While I’ve watched Unconstitutional - The War On Our Civil Liberties a lot, it seems to never get old. I guess it’s one of my favorites. With a reported budget of $172 million, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines starts in high gear and never slows down. The apocalyptic “Judgment Day” of T2 was never prevented, only postponed: John Connor (Nick Stahl, replacing T2’s Edward Furlong), now 22 and disconnected from society, is being pursud yet again, this time by the advanced T-X, a sleek “Terminatrix” (coldly expressionless Kristanna Loken) programmed to stop Connor from becoming the savior of humankind. Originally programmed as an assassin, a disadvantaged T-101 cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger, bidding fond farewell to his signature role) arrives from the future to join Connor and his old acquaintance Kate (Claire Danes) in thwarting the T-X’s relentless pursuit. The plot presents a logical fulfillment of T2 prophesy, disposing of Connor’s mother (Linda Hamilton is sorely missed) while computer-driven machines assume control, launching a nuclear nightmare that Connor must survive. With Breakdown and U-571 serving as worthy rehearsals for this cautionary epic of mass destruction, director Jonathan Mostow wisely avoids any stylistic connection to James Cameron’s Terminator classics; instead he’s crafted a fun, exciting popcorn thriller, humorous and yet still effectively nihilistic, and comparable to Jurassic Park III in returning the Terminator franchise to its potent B-movie roots. –Jeff Shannon

For anyone who still holds up Ed Wood as the worst director who ever lived, consider A Night to Dismember as a nomination for Doris Wishman. This largely incomprehensible horror film (her first feature in 20 years) features porn star Samantha Fox in a rare “legitimate” role as a suspected psycho killer sprung from an insane asylum. Is it mere coincidence that the body count begins anew? The QUn of Exploitation adds mutilations, dismembered bodies, and buckets of gore to her trademark nudie style, but her techniqu is just as primitive as ever. The special effects are crude (to say the least), the photography dark and dreary, and the soundtrack awkwardly dubbed in (why waste time recording sound on set?) while a grating narrator hopelessly tries to make sense of the mess. This one is for Wishman fans and bad-cinema junkies only.

The film may be dreadful, but the brash and brassy Wishman is a real character and contributes a hugely entertaining commentary track. She bickers with her longtime cinematographer C. (”Chuck”) Davis Smith and explains how the film was cobbled together from remnants after much of her original footage was destroyed by the lab. That explains the cinematic clumsiness and narrative incoherence, and illuminates the poor shape of the film master. This is, quite frankly, a terrible-looking and -sounding disc, but it’s hard to believe it ever looked much better on the screen. The DVD also features a six-minute promotional short taken from a bleary video master. –Sean Axmaker

If you haven’t heard of Imperio de la Fortuna, here’s a quick plot:
Based on a classic story by Latin American literature master Juan Rulfo, this drama tells the story of Dionisio Pinzon, a poor peasant living in a small Mexican town with his mother. He becomes interested in cock fighting when he is given an injured gamecock; together they set off to find their fortune in cockfights and gambling. This profound film by Arturo Ripstein is in part an homage to Bunel’s work in Mexico.

If you like Ernesto Gomez Cruz, then you’ll LOVE Imperio de la Fortuna! Watch it for the first time, or just watch it again! I really enjoyed this movie.
