wead got production approval of new “jeep” aircraft carriers on converted cruiser hulls- with the approval of ADM King and President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1941. There is combat footage aboard carriers- a reenactment of CDR Wead aboard USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) as Chief of Staff/ Operations for RADM Charles A. “Baldy” Pownall, CTF-50, during the Gilbert and Marshall islands operations.

Interests in making this film concerning CDR Wead began with correspondence between Vice Admirals John Dale Price, Calvin Thornton Durgin, and John Ford. Ford received first priority from the Department of Defense (DoD) to film a story about CDR Wead, months ahead of an attempt by Warner Brothers Pictures Distributing Corporation. Priority permission to Ford was granted by Donald E. Baruch (Chief, Motion Picture Section, Pictorial Branch, DoD). The film was to be based upon historical material from DoD, tales from Price and Durgin, earlier correspondence received from CDR Wead, and a book by “Red” Futhven & Jerry Stagg titled “Staircase”. The public has seen this magnificent Ford tribute to CDR Wead since 1957. A newcomer to this film might ask- who was this naval aviator called Spig Wead?

CDR Frank Wilbur Wead, USN, acquired the nickname “Spig” during his Naval Academy days (1912 - 1916). He accumulated 9 years & 7 months total sea service prior to his accident. Together, Lieutenants Wead, Price and Durgin received their aviation wings 22 May 1920, NAS Pensacola, FL. Later, LT Wead led the U.S. Navy Schneider Cup Team to England and brought this famous cup to America aboard S.S. LEVIATHAN, October 1923. With LT Price they broke five seaplane records, 11 - 12 July 1924. Along with fleet exercises aboard USS LANGLEY with VT-2, there were staff duty assignments under Admirals Moffett and Joseph M. Reeves, and with 11th Naval District Commander. Wead wrote for leading magazines (The Saturday Evening Post and The American Magazine) and Hollywood during 1930s to 1940s. His final assignment was as commanding officer of VF-2. During WWII, he acquired combat duty aboard USS YORKTOWN, receiving the Legion of Merit (Combat). CDR Wead was relieved from active duty 21 July 1944, at Fleet Air, Alameda, California, where his last naval boss was RADM Pownall (Commander Air Force, Pacific Fleet).

The accident: Tragedy struck Wednesday morning, 14 April 1926, during heavy electrical storm over San Diego and Coronado. Combination of power outage and hurrying in the darkness, LT Wead accidentally tripped, falling down dark stairway, fracturing his neck. This occurred in a two-story home he and Minnie recently rented: 600 9th Avenue, Coronado, CA Today, one can still see this home corner of 9th and H avenues.

Not your typical John Wayne war picture it shows the amazing chemistry of Maureen O’Hara and John Wayne it does seem that these two could never go wrong. This movie is no exception. It starts as John Wayne is learning to fly the first planes in the navy in a hilarious barn busting scene. At times it has a very Gomer Pyle feel to it at other times it has a Last Days of Patton feel.

The Transfer is descent for its age doesn’t seem to have been given anything special, though that’s not surprised when you think of John Wayne this isn’t the first movie to come to mind, the audio isn’t in 5.1 but it’s not a movie that lends itself to needing it. As most of the movies of the 1950’s it has that parent trap look too it, which to me ads to the charm of the movie. Of course let’s not forget John Ford Directed it.

In conclusion for 10 bucks it’s a great DVD to own. For John Wayne fans its must to complete there collection this comes from someone who is partial to Wayne’s westerns but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The packaging it’s a typical plastic case which is great to me. Its single disc nothing fancy just like the duke plain simple and to the point.

In the third volume of Angel Tales, things get a lot more complicated than the previous harem comedy that has went on to this point. Goro’s life is threatened by 4 mysterious effeminate beast gods who accuse our innocent Goro of stealing their powers. As revenge they want Goro’s head on a platter. The Angels just might have to sacrifice their lives to save him. Meanwhile, on the domestic front, Ran becomes more and more jealous and depressed about Mika’s overly affectionate rabbit nature.

Angel Tales remains an innocent and sometimes overly syrupy pleasure even with the intrusion of a shonen jump type action sequence at the end of the last episode. The girls in the show are endearing and funny and never become annoying as is the case with some shows like this. The whole revenge of the Beast Gods is a little goofy to me, but hey, this is a show about animal pets being reincarnated as guardian angels, so you can’t let reality intrude all that much.

The dvd also has a series of shorts called Venomous Tails, which feature super-deformed versions of the characters in short skits, and what appear to be ads for a Playstation game based on the anime. It also has a little info about the Angel ranks on one of the menus and the usual artwork gallery.
