Originally broadcast on CBS in March 2002, 9/11 is an extraordinary record of that fateful day in New York City. This one-of-a-kind documentary was originally conceived as a portrait of 21-year-old Tony Benetatos, a firefighter trainee at Manhattan’s Duane Street firehouse, located seven blocks from the World Trade Center. By the time filming was finished, brothers Jules and Gedeon Naudet had captured history in the making, including the only image of the first jetliner striking Tower 1, and the only footage from within the tower as it collapsed. This is not, however, a film about the murderous nightmare of terrorism. It’s the ultimate rite-of-passage drama, more immediate and meaningful than any fiction film could be, with Benetatos and his supportive colleagus emerging as heroes of the first order. Sensitively narrated by codirector and fellow firefighter James Hanlon, 9/11 will endure forever as a tribute to those, living and dead, who witnessed hell on that sunny Tusday morning. –Jeff Shannon

The fourth film in FranCois Truffaut’s quasi-autobiographical Antoine Doinel cycle finds the idealistic child-man (played by Truffaut’s alter ego and French new wave icon Jean-Pierre Leaud) married to his sweetheart Christine (Claude Jade) and still plugging away at odd jobs. When his experiments in the florist trade burn his bouquts to a smoky black ruin, he decides that it’s time for another trade, and lands a job sending radio-controlled toy boats around a miniature harbor mock-up. It’s about that time that he learns of his impending fatherhood, but he throws a monkey wrench into his new happiness when he becomes obsessed with a beautiful young Japanese woman (Hiroku Berghaur). Truffaut enlivens Doinel’s courtyard apartment with the bustle and business of neighbors, creating a warm sense of community reminiscent of the works of Jean Renoir. He also pays homage to comic auteur Jacqus Tati in meticulously constructed comic bits and a hilarious cameo by Tati’s famous character, M. Hulot. However, he tempers the giddy screwball kookiness that characterized the previous film in the cycle, Stolen Kisses, with a less forgiving disposition toward Antoine’s passionate irresponsibility and emotional impulsiveness. In one of Truffaut’s finest moments ever, he plays out a conversation between the separated but still in love couple with a hard-earned sense of reflective maturity: “I love you,” she confesses, “but I don’t want to see you.” It’s a comedy with serious edges as Truffaut decides it’s time for Antoine to grow up. –Sean Axmaker

Three years before John Woo made A Better Tomorrow in 1986, this densely textured police procedural was laying the groundwork for the modern Hong Kong crime movie. It operates in an unusual social framework: all the central criminals are recent illegal refugees from mainland China, struggling to adjust to the Westernized lifestyle of Hong Kong. (Every second location seems to be an outpost of American cultural imperialism, from McDonald’s to 7-Eleven.) Director Johnny Mak is a skilled action and suspense craftsman, and his view of criminal activity is blunt and practical; the amorality of his desperate characters is alloyed. Hard up for funds, the crooks agree to commit a contract killing, and botch the job grusomely. But the only aspect of the incident that upsets them is the fact that they’ve been played for saps (the victim turns out to be a cop). If these brutal thugs are nevertheless sympathetic it’s because they are clumsily at sea in the big city, and because they stick together. The apocalyptic final shootout is a first-class visceral thrill ride. –David Chute
