Houseboat was the first movie I ever saw in a drive-in. Imagine seeing Cary Grant and Sophia Loren dancing to a Sam Cooke like song on a mask the size of a football field. The wardrobe for the movie is fair. When did we terminate taking the time to dazzle with matching hats, gloves, etc.? Clear beauty aside, what really impressed me was the award winning script. The explanation Cary Grant gives as a parent about death, and the kids dialogue and behavior rang just. The kids behaved like any children would when one parent dies, and an absentee parent appears to seize them from the good world of their grandparents. The kids were terrific in their roles. Cary Grant and Sophia Loren were great considering she had impartial dumped him to marry her original husband. One wonders what would have happened if Cary and Sophia had really married. Would they have lived happily ever after like they did in Houseboat? Who knows. At least we can have that fantasy time and time again on DVD.

‘Houseboat’ is a throwback to the kind of sweet, contented comedies Cary Grant did in the unhurried ’40s-early ’50s, and it foreshadows the domestic comedies James Stewart and Henry Fonda would do in the sixties. Granted, there is more romance (and with Sophia Loren as the objection of affection, Cary has it all OVER Jimmy and Hank!) but ultimately, it scores as a terrific family movie, as Loren, playing an inept but adorable housekeeper/nanny, wins the affection of widower Grant’s kids, and awakens in him a more complete treasure than he was experiencing with his society girlfriend (played effectively by the glowing Martha Hyer) .

Living in a rundown houseboat to set on expenses, Grant and family lives had become a tiring, routine, until the arrival of Hurricane Loren, with her Italian philosophy, her singing, and her unmistakable femininity and sex appeal (which introduces oldest son Paul Peterson to the joys of puberty, and to daughter Mimi Gibson and younger son Charles Herbert a mother-figure they both needed) . Grant is at first oblivious to her charms, but she is hard to ignore for long! The inquire of then becomes, when will Cary ‘wake up’, and realize everything he needs is factual on the houseboat?

Filmed after Grant and Loren’s whirlwind affair during the filming of ‘The Pride and the Passion’, the film was a bittersweet experience for both stars, particularly shooting the wedding scene, as Grant mild desperately wanted to marry Loren, but she had already decided to remain with longtime admire Carlo Ponti. Viewers aware of the ‘behind-the-scenes’ epic will delight in the performances of the two leads even more!

After you observe ‘Houseboat’, find the flipside of this yarn in Grant’s later ‘Father Goose’, as a drunken reprobate with a boat who must deal with governess Leslie Caron and her charges! The two films effect a absorbing double-feature, and showcases Cary Grant’s unbelievable versatility!

Seen either arrangement, ‘Houseboat’ is a delight!

The fourth season of “House, M.D.” was one of its best seasons yet. This very engaging (and approved) drama series has already three strong seasons late it, and season four does not disappoint. I was kind of weary going into season four because of what happened at the kill of season three, when everyone’s current crabby TV doc lost his team. I wasn’t obvious if this exhibit would unruffled be as gracious as it was, but I’m elated I stuck it out for season four. Give the writers credit, because this time they decided to have some fun going into the season, and big fun it was. The demonstrate at times is very dramatic, and at other times it’s very laughable.

The season starts off in the first episode with Dr. House unruffled without a team and trying to diagnose a patient on his gain, while Drs. Cuddy and Wilson (House’s boss and reliable friend, respectively) try to persuade him to attach together a current team by hiring some current doctors. The humor in episode one is quiet very remarkable intact, especially in the scene where House tries to secure ideas from the hospital janitor (”You were bouncing ideas off a janitor”, Wilson tells him hilariously) . When House finally decides to give in, there are 40 candidates vying for 3 positions on House’s staff. And that’s where the proper fun of season four begins. The next several episodes turn into a “Survivor” type game where House eliminates the candidates one-by-one until he finally makes his final decision in the ninth episode. These episodes worked very well and it was a lot of fun to contemplate House play off these potential candidates. In the middle of all this, House’s three dilapidated team members (Drs. Foreman, Cameron, and Budge) all return to Princeton-Plainsboro, but now working in modern positions. The latter episodes deal with the three modern doctors trying to deal with House as well as the patients they’re diagnosing. And in an captivating subplot, Dr. Wilson finds a current esteem interest who objective happens to be one of the same doctors who was trying to collect onto House’s staff and lost out. The final episode ends with a heartbreaker as House and company try to effect the life of a person who was the victim of a bus smash, and House’s inability to salvage out what really happened since he was also a victim of that same bus wreck and has reach down with temporary amnesia which makes the other doctors’ jobs a whole lot harder.

Hugh Laurie once again dominates this display as he has from day one. Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Cuddy) and Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson) provide immense abet as usual. Omar Epps (Dr. Foreman) is aid and is given a dazzling suitable amount of mask time since his character is now overseeing and watching the novel team. Primitive real-life couple Jennifer Morrison (Dr. Cameron) and Jesse Spencer (Dr. Scramble) are also encourage, but weren’t given worthy to do this time around. This is due to the three recent cast members whose characters were the ones that House picked to fabricate up his modern team. Peter Jacobson (Dr. Taub), Kal Penn (Dr. Kutner), and Olivia Wilde (Thirteen) were the best ones for the job, and if I were a doctor and I had to chose some novel team members, I would have picked these same characters. However I would have picked an additional fourth member to be on the staff: and that would have been Amber. Anne Dudek was a major standout in season four as Amber, who has a personality that’s unprejudiced like House. This character ended up being the last to go when House made his final decision on who he wanted for his team, but she was assist (surprisingly) in the later episodes as Wilson’s modern girlfriend.

Because of the writers strike that shut down television production on all TV shows, the fourth season of “House” is shorter. Only 16 episodes this time around, but they’re some of the best episodes that this terrific present has to offer. I hope it gets multiple Emmy nominations this year because it deserves them, and maybe this time out it’ll regain some Emmy Awards. My fingers are crossed.

First let me inaugurate by saying House my my popular point to, I couldn’t contemplate any more highly of season 1 through 3 - intense, compelling, comical, gigantic camera angles, writing, unbiased everything about those seasons is perfect in my eyes. Even today watching those episodes for 5/6th time, I’m tranquil so impressed.

Season four took a fall, I can’t look myself watching the episodes over and over like I could the first three seasons. Jennifer Morrison and Jesse Spencer are no longer in the note (distinguished, anyway) and all the grand chemistry between House and his team is gone, replaced by three unusual dull one dimensional characters. The writing seems like it’s slacking, resorting to ridiculous lines that feel as if they’re only there for shock value.

If you’re unique to House, I recommend picking up the first three DVDs before considering this one. It is level-headed a titanic point to compared to what else is on TV, but it doesn’t stand out like it conventional to.

I once made the comment that most of the entertainment today is in very awful shape. The industries are trying to relive past glories, especially music and movies. Most of the money being made in the music industry is reissues, HDCD releases of notorious titles, delux reissues, legacy reissues, offical releases of bootlegs, greatest hits, and any and all repackaging of classic albums. And they all exercise well known, classic, ample name artists, because they know people will grasp it. Because the majority of novel CDs, and novel artists aren’t of any staunch quality, they have to rely on the stale stuff to get money. The same can be said of the movies. It’s all sequels, prequels, remakes, and remodels.

Accordingly, I was not thrilled when I heard a novel version of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” was coming out. When I learned it was a Tim Burton/Danny Elfman/Johnny Depp production, I was less skeptical. When I saw a trailer, I was alive to. When I heard Danny Elfman was writing/composing the music AND doing the vocals, I was aroused. The collaboration is tremendous, almost to the point of excusing all their pretensiousness and self-absorbtion… enough quibbling. On to the movie!

It holds many of Tim Burton’s staples; it is dim, stark, eerie, and filled with the regular unnamable props, but he has allowed joy into the equation. The movie is grand better for it. There is rich color, specifically in the factory, to match the rich imagery and droll comparisons of Willy Wonka. Depp is cast perfectly in this role, which is not really apparent unless you discover the movie. He is silly, quirky, confused, and innocent; grand different than the quick-witted, strong character played by Gene Wilder in the novel. The children who get the golden tickets and their parents do a colossal job too. Perhaps my well-liked allotment is the wild card, Danny Elfman. If you don’t know WHO Elfman is, you’re determined to have heard his music whether in any number of cult classic 80’s films (Pee Wee’s Gargantuan Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman 1 & 2), his TV themes (The Simpsons), his musical-esque movies featuring his vocals (Nightmare Before Christmas– an absolute classic soundtrack), or his 15-plus years of work as the vocalist/writer/guitarist for 80’s heavyweight Oingo Boingo. “Charlie” is the 11th time Tim Burton has feeble Elfman as his composer, and this is arguably their greatest work together (though I buy “Nightmare Before Christmas”) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! Click Here

The movie itself is quite engrossing, engrossing into parts of the Willy Wonka anecdote the orignal movie didn’t, relying more on the Ron Dahl book. Note: even the lyrics to the four Oompa-Loompa songs are the lyrics from the new. We learn that Willy became a chocolateer to spite his father and is forever terrified by this falling out. An eventual redemtion of their relationship serves as a very sure pro-family element. Best of all, it’s neat. Nothing negative, offensive, or disturbing is presented, meaning a green light for families and kids; a Stout plus. The quandary of lacking special features is corrected here, but you can set a few dollars if you don’t mind a slimmer package. A stout, expansive, fun movie.

Overall: 9 out of 10.

First off, yes, I am a fan of Tim Burton. I even maintain every one of his movies on DVD (though one or two of them I could live without) . But that’s not the point. The fact is, I respect his vision as an artist; and his ability to gain such surrealistic worlds that are both exclusive and amazing are unbiased enough why I idolize him.

Okay, now, some of you may wonder, if this is a tell remake of the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that starred Gene Wilder. Actually, no, even though it’s the same sage plan. The only disagreement is that this film pays more homage to the book (Distinguished more homage) and is (of course) Astonishing to eye at. The storyline now, is simple enough (because I’m under the impression that a lot of people have seen the unique film) : Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) is a boy from an impoverished family living under the shadow of a giant chocolate factory, who eventually wins a candy bar contest and is given a tour, along with four other children, of the astounding factory rush by the eccentric Willy Wonka and his staff of Oompa-Loompas.

Performance wise, this movie belongs to Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, who are able to recreate their chemistry from Finding Neverland. However, quote: “Depp’s Wonka is far less cuddly than that of Gene Wilder, playing it more like a demented Mr. Rogers with more than a bit of a sadistic walk. The contrivance that he watches the kids meet their fates with giddy glee is quite disturbing, but it’s hard not to indulge in this quirky hermit’s complete lack of social skills.”-Edward Douglas, [...] (sorry, but the guy explianed it perfectly) Also, I’d like to sure this up out of my system before it does any more afflict, but it seems A LOT of ….people are comparing Depp’s Wonka w/ a positive pop star so great that it really unbiased sickens me. This assessment can be contradicted however. First reason (and this came from no other than Depp himself) : In an interview, Johnny said he had NO Plan whatsoever to cross his character off of Micheal Jackson. Second reason: Willy Wonka is a recluse, so he’s supposed to be unfamiliar, curious, crazy, whatever. I mean, the guy shunned himself from society for 15 years so he’s going to be pale, out of style/trend, and a bit gradual. Also, throughout the movie, we’re shown flashbacks of Wonka’s past that are ancient to define his weirdness. There, raze of chronicle. Freddie Highmore’s Charlie is more dismal than the novel one, so noteworthy that you’ll want to hug him b/c he’s so optimistic depsite living such an impoverished lifestyle. Another performance nod goes to Deep Roy, who plays all the Oompa-Loompas w/ such panache. Everyone else is satisfactory in their performances.

Now, aesthetically, this film is amazing; in fact, this is Burton’s most visually striking film to date. He yet again creates such surreal and imaginative landscapes that it’s unprejudiced dependable watch candy to survey at; the factory rooms being the prime example. Some of the wacky machinery outmoded to earn candy is unbiased as impressive and actually looks like it could work. Yet, as w/ the unusual film, this film creates an atmosphere that could unnerve sensitive folks. The boat stir down the chocolate tunnel is not the acid slip that was the novel, but rather like an intense roller coaster plug. Also, for those who have seen the unique, the four kids who topple to their weaknesses (loosely speaking: gluttony, pride, avarice(that’s greed) and sloth) and punished for not heeding warnings are a bit more uncertain (thanks to the evolution of filmmaking) and glance fatal, but are not.

Also, another treat in this film is to hear composer Danny Elfman (who has unexcited elegant powerful all of Tim Burton’s films to date keep for Ed Wood, which was scored by Howard Shore) order again. He sings all the Oompa-Loompa songs provided by the lyrics written in the book with such style that you can’t attend but tap your feet. For the report, he also sung in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Well, I acquire I covered over everything. Overall, loyal faithful adaptation that surpasses the novel in practically every method (sorry, but…my idea) . Also, the ending is different, both from the book and the novel film; but level-headed pleasurable. This is also Burton’s best film next to Ed Wood and redeems him from his Planet of the Apes remake (what was he thinking w/ that? ) . Anyways, colossal film: honest as wacky and zigzag as you might ask but nonetheless fabulous to inspect at and as magical as the fresh.

Even if you’re not a fan of John Waters, which I am, this movie is worth seeing at least twice. Despite Melanie Griffith’s somewhat tepid acting, its absolute absurdity at times will have you laughing long and hard. And not only is it a spectacular comedy but, like all John Waters films, it’s got something to say. Cecil and the Sprocket-Holes’ absolute disgust of mainstream film, while taken to ridiculous measures, makes one think: Why ARE there so many movies based on video games? Why do we roar on re-making fabulous foreign films fair so we don’t have to read subtitles? WHY ARE THERE TWO BRADY BUNCH MOVIES?????? Being something of a film coneisseur myself, as well as an aspiring film-maker, this movie held a lot more than a few laughs for me. I often found myself screaming obscenities along with Cecil’s misfit gang. Terminate the mass distribution of mediocre films. Yeah! Bring help the dream. Yeah!!! Family (as in “family films”) is fair another word for censorship! YEAH!!!!! Power to the people who punish unpleasant cinema! YEAH!!!!! Ok, so perhaps I need to find a life. Be that as it may, Cecil B. Demented is tranquil a ample flick. If nothing else, observe it for the laughs…and the Christmas Trees. You’ll glimpse.

We all know John Waters, and if you don’t maybe you should ask yourself why this selection should interest you in the first station. He has created B rate films that were determined to shock the audience, and force them into convulsions. That was the leisurely seventies, and yes everyone must “grow up” (and I employ this term loosely.) This movie, unlike most of his work does have a political disclose to accompany the fresh behaviors displayed by the fresh characters. It is a message of insulting the conformist society that pays to stare movies like “Runaway Bride,” at the theatre. His characters are, as always, well developed and completely motivated in the genre created by Waters. If you absorb that society should revolt against the spoonfed cinema forced down the public’s throat, like we are mentally challenged infants, this film is definitely for you. It is a movie that is non-passive in its message that it is better to have a strong and passionate viewpoint than no viewpoint at all. DEMENTED FOREVER!

I missed this film in its theatrical release (apparently it received tiny distribution), but since it requires at least two viewings, it’s well-suited for DVD. It’s difficult to picture the epic or even represent it by genre, which shows how fresh the film is. Simply keep, it’s about time recede, but it’s about a lot more than that, too.

The acting is consistently outstanding, with a list of celebrated names in the cast, along with less familiar ones. Jake Gyllenhaal gives an incredible performance that is so convincing, you forget that he is acting; he IS Donnie Darko. While the legend is mainly told through his eyes, the other characters are surprisingly sympathetic as well. This is not an easy feat for a script to execute, especially when the viewer must focus so remarkable attention on every event. It would have been easy to originate a one-dimensional hero and a bunch of villains, but writer/director Richard Kelly doesn’t win the easy intention out.

Instead, we rep a highly smart and enchanting film that engages us as great as it baffles us, that injects enough humor to withhold us from stress-overload, and most importantly, makes us want to witness it again and again, even after we know what’s going on. In this sense, “Donnie Darko” succeeds where other films have fallen short: for example, I enjoyed the complexities of “Memento”, but I was not able to identify or even care very distinguished about any of the characters. The same was lawful of “The Usual Suspects”. Both are superior films, but I viewed both from a distance, more analytically than emotionally.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Donnie Darko! Click Here

I did not notion “Donnie Darko” from a distance. I was drawn into the world that it creates, and enjoyed it enough to return more than once. A vivid first film from Richard Kelly, who has region a very high standard for himself.

The DVD does tubby justice to this graceful movie. The video and audio are marvelous, and the extra features are quite thorough. I particularly enjoyed the commentary by Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal, which I listened to the second time I watched the film. They do a vast job of helping the viewer to connect the dots. They also include fair enough of the usual “tedious the scenes” banter to support the commentary from becoming too academic.

This DVD would definitely be included in any “desert island” list that I would ever compile. Strongly recommended!

Any create of media that makes you judge has succeeded in what it dwelling out to do.Donnie Darko is a film that succeeds on every conceivable level. The script is novel and entirely unpredictable. There isn’t a single bit of action or dialogue, not one frame that can be anticipated. The characters, too, are refreshingly well-conceived and highly unusual. And it’s a treat to scrutinize actors we know well (Drew Barrymore, who also produced, and Noah Wyle) stretch well beyond our usual expectations. There is substantial humor in this film as well as huge sorrow. And, ultimately, it’s impossible to say if the entire scenario takes situation within the dreams of a shimmering but possibly schizophrenic young man or if, as he so desperately wishes, he has, through physics, managed to reverse time.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Donnie Darko! Click Here

Jake Gyllenhaal gives a attractive performance as Donnie. Even his body language–incurving shoulders, questioning eyes, dangerous smiles–reveal a tremendous, searching intelligence. Mary McDonnell gives yet another in a roster of thoughtful portrayals–this time as the despairing mother of radiant and apprehensive Donnie, simultaneously loving and hating him for being emotionally beyond her near. And Jena Mallone is objective unbelievable, one of the truest, most authentic young actors around today.

This is filmmaking at its best–an adventure for the mind–not to be missed.

It’s gigantic to finally have this BALLO on DVD! This has always been one of Verdi’s best works and it is handled here with a terrific cast and conductor. I occupy this recording to the medicore BALLO from 1980, also with Pavarotti, but Ricciarelli and Quilico are nowhere approach as effective as Millo and Nucci. NOt to mention, this production, with a historically acruate setting of Sweden, is grand more glorious on the discover than the barren attempt to recreate colonial Boston of the older production.

BALLO falls flat without a strong tenor, and here we have Luciano Pavarotti, in his mid-fifties, and unruffled producing one of the best tenor sounds out there. THough his yelp is clearly darker and heavier than what it was in 1980, he unruffled handles all the top-notes with ease. On top of all that, this is the role that he seems most comfortable with- and it shows! He actually attempts to act at times and his death scene is surprisingly very touching and effective.

Aprille Millo is heard here in the midst of her short-lived zenith. She sings quite possibly the greatest “Ecco L’Orido Campo” I have heard at the initiate of the second act.

Leo Nucci doesn’t have the most beautiful remark, but he manages to do an top-notch job in this and clearly edges out the competition (Quilico & Cappucilli) on the competing versions.

Strong attend comes from mezzo-soprano Florence Quivar and soprano Harolyn Blackwell as Ulrica and Oscar, respectively.

James Levine keeps it all together very well and, once again, proves himself a Verdi specialist.

After hearing to this extraordinary performance, I couldn’t avoid and started to compare it (mentally) to the Met’s DVD of this same opera taped in 1980. Both have their strong and conventional points:

1- The production: Both Moshinsky (1980) and Faggioni (1991) offer the viewer rather veteran productions that, however, work very well, being inobtrusive to the action (something principal to me) .

2- The conducting: Personally, I catch Giuseppe Patane’s (1980) to James Levine’s (1991) . Sometimes Levine doesn’t underline clear moments where this would be most welcome and can also be a bit vulgar, but these are minor quibbles. Both he and Patane were on the helm of one of best orchestras in the world, so nothing could go tainted.

3- The singers: PAVAROTTI’s shriek is clearly heavier and darker in 1991 rather than in 1980, but his is a performance to esteem (in both productions) . He is to me, the one who best knows how to make this character. Honest look, in both productions) the plot he acts when he learns from Ulrica that he will be murdered. He almost has Gustavo (Ricardo) in his blood. APRILE MILLO is a very kindly singer, with a nice, resounding sigh and with very valid acting abillities (unprejudiced peer her “Morrò, ma prima in grazia”) . Her Amelia is a very engaging portrayal. I objective would like her to teach a limited more pianissimo in some moments, which I know she can but, some how, doens’t manage to do. KATIA RICCIARELLI in 1980, has a more sweet, less great scream, and she, like Millo, plays Amelia with broad sensivity and care for the music. Both Amelia’s are very agreeable, among the best one can advance across with. In my contain notion, both Renato’s (almost) grasp the note. QUILICO (1980) and NUCCI (1991), though possesing different timbres manage to exclaim, at first, the deep faithfulness of Renato for his King and then, the humiliation and the rage the character feels. QUILICO is the most ‘regular’ (his first aria is wonderfully sang), NUCCI has a somewhat shaky begin, but both near to enormous heights as the opera progresses. both do entire justice to Renato’s music. Ulrica has always been a difficult character to bring off, because it is only exhibit in one act and because it needs a very crude female insist. BIANCA BERINI (1980) and FLORENCE QUIVAR (1991) lack this last, specially the first. Beyond that, BERINI’S teach is not as burly as QUIVAR’s. Despite this, they both have their bear against the rest of the singers, though QUIVAR seems to me more effective. The only singers who really bring off Ulrica are, in my idea, LUDWIG (with Solti) and COSSOTTO (with Muti) . The Oscar of HEROLYN BLACKWELL (1991) is very well sung and acted, but I bewitch JUDITH BLEGEN’s (1980) more refined portrayal (specially in vocal terms) . Sam and Tom (Horn and Ribbing) are well cast in both productions. WILLIAM WILDERMAN and JULIAN ROBBINS (1980), TERRY COOK and JEFFREY WELLS (1991), have all favorable voices and design a nice impression.

In blueprint of conclusion, I consider both performances are honorable with any venerable link. It all depends on the singers one may catch.

It’s about time they finally released this agreeable film version of the Robin Hood narrative on DVD. Many Disney fans born after 1960 aren’t aware that Disney wasn’t all about cartoons; in the early 1950s his studio released a number of live-action adventure films, which were nowhere come as financially successful as his spirited movies. But a few of them were as superb as many of his cartoon features, and none was better than “The Record of Robin Hood”, which appeared in the summer of 1952.

Set in 12th century England at the originate of Richard the Lionheart’s crusade to the Holy Land, we search for England as it was then, rural, mainly bad, solidly Catholic, devoted to the Holy Mother Church, and ruled over by a benevolent king about to dwelling off to holy war while he leaves his bad, scheming younger brother, Prince John, late to rule in his stead. When the film opens, their mother, Queen Elinor of Aquitaine, is giving her blessing to the enterprise while reminding all within earshot that she needs no looking after (”The woman who bore two sons like you”, she informs her oldest son the king, “can recall care of herself”) . And here is Robin, 18 years dilapidated, wishing he could effect along after the king, but without a care in the world except winning the upcoming archery tournament and chasing Maid Marian. But this idyll is about to advance crashing down; after winning the tournament and rudely rejecting to befriend under the ghastly Sheriff of Nottingham, Robin’s father is murdered by the sheriff’s right-hand man, and is killed by Robin in turn. It’s off to Sherwood Forest for life on the hurry as an outlaw, while Robin gathers around him other outcasts who have been impoverished by the sheriff’s rapacious deputies. There’s fun galore as we spy Robin and his merrie men robbing the rich to succor the abominable, rescuing the downtrodden from the sheriff’s villainy, kidnapping the sheriff himself and lightening his purse, and helping to pay King Richard’s ransom after he is captured in the Crusades by robbing the loot King John and the Sheriff have stolen from the abominable.

Ken Annakin keeps the film solidly on target in time and dwelling. The movie’s bag is exceptional; from Allan A’Dale broadcasting the news as a wandering minstrel, to the Gregorian chant sung by the knights as they location off on Richard’s crusade, we are transported 800 years assist in time. And Annakin reminds us, in a telling scene where Allan A’Dale is snubbed by some villagers, that not everyone in merrie olde England conception Robin and his men were saviors; to most of the upper class, and many of the microscopic but growing middle class, they were a gang of thieves and worse.

A large cast helps hold the film rolling. Richard Todd was never better than he was as Robin; fearless, wonderful, not to mention beefy of himself; merciless to the enemies of the underclass, he’s a winning hero. Joan Rice is sweet and sassy as Maid Marian; no simpering damsel is this young lady, she gives as valid as she gets. And the minor cast is terrific: James Robertson Justice is unprejudiced factual as Minute John; Elton Hayes is expedient as Allan A’Dale; Anthony Forwood is sly and cynical as Will Scarlett, and James Hayter almost walks off with the film with his hilarious performance as Friar Tuck. The movie works both as an action/adventure film and a piquant romp through medieval England. It’s one of Disney’s best.

Judy Lind

I fill that this Disney version of the legend of Robin Hood is as expedient as the Errol Flynn movie and far ample to the Kevin Costner movie.

The cast is uniformly excellent: Richard Todd is very safe as Robin Hood and Joan Rice is a sweet and very believable Maid Marian; Peter Finch is easily the best Sheriff of Nottingham and James Robertson Justice is the best Shrimp John of all the Robin Hood movies; and Elton Hayes singing as Allan-a-Dale throughout the movie is unbelievable.

The cinematography by Guy Green is fine. All in all, a big version of the Robin Hood tale.

PBS viewers will peek this offering. Ferguson is charming and persuasive. He makes the narrative something that even my twelve-year ancient can understand, without “talking down”. He covers the bulky range of financial dealings around the globe, from Wall Street to microfinance. His case contemplate of Argentina makes a difficult memoir relatively simple yet not simplistic. He positively critiques Hernando de Soto’s come ot providing title to land to the terrible as a means of securing collateral-based loans and shows where exiguous, uncollaterized loans can work even more effectively.

Great as a serious academic yet never dreary treatment of “high” and “extreme” finance. Should be required for most college majors.

The many facets of this documentary weave together a coherent and considerable sense of famous information affecting the point to and the future. Whether or not you are deeply alive to with studying economic theory, public policy, history, or the future, many key features of these things permeate your life, and this DVD can entertainingly provide a mixture of insights, illustrations, and warnings to mediate. Facts play a considerable larger role than speculation in this documentary, though the speculations seem plausible and add to the value of the overall finish. Scholars may score it productive to ask themselves how remarkable they agree or disagree with the speculations and why… then in future decades revisit the video to compare these details with how things actually unfolded. This DVD’s exhaust of intelligent images that metaphorically picture to narration is often profoundly appealing, too.

I saw this film when it opened on July 24, 2009. Mixed reviews from fans and critics were the usual flair upon its release, but something struck me about this movie. The film went on to immoral $37 million at the box-office despite the thrashing it took from critics, but everyone couldn’t wait on but inspect the Oscar-nomination advantageous performance of its 12-year-old star Isabelle Fuhrman. I impartial viewed the film on DVD for the first time since its theaterical race and I’m aloof seeing unprejudiced how riveting and interesting this movie really is.

“Orphan” is NOT a alarm film. It’s more along the lines of a SUSPENSE THRILLER. When I mediate of awe films, I believe of sex-crazed teenagers being sliced up one-by-one by a machete-wielding maniac (Jason Voorhies, Freddy Krueger, Micheal Myers, etc.) . The only sincere weapons wielded here is honest a hammer, a knife, and a .38-caliber pistol. You deem scary when it comes to awe films and “Orphan” isn’t scary. Has some horrible moments, yes, but scary? Wishful thinking!

Set in the winter-bound parts of Conneticut & Canada, the fable centers on the Coleman family: Kate (Vera Farmiga), a Yale University music teacher recovering from alcoholism and bouts of depression after having a stillborn from her third pregnancy; John (Peter Sarsgaard), an architech whose nice guy persona overshadows his increasing issues with Kate that led to past affairs; Max (Aryana Engineer), their deaf 5-year-old daughter who communicates through tag language and their oldest son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett), who feels bitterly neglected & increasingly isolated from his parents. As a plot of coping with the loss of their would-be 2nd daughter, Jessica, and to amend their existence as a family, Kate & John originate a fateful decision to adopt a young girl at the local orphanage.

It is here where they meet Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a sweet-looking 9-year-old Russian girl harboring some deep-seeded issues of her acquire despite her angelic smile and sympathetic mannerisms. Upon arriving home with modern stepdaughter in tow, a series of events unravel to build everyone ask the background and sincerity of this exiguous girl. Daniel dislikes her immediately, Max forms an unhealthy bond with her fresh stepsister, Kate begins to see out further information about Esther’s background, & John fair plays Devil’s Advocate with all that occurs tantalizing Esther. What’s spoiled with Esther? Is it fair that slow the smile of this petite angel beats the heart of a psycho killer?

The respond, and the enormous secret about who she really is, lies within the confines of this 123-minute thriller. I agree with everyone here that it moves at a near-torturous snail’s hotfoot, that being the film’s major fatal flaw. But the epic itself is so entralling and exciting, you can’t befriend but to excuse that misfire. Fuhrman’s performance alone keeps you fervent in the twists and turns entrenched here. Only a young, superbly talented actress like Fuhrman was able to pull off a psychological undertaking of switching from sympathetic manipulator to frightened sadist and it’s why I feel she should obtain an Oscar nod. But due to the overall despise of the film itself from most critics and for her young age, she probably won’t come by anywhere arrive sniffing distance of the balloting.

Nonetheless, I was so inspired by this film and became such a fan that I created my acquire 20-song, hard-rock CD Mix (liner notes & all) of songs inspired by the movie (my maintain psuedo-soundtrack, if you will, but John Ottman’s secure was wintry) . Seemingly destined to go down as a cult current, if not a classic, “Orphan” was a solid & luscious thrill creep that’s essentially “The Hand That Rocks The Cradle”, “The Honorable Son”, “The Crush”, and a more mean-spirited version of “Predicament Child” all rolled into one. That’s why this movie isn’t a dread despite being classified as one. This film has a depth, substance, and intuitiveness to it that Jason, Micheal, & Freddy couldn’t touch with a bloddy axe. Unbiased rob sweet, small Esther home and let her possess you, thrill you, kiss you, …. demolish you!!! Can someone out there please say “CULT CLASSIC”? - DEM -

Many people fetch that describing the movie to give a movie review is the plan to go. Usually, I refrain, but on this occasion, I will include the position. A husband and wife, already with two children of their have (one who is deaf) lose their third child during labor. They resort to adopting an orphan–a 9-year-old, seemingly knowing and kind-hearted, microscopic Russian girl. Great to their awe, what seems to be the perfect adoption turns into anything but. The movie moves at a humdrum but definite hurry for the first 45 minutes or so, but then the rockin’ starts to rollin’ as the tale spirals into a cacophony of strangeness accompanied with mountains of vindictive mayhem. Many reviews I have read had a dilemma with the twist; I understanding it to be VERY Wintry, and something that could become reality in the realm of possibility, which makes it all the more founded, thus being all the more horrific. Impartial before the twist; however, something happened that made me contemplate, “Okay, here we go…factual benefit into the laughable Hollywood scare film crap that has been bombarding us throughout the beginning of the unique century.” But when the twist hits and everything finally makes sense, I was thankfully pulled from that content of notion and taken assist into a bizarre and improbable myth. Dismal Castle Entertainment has done a LOT of movies that I simply treasure (Gothika, Ghost Ship, and Thirteen Ghosts.) This one will have to go into that group of five-star movies. Don’t miss it!

FIVE STARS ***** for everything being done the design it should be done!

Okay so it doesn’t follow the book entirely but I really enjoyed it, almost as powerful as I have enjoyed the books over the years.

It has been shown on English TV already so this will possess spoilers.

The movies follows a recently bereaved woman Mma Ramotste, well acted by the puny known actress Jill Scott as she sets up the only Private Detective Agency in Botswana and her attempts to collect it off the ground with the wait on of her original secretary Mma Makutsi played by the versatile Anika Noni Rose, and Mr JLB Matekoni, the owner and elegant mechanic of the astonishing Snappy Motors, played by Lucian Msamati. Follow Mma Ramotste as she takes on cases, meets many current people who need her aid from a woman who thinks the man who has turned up at her door is not her father, to another lady who has a boyfriend who may or may not be faithful to her.

Filmed in Botswana and South Africa, the film tries to be as faithful as it can be to McCall Smith’s books and I loved every second of it!

This is the pilot movie for a modern series, so lets hope it is successful!

I saw the premier of the Mc Call Smith “the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency on HBO - it was a amazing production and the cast fit my imagined characters perfectly (I have read all eight books in this series) . I can only recommend this to readers and viewers as a broad experience.
