“Medal of Honor” …is that rare thing — a film shot through with the most emotional of themes that succeeds in rendering portraits of unimaginable heroism with discipline and dignity. …Along with story after story of heroic enterprise, accompanied by relevant, splendid footage, this film …provides a hard-minded account of the medal’s history. We watched this movie on TV one night when we couldn’t find any thing else we wanted to watch so when someone changed the channels and came across Night of the Twisters I was at first reluctant to watch it because we had rented the theatrically released Twister when it came out on video and I just didn’t like that movie at all and thought all the hype was not worth it and it just wasn’t what it was all cracked up to be. I enjoyed Night of The Twisters though and thought it was way better, the special effects are just as good if even better and I have to agree that the story and dialogue are better in Night of the Twisters. I got this movie on video a few years and it is a used copy and a little worn out so I definitely have to agree that the movie would be best on DVD and I would very gladly replace my video with a sturdier DVD that will last longer and won’t wear out as easily as a tape. Plus I just really recommend this movie, I like disater movies and Night of the Twisters is one of my favorites along with The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno and Earthquake.

Night of the Twisters is one of the best films I’ve ever seen. The performance from the lovely Devon Sawa (Dan Hatch) is fantastic. My dad’s not really one to actually sit and watch any film all the way through, but he did with this film which made my day! It’s basically about a boy called Dan and his best friend Arthur (Amos Crawley) who get trapped inside Dan’s house during a horrific tornado storm, and have to get Dan’s baby brother and themselves to the safety of the basement. After the twister’s over, Dan and Arthur set out on a journey to find Arthur’s sisters and Dan’s step-father, Jack (John Schneider), grandma and mother, and try and all get to the safety of a medical centre in the town before they get hit by another twister. If you can’t buy this film, then I recommend you rent it a few times, cos this is one film with indredible effects which are worth seeing!

One of the great Christmas movies. The Herdman’s really can teach you the true meaning of Christmas. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!!

I was more than a little surprised when I discovered that there had been a film version of Barbara Robinson’s beloved short story AND that (even more surprising to me) the only attempt to bring it to film was made 20 years ago…this year.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best Christmas Pageant Ever DVD! Click Here

Since I have always loved the book (and make a point to read the story every Christmas), I put my $20 down on the cyber counter…without thinking…and purchased a copy. The DVD arrived in the mail today and as soon as I possibly could, I sat down to watch it…

Hmmmm…what can I say? Yes…I know…the movie was made in the 80’s, and for television no less. BUT even with that in mind, I was still a little dissappointed with the production.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Best Christmas Pageant Ever DVD! Click Here

I agree with other reviewers that the acting was for the most part, quite excellent…but first rate performances were not enough to offset the second rate quality of the film itself, which had a faded, almost murky feel so common with television shows in the 80s (as I watched, I swear to you, images of “Little House on The Prairie” kept flashing before my eyes)…

Would I have purchased the DVD if I had known what I was going to see? The answer is: NO…I wouldn’t have. Perhaps it’s true that some stories just can’t be translated to the screen. Or maybe, more true to the point, it’s just that most people do not love this story as much as I do, and therefore are not interested in putting some real money behind it (and give it the production it deserves)…

We have a ka-zillion film and stage versions of “A Christmas Carol” out there…will someone please make JUST ONE more adaptation of this not-as-popular holiday classic…a film version that I can truly give five stars for…

FIVE STARS because to date, it’s the only adaptation on Barbara Robinson’s book, MINUS TWO STARS because the film production was so unworthy of such a great story…

Well worth the wait, and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Like several other reviewers, I am looking forward to this release. I only recently finished Volume 1 of “Superman” and cannot wait for more episodes.

Just to clarify something a previous reviewer mentioned…the three-part episode “World’s Finest” (cross-over with Batman) originally aired as three episodes of “Superman: The Animated Series” and IS part of this show. The single-disc “Batman/Superman Movie” was released before WB started putting out season sets of “Batman” and “Superman.”

I’m looking forward to the other Batman cross-over episodes, as well as appearances from Aquaman and Green Lantern in future volumes, as well as the great episodes coming in Volume 2.

Healthily into its third season, it’s only now that BEN 10’s freshman year is finally coming out in dvd in all its thirteen episode glory. Debuting in December 27, 2005 on the Cartoon Network, BEN 10 was an immediate hit with the fans as the show, boasting a very cool concept, proved to be fun and eminently watchable. Plus, that theme song rocks.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ben 10 - The Complete Season 1! Click Here

The premise: Ordinary 10 year old Ben Tennyson comes upon a mysterious alien artifact (resembling a wristwatch) which grants him temporary access to the forms of ten alien species, each of whom is inherently imbued with its own superhuman ability. In the constant company of his wise and benign grandfather Max (who hints of an enigmatic past, proving that being a “plumber” is more exciting than one would think) and his clever, sassy cousin Gwen (who he initially dislikes), Ben, early on, learns his lessons as he heroically attempts to abide by the famous Spidey quote: “With great power comes great responsibility.” But his attempts to live up to that credo are at constant odds with his more carefree and mischievous pre-adolescent tendencies. Accordingly, he strives to use his new-found super powers to nab villains, all the while keeping at bay the maurauding alien, octopus-faced Vilgax, who will stop at nothing to own the Omnitrix. But, as civic minded as he has become, that doesn’t mean that young Ben can’t have any fun…

The hook, of course, is that this young, normal kid all of a sudden gains and gets to play with the powers of ten formidable alien beings. Part of the fun is in witnessing Ben discover all the diverse forms (some of which are strange and kinda gross, and one, Ghostfreak, even really unnerving) he comes to inhabit and his varying reactions to ‘em. These ten beings are rendered as visually striking and colorful, my two personal favorites being Heatblast and Upgrade. And, oh, yeah, for those who were wondering, these ten aliens whose shapes and abilities Ben can borrow, in no particular order, are: Upgrade (a biomechanical being who can integrate itself into any machine and instantly improve upon or “upgrade” it), Four Arms (a bruising, 12-foot-tall, four-armed alien with awesome strength), Heatblast (an incendiary individual whose race dwells on a sun), Diamondhead (the near invulnerable, crystalline being), XLR8 (capable of immense super speed), Ripjaws (the aquatic alien), Grey Matter (the miniscule alien, standing at 5″ tall), Ghostfreak (creepy and spectre-like), Stinkfly (a winged insectoid alien), and Wildmutt (a quilled, bestial creature).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ben 10 - The Complete Season 1! Click Here

And, now, for the self-righteous, holier-than-thou part of the review: this show is perfectly catered for our impressionable young ‘uns. With the expected, patented family values, as well as the mainstay credo of trying to do the right thing, being wholesomely espoused throughout the episodes (and in a non-sanctimonious way), kids should find themselves entertained as they are simultaneously taught the classic, goody-two-shoes virtues. The interactions among Ben, Grandpa Max, and Gwen are nicely portrayed as his supportive gramps and his more mature cousin strive to keep the impulsive Ben on the proper path (because Ben does lose it and act out every now and then).

Its cartoony animation is well suited to BEN 10, meshing with the show’s sensibilities. This series is meant to be light, innocent, and fun-filled, in spite of all the heavy sci-fi action, and these qualities are perfectly conveyed by the clean lines and caricatured look. Young kids certainly wouldn’t mind, and Ben’s otherworldly personas are depicted in a nifty and energetic enough manner. The look and style of BEN 10, actually, leans towards the anime style and recalls TEEN TITANS to mind. I kinda like it.

Now, the minuses. Other than the very alluring hook of being ten different superheroes, there’s really nothing new about this series. One improvement I can think of is that this show would be better served with more cohesion and more episodic continuity. Multi-part episodes would be very welcome. As it is right now, the formulaic plot has the Tennyson family travelling to some destination, only to encounter the supervillain flavor-of-the-week (although several of these baddies are sicced on by the series’s main villain, Vilgax). Don’t get me wrong, there is some character development and these are pretty cool stand alone episodes, but BEN 10 seemingly lacks that certain focus; and the show’s story arc and plot progression are developing too slowly for my taste. But, hey, that doesn’t mean I’m gonna stop watching this series. When you get to the nitty-gritty, BEN 10 is just too much fun to miss out. Not to mention, Seasons 2 and 3 do offer up several great episodes (”Gwen 10″ and “Ben 10,000,” to name but two).

By the way, from what I’ve read on Wikipedia, the Special Features will include several episode commentaries, interviews with the showmakers, a creator drawing lesson, and a collectible poster.

***********************************************************************

Here we go with the episodes:

“And Then There Were Ten” (episode one) - On a summer cross-country trip via motorhome with his Grandpa Max and his disliked cousin Gwen, Ben Tennyson ends up with the powerful Omnitrix. But, intergalactic conqueror Vilgax is intent on gaining possession of the Omnitrix and sends his robots to get it.

“Washington B.C.” (episode two) - Ben goes up against Dr. Animo, a loony but brilliant scientist who created the Transmodulator, an invention which enlarges and distorts normal animals into gigantic, dangerous beasts.

“The Krakken” (episode three) - While camping out and taking a swim in a lake, Ben bumps into a sea monster.

“Permanent Retirement” (episode four) - In a homage to (or a blatant rip off of) INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, Ben, Max, and Gwen visit Aunt Vera’s tiny town and discover that the residents are exhibiting very weird behavior.

“Hunted” (episode five) - Vilgax sends three alien bounty hunters (Kraab, SixSix, and Hoverboard) after Ben’s Omnitrix.

“Tourist Trap” (episode six) - Feeling let down and bitterly bored with the tourist town of Sparksville and its main attraction of a giant ball of rubber bands, Max decides to play a prank but, instead, unleashes an electrical being called the Megawhatt.

“Kevin 11″ (episode seven) - Ben meets and hangs out with the psychotic, 11-year-old Kevin, who has the power to absorb energy. When Kevin learns of Ben’s Omnitrix powers, he begins to absorb those.

“The Alliance” (episode eight) - Ben goes up against an ornery female armored car robber who had been converted into a destructive alien cyborg named Rojo.

“Last Laugh” (episode nine) - We find out that Ben is afraid of clowns, which sucks for him because the main baddie in this episode is an evil, parasitic clown named Zombozo.

“Lucky Girl” (episode ten) - When Ben beats the wicked magician Hex, he takes from him a magical charm as a souvenir and offers it to Gwen. Gwen discovers that the charm has the power of incredible luck and becomes a superhero herself, called Lucky Girl. But, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and a prize must be paid for all of Gwen’s fortuitousness…

“A Small Problem” (episode eleven) - When there appears to be a glitch with the Omnitrix, Ben pounds the device in an attempt to activate it and ends up trapped in the form of the 5″ tall Grey Matter. An alien-obssessed man named Howell Wayneright captures him and presents him to the Organization, a clandestine group aiming to collect alien technology for its own purposes.

“Side Effects” (episode twelve) - When Ben catches a cold, it has the side effect of weakening his powerful alter-egos; it’s bad timing as he has to face off against an insect-controlling madman, who threatens the city with nuclear devastation.

“Secrets” (episode thirteen) - It’s the head alien, Vilgax himself, versus Ben 10. Plus, we get a first look at the underground facility beneath Mount Rushmore, which is the HQ of Grandpa Max’s former covert and X-Files-like goverment organization.

My son (who is almost 9) really loves this show. The animation and plot lines remind me (a little bit) of the Scooby-Do series that I watched as a kid. The twist here is that the hero in this series can transform himself into 10 different creatures with different types of powers. I think this is a pretty cool show, and I like the character of Ben.

This is the last film in director Michael Cacoyannis’s Greek Tragedy trilogy after his early Sixties “Electra” (featuring Irene Pappas in the title role) and his early Seventies “The Trojan Women” (which starred Katherine Hepburn, Vanessa Redgrave, Genevieve Bujold and, once again, Irene Pappas - as Helen of Troy).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Iphigenia! Click Here

All three movies are based on the works of Euripides - who was born approximately 484 BCE and died circa 406 BCE. Out of all the ancient Greek tragedians his work has arguably the most relevance to a contemporary audience as it eloquently demonstrates the causes and nature of human suffering especially in circumstances of war or multiple murder. Despite our current familiarity with these subjects we may not always perhaps be able to fully comprehend the nature of the painful emotional consequences involved.

“Iphigenia” is significantly more low-budget than the visually impressive second film in the trilogy and yet it has it’s own considerable emotional power. Like the first film of the three it is spoken in Greek with English subtitles.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Iphigenia! Click Here

As the film opens the Greek army is waiting at Aulis for the winds to pick up in order that they may sail to Troy. But they have been waiting many months and no such winds have arrived. The troops have become restless and are on the verge of mutiny. Agamemnon - the commander in chief - has sought advice from the Oracle at Delphi as to the best solution to this problem. To his shock and horror the answer returns that in order to sail to Troy and be successful in the ensuing war he must sacrifice his beloved daughter Iphigenia.

Initially Agamemnon refuses to perform such a deed. He attempts to seek any way out that he possibly can. But eventually he is persuaded by his brother Menelaus (the abduction of whose wife Helen sparked the Trojan War) that it is a tragic but necessary solution to their impasse.

Agamemnon decides to lure Iphigenia to Aulis on the pretext that she is to marry Achilles. But little does he know that Clytemnestra (played by Irene Pappas), his strong-willed wife, has decided (against his expressed instructions) to accompany her daughter to the proposed wedding.

The first half of this film is rather unimpressive. You have the feeling you are watching a fairly cheap Greek tv movie. And yet, from the point where Iphigenia (played by a marvellous swan-necked, androgenous young Greek actress) meets Agamemnon, her tortured father, the film really takes off. Clytemnestra finds out her husband’s terrible intention and attempts to recruit Achilles as her ally in order to save her teenage daughter’s life. But the wily Odysseus, with his demagogic influence on the Greek army, stands in their way.

The final twenty minutes of the film have as much emotional power as any play or movie I have ever seen. The sheer heartbreaking dilemma of the characters is conveyed in a stunningly convincing manner. At the screening I attended many people were on the verge of tears during this concluding section. I would unreservedly recommend this film to anyone with the slightest interest in either Classical History, Greek Tragic Theatre or an emotionally fulfilling cinematic experience.

Stunning, profound, expressive. This is Michael Cacoyannis’ greatest masterpiece of three Euripidean tragedies. His first was “Electra” which was a stark drama in Black and White shot at the actual ruins of King Agamemnon’s palace at Mycenae in Southern Greece. The second was in color - “The Trojan Woman” - a disturbing portrait of men’s cruelty to the vanquished in war. The third, my personal favorite, is this film. While it involves the sweep of historical events, it remains focused on a highly intense family drama - a heart wrenching decision between duty versus love.

What is the story of Iphigenia? Agamemnon assumes the honor, duty, and responsibility of leading the troops of Greece to war with Troy so as to avenge his brother’s mistreatment by a Trojan prince. Having killed a sacred deer of the goddess (Artemis), the King discovers the winds will not blow for the Greeks. That means his battle ships cannot launch. To persuade the Gods to give him the wind to victory, the King learns he must sacrifice that person most dear to him, his innocent and

virginal daughter, Iphiginia. Agamemnon’s reaction when he discovers the terrible choice he must make is a frightful anger. He clearly does not want to lose his flesh and blood, his innocence, but he is also realizes he is asking his troops to risk death in the upcoming war. Ultimately, and reluctantly, he chooses death for his daughter. Eventually she discovers her terrible destiny…as does her mother Clytemnestra. The mother refuses to allow it, but Iphigenia sees the honor of being martyred and chooses to die…and therefore to live for Greece.

The last moment of the film is everything Greek tragedy should be. We see the knife, Agamemnon’s stark reaction to the horror, and the wind blows at long last.

Part of the power of the film comes from the stark locations…Here we don’t see sumptuous palaces in, let’s say, Richard Burton’s “Helen of Troy.” Instead, the action is filmed in the rough landscapes of Greece reflecting the tough, untamed ancient world. And the cast…the cast is magnificent. Tatiana Papamoskou is beautiful and fair…yet she radiates something more…a real heroism. The King, played by Kostas Kazakos, is vital, brutal, charismatic, and surprisingly protective of his daughter. His wife, Irene Papas, plays the profoundly strong Greek woman to the core.

I cannot imagine anyone who won’t be moved by these stirring performances. Highly recommended.

I caught this mini-series on PBS in the 80’s and I have never forgotten it. I have, in fact, longed to see it again so much that for years I searched the internet for copies of it and hassled the people at Scarecrow Video. At last, I saw that it was available and snatched it up as soon as I could. Not only was I NOT disappointed with the show, I was even more intrigued and enchanted by the mystery and the wit and of course the lucious scenery of the Tuscan villa and surrounding landscape. Its a wonderful blend of Italian and English sentiment and character. While waiting for this to be available I read the Mortimer novel on which it was based and even that paled in comparison to this production!

I remember this mini-series on Masterpiece Theatre when it was shown in 1989. I loved the scenery (Italy/Tuscany) the terra cotta planter, the beautiful Tuscan architecture. Plus Sir John Gielgud was terrific as the “libidnous father” who weasles an invite to come along with the family. There’s a plot, and of course, there’s art: Piero della Francesco Renaissance artist, actually photographed in situ, and an almost documentary depiction of the Palia in Sienna. I studied in Tuscany some years later, and when I went to the town square in Sienna, I knew I’d seen it before (site of the Pallia). The dialogue is absolutely masterful at times. The author is the same as the one that wrote “Rumpole of the Bailey”. (Sorry Senior moment–can’t remember it–John Somebody.) The father/Gielgud at one time exclaims, “Oh! This coffee is as cold as chastity!.”

A stark ultra realistic film about the organised crime operations of the Naopolitan “Mafia”, called The Camorra. Do not expect “The Sopranos” or “Goodfellas” in style, no slick lines or flashy clothes. This film is almost documentary style, showing the slow dail grind and grim reality of the struggle to get paid. A must see for fans of mob films, with superb cinematography.

Gomorrah is an unforgettable film. Its theme is certainly the Camorra, the powerful criminal organization, but what makes this film so memorable, such an unforgettable experience is its artistic value, the power of every single scene. For Matteo Garrone, a former director of photography, every scene is a painting in motion. Unforgettable close-ups, upsetting and disturbing, this is a unique film.

It was pathetically inaccurate. The sole source they cited was the Secret History, and they had a Professor of Asiatic studies from Columbia U for historical advisor; yet, even ignoring the usual ‘they were vicious barbarians’ slant, the piece was riddled with mistakes. The first thing I caught was a misquote from the Secret History citing the legend of the five brothers as a story about Chingghis’s immediate family. After that I paid more careful attention. They did not mention his name ‘Temujin’ once but rather saying he was born ‘Genghis’. How can they claim to be biography and not even mention the man’s name? They went so far as to claim his wife and mother started the war between him and Jamuga out of jealousy over their gay love. Another glairing mistake was the when and why of invading the Song. They glossed over any political interaction as Genghis ‘finding an excuse to go to war’. For an amateur historian like me to so easily spot as many mistakes as I did is pretty sad. A waste of money!

How could history be put so simply like A&E does in every biography I bought about China and Asian history? I try to understand these works are for the general public, but the conclusion is that general public is being mislead with this kind of material. My first experience was with the Mao’s biography, then with the one about Marco Polo. The worst is that I bought also the Pol Pot and Chiang Kaishek biographies and have not seen them yet.
The Gengis Khan biography is full of awkward commentaries with emphasis on a supossed bloody nature of the mongols. They were no bloodier than were the rest of societies that engaged on conquest, to say the europeans themselves. The Gengis Khan was more than strategist and a ruthless leader of hordes and tribes from Mongolia.
There is no analisys about the rising of the Yuan dinasty that was created after the mongols took CHina and the cultural, historical and political implications of the east-west contact.
The emphasis is put on extremely doubtful anecdotaries, that produces a sensasionalist account about the creator of the biggest empire of the world history.

I love the first three Indy films. Like so many others I was greatly looking forward to seeing a new one. I thought (or hoped) that the very long time they took to come up with a script meant they were polishing it to a brilliant shine. After seeing the movie, I conclude it was really a long negotiation between Lucas, Spielberg, and Ford, with some of them eager to make a crappy movie, and some of them not, with the end result being crappy, but perhaps not as crappy as it might have been.

The movie started with a bit of promise (other than the infantile CGI prairie dog). I’m not as offended by the nuclear fridge scene as many are, because I know those mock towns weren’t built at Ground Zero (or they would have been vaporized). They were built at a distance to judge the effect of the blast on places some miles from the explosion. So while it’s not credible for Indy to survive being tossed around that much, he didn’t exactly survive a nuclear explosion. Some of the other early scenes, such as those where Indy is actually discovering something, are also good.

Still…

About halfway through the movie, despite my fervent desire to like it, I realized it just wasn’t working for me. No suspense. No real sense of urgency or danger. Low stakes. Too many marginal or pointless characters. Too much cartoon nonsense going on, far less believable than anything from the previous films (the stupid monkey vine swinging, Marian’s idiotic tree-driving stunt, the multiple waterfall drops…none of it scary, none of it remotely convincing, or even fun). Marian’s long-awaited big reveal was one of the biggest, flattest duds in film history. She shows up and spends most of the rest of the movie just tagging along with a dazed grin on her face like she was just grateful to be there, a flaccid dishrag compared to the character from the first film. Not Karen Allen’s fault…she was just thrown in for nostalgia’s sake, and was poorly written. Mutt was actually not a bad character, but I don’t need or want him to be Indy’s son. Is there any worse cliche in fiction than the Son He Never Knew He Had? I realize Spielberg and Lucas are fascinated by father issues, but I’m not. And then there’s the whole point of the movie…the skull and the aliens…ehhhh. Who cares? The finale was a muddled jumble of flashing lights and wind that meant nothing and evoked nothing but tedium. Remember at the end of the previous films, where the characters actually seem to notice that something extraordinary has happened, were even scared, or traumatized just a little bit (okay, not so much in Crusade, where they quickly shake off any aftereffects and devolve into slapstick and lose all interest in their surroundings). Not this time. The giant flying saucer takes off, and Indy and his massive crew of sidekicks start cracking jokes.

I’m inclined to blame Lucas for most of this mess. He’s made a habit of lapses of taste and judgement since…hmm…”Howard the Duck”?

I don’t want to see this movie again, and I don’t want to own it. I hope they don’t make another, because these guys have proven they no longer have what it takes.

What a mess this movie was. Good to see Indy again but you can tell from the start that Lucas had approval over this script after rumors he threw out so many better scripts out the window (Frank Durapont anyone?).

Indy surviving nuclear blasts, Rodents coming up from the ground and grinning at the camera, Shia LaBouf swinging from vines in a jungle with Monkeys and hardly any Marion. She barely has anything to say.

Then you get the ending which comes out of a different movie.

Suspending Disbelief is one thing but you gotta check your brain and taste at the door for this one.

Lets hope they don’t make any spinoffs with Indy’s kid.
