Haunted by an incident that happened in the ring, American boxer Sean Thornton (John Wayne) returns to his Irish birthplace, seeking only his roots and a quiet, peaceful life.

He soon falls in love with the beautiful, tempestuous Mary Kate (Maureen O’Hara). She is equally taken with him, but won’t marry without the consent of her stubborn, blustering brother, Will (Victor McLaglen), who disapproves the match.

With the help of a well-intentioned scheme arranged by their friends, Mary Kate gets her brother’s permission and Sean and she wed. Relationships spoil soon after, however, when Will refuses to pay the rightful dowry. Sean doesn’t care, but Mary Kate is outraged and wants Sean to have it out with Will.

Time and again Sean backs down - determined not to use his fists - his inner tension building the whole while. But eventually he will have to decide between losing his wife’s love and respect and facing his greatest fear.

This was an important and personal project for John Ford (whose real name was Sean O’Feeney). That his heart and those of his cast members were in what they were doing shows through. The fact that much of the film was shot on location in Ireland (on location shoots were somewhat unusual at the time) also adds an authentic flavor.

Barry Fitzgerald was at his comedic best here, and Ward Bond’s performance as a priest has several simply unforgettable moments.

The Quiet Man is a charming classic and among Ford’s best (in fact, it won him an Oscar for Best Director). It’s funny, romantic, and always entertaining. It also features an exuberant score (courtesy of Victor Young) and one of the longest and most memorable knock-down, drag-out fights ever committed to film.

-DVD-

Two different editions of this DVD have been released with almost

identical packaging. Be careful which one you buy! (I wish I’d known this).

“John Wayne Collection” edition (*1 star)

This is the one I bought (ISBN 0-7820-1057-1, ASIN: B00000I1KV). It has “John Wayne Collection” printed on a green band at the top. Its special features include “The Making of the Quiet Man” documentary & the theatrical trailer. DON’T BUY THIS VERSION, PLEASE. The sound is decent, but the picture is absolutely terrible: blurry and full of splotches, almost unwatchable.

“Collector’s Edition”

Apparently, the sound and picture quality are okay on the “Collector’s Edition” DVD (ASIN: B00006JMRD), whose special features include Commentary by Maureen O’Hara, the theatrical trailer, “The Joy of Ireland” documentary with Maureen O’Hara, “Remembering The Quiet Man” Montage, and “The Making of The Quiet Man.”

I will not, as some feel necessary, go over the story/characters/performances of this film. Suffice to say, this is one the most enjoyable films ever made, blarney or not.

Rather, what I would like to briefly comment on is the utterly pathetic transfer of this classic film to DVD. It states quite clearly on the back of the cover that this film has been digitally remastered. I took that to mean both video and audio. WRONG. The picture quality of this DVD is shocking, one of the worst I have ever seen. Believe me when I say this — the VHS version I purchased in 1991 has a better video clarity than this. At times it’s actually difficult to make out the actors features. The company behind this, ARTISAN I believe they are called, should be ashamed. I have a copy of the recently released and remastered CASABLANCA DVD. That film was made in 1942, yet it looks as if it was just made, such is the sharpness of the video. The Quiet Man deserved the same treatment, but didn’t get it. Shame on ARTISAN.

Although it has been almost a year since “Full Metal Panic! - The Second Raid” premiered in Japan, US fans can finally rejoice over the release of the long-awaited sequel to one of the most unlikely hits in recent Anime history. With the same cast of delightful characters, wonderfully original story, and fabulous art and character design, the “Full Metal Panic” franchise comes to a thrilling and unexpected ending that will not leave a single fan unsatisfied.

Although peace seemed to return to the life of our young hero, Sousuke Sagara at the end of Season 1, it’s certainly not easy being a teenage mercenary-soldier-elite being called to battles all over the world AND trying to protect his lovely high-school friend Kaname Chidori at the same time. Things don’t get any easier for Mithril either, when on a routine mission in a remote third-world country, it is discovered that rogue governments have acquired anti-ECS (Electronic Cloaking System) technology, as well as other high-tech weaponry which poses a threat unlike any Mithril has faced before. Tasked with hunting down the organization responsible for distributing such technology is the famous Uruz Team, consisting of our old friends Mao, Kurz, and Sousuke. In the process of hunting down this mysterious organization - known only as “Amalgam” - Sousuke struggles with both his own troubled emotions as well as new enemies - including two merciless, young female assassins. And just when it seems things are at their worst, Sousuke receives the unthinkable order - to return to base - permanently. Nothing is certain in this thrilling conclusion - not even Death.

Without a doubt, “Full Metal Panic! - The Second Raid” is perhaps one of the best Anime SEQUELS ever made - I stress the word “Sequel” to avoid any misinterpretations. Brought back once more is the fantastic original cast and crew, including the English Dub (Funimation purchased the rights for “The Second Raid”, but the cast is the same as the ADV Original dubs of the first two). Also returning is Music Composer Toshihiko Sahashi, whose capable hands craft another great soundtrack. And once again, Shoji Gatoh’s writing creates a fantastic story, even-further-developed characters, and an unforgettable experience overall. This Anime is still one of my absolute favorites, and will most likely be so for a very long time to come.

Note - There is no word yet on whether this DVD set (released by Funimation Entertainment) will contain the 2006-released OAV, starring Teletha Testarossa. However, as with most OAVs, one can hope that it will be released as a special feature/additional episode in the final disc. But again, it is not certain yet.

After a slight comedic detour with Fumoffu, Full Metal Panic has returned to the roots of its first anime version, which focused more on the action and drama with interludes of humor. Like the first season, The Second Raid alternates between the the dangerous missions of Mithril and the almost as dangerous interactions between Sousuke and Chidori at school. As this excellent first volume begins, Sousuke and his team, the beautiful Mao and the perverted pretty boy Kurz are sent in to take out a despotic dictator who’s managed to get his hands on some highly advanced weapons technology. We are also introduced to the main villain of the piece, a insane psychotic named Gates who is a cross between the charming personalities of the Joker and Darth Vader. The thing that makes him more of a threat is that he operates a Venom AS equipped with the Lambda Driver similar to the one Gauron used to almost kill Sousuke in the first show. But unlike Sousuke, he can activate the Driver at will. Sagara is beginning to lose hope that he will ever be able to control its power. But he might not have to worry too much longer, because Gates’s plan is to seize Sagara’s AS for himself. And he’s got two deadly assassins and spies in Mithril to help him out.

This first volume started out a little rough at the edges because the transitions from Fumoffu style school hijinks to two killer sisters touching each other inappropriately in the shower just didn’t gel. When the show focuses on one aspect, either the comedy, or the action/drama, it works incredibly well. But when it mixes the two in the same episode, it seems unnatural. Thankfully most of the dvd does the former. Even though this is rated for ages 14 and up, there is some full on nudity, and some extremely graphic violence. For example, a Mithril agent gets his throat cut with a knife in extreme closeup with nothing left to the imagination. The animation overall is incredible for a TV show and the writing is also pretty good, especially in the episodes where the Mithril team walks into a trap in a tunnel labyrinth, which really ratchets up the suspense. Excellent start to the series.

DVD EXTRAS:

There is short bonus episode that is really a teaser trailer for the series. There are also three extremely interesting documentaries: The first is a Japanese Self-Defense Tour exhibition that the show’s staff attended to get reference for the vehicles and weapons used in FMP. The second is location shooting in Hong Kong by the director and author of the novels which is a nice tour of the city. Finally, there is a brief history of the Light Novel in Japan, with a focus on the publisher of the FMP books. Also includes clean opening/closing.

Ergo Proxy is a very interesting start to a new science fiction anime. I ended up enjoying these first four episodes a lot more than I thought I would, but I find it hard to give this a complete recommendation. Series like this that try to be all philosphical and deep, and with a title like Ergo Proxy how could it try to be anything else, have a tendency to fail spectacularly in the end because their storylines end up being crushed under the wait of philosophical mumbo-jumbo that the creators clearly have only a superficial understanding of.

This story takes place far in the future. Earth is all but uninhabitable thanks to ecological disaster. Domed cities exsist where people, the chosen few called Citizens, can live in a comsumers paradise. In one such domed city, Romdo, humanity lives in comfort with help from AutoReivs, robots that serve as companions, walking PDAs, and 24-hour spying devices for the central government. The city currently has two problems. A terrible monster called a Proxy has escaped the government’s confinement and is rampaging through the city. The second is that AutoReivs are being infected with the cogito virus, a rogue program that makes the machines self-aware and unruly.

Inspector Re-l Mayer, a rather gothy looking policewoman and granddaughter of the city’s overlord whose use of eye-shadow makes Tammy Faye Baker’s comestic use look moderate in comparision, is investigating an incident where infected AutoReivs have killed civilians. At the crime scene, she runs into the Proxy. When her superiors try to make her think she hallucinated the incident, Re-l starts putting the pieces together between the Proxy and a man named Vincent Law.

Besides an interesting plot-line, Ergo Proxy has a very striking dark look to it. It does make some of the scenes hard to see, like the first couple minutes of the first episode, but over-all its very attractive. It’s all complimented by an atmospheric soundtrack.

As a 23 year old anime fan (been a fan since i was around 13) there is very few titles out there that catch my attention anymore. Most lack substance and story. Music is sometimes an issue, as well as animation. Very rarely can a show or movie pull off all of these categories. I’m happy to report that Ergo Proxy delivers them all. The animation is crisp and full of life.. an occasional 3d CGI scene is used (what shows don’t now a days?). The music is also outstanding. Very minimal and ambient at times, often with an eerie edge to it. Other times its fast paced and techno-ish. The story is the true winner here.. exploring areas of man and machine not yet done in anime. The lead character, a woman, is interesting to watch and her character design is pretty unique. I would sum this show up best as a cross between Witch Hunter Robin and Ghost in the Shell. Thats not too surprising though considering Ergo Proxy has the same director that Witch Hunter Robin did.

The transforming and redemptive power of forgiveness is the major theme in this moving film from Brazil. The two leads, Dora, an older woman whose self-imposed sheltered life has been long shut-off from the yearnings and longings that make us human, and Josue, a young boy who forces her to confront her detachment as such, move the viewer from a jolting start to a warm, satisfying ending.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Central Station! Click Here

This is a film I never get tired of. The performances are great; the musical score is subtle, yet significant; the people and places are compelling; and the story, although perhaps somewhat manipulative, is overall enjoyable.

Some reviewers have side-stepped the warmth of this movie in attacking it as pretentious, cliche, and overtly sentimental. Although these are valid arguments, I felt that overall these points are forgiveable and easy to overlook.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Central Station! Click Here

This is a film of contrasts. From Rio de Janeiro’s Metropolis-like urban hell to Brasil’s Nordeste - a barren place of barren and huge landscapes and unmittigated Faith.
Dora’s character, played by sublime actress Fernanda Montenegro (Oscar nominated and certainly worthy of winning…) evolves from an urban Rio de Janeiro’s letter writer-devil’ll do all to a mother figure to street kid Josué after his own mother dies.
After that this is a spiritual road movie - for Josué’s long lost father - and for Dora’s long lost faith in herself and in other human beings - which she eventually achieves most purely in Josués character.
This is a powerful movie. Christianly so. Any religion-so. But mostly a movie about trust in the residual bits of humanity that allow those in near-despair to believe. Maybe not in God as such - but in christian individuals as such…
So is this a religious movie? Not exactly. And not at all a Catholic one.
But it is a delightful innocent mix-up of beliefs, with a kind of untainted christianism standing out.

Blue Kite is truly a great example of the new chinese cinema that gathered the attention from all over the world. First of all it is very realistic, very honest and very touching. Director manages to melt this 3 different emotion so well with the great acting and a well written story. Story starts with a baby’s birth in early Mao era china and slowly continues its journey in China’s political history of 50’s and 60’s. In this movie we witness a family’s struggle to keep up with the times against all political unstabilities of those days. A mother’s struggle to grow her child after loosing 2 husbands and other misfortunes that fell on her and her family is extrmely well portrayed and acting is well executed by the actors. Camera captures verything as real and sometimes like a historical documentary that is set in a family’s circle. Overall Blue Kite is a brilliant film and a good referance point of the new Chinese cinema. Check it out.

As most other people have commented, the film is about a tragic story of common Chinese people under Mao’s communism rule. I will focus more on my thoughts about why the film is named “The Blue Kite” as it seems have little relationship with the topic of the film, as especially why there are so many scenes of the blue kite stuck on trees.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Blue Kite! Click Here

The story started when Tietou’s parents got married and a bunch of children chasing a blue kite but it is stuck on the top of tree. One child tries to fetch it by climbing over the roof. Adults come out and warn the children and one says “I will get a new one for you for sure”. This scene is certainly the happiest moment in the film as people are cheerful. The historic background is that China just had communism revolution and most people believed it would bring prosperity and democracy. Common people are cheerful at that time.

As Anti-Rightist political movement came and Tietou’s family is shattered by political accusations, soon there was widespread famine in China but eventually people survived and once again Tietou believed that his kite can fly. People are more hopeful if not cheerful that 10 years ago. People still believe in the system. And finally Tietou’s mother remarried a high-ranking party official and things seem to get better.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Blue Kite! Click Here

And then cultural revolution started, no one could escape the political accusation and Tietou’s stepfather became a target of struggle. Finally Tietou lying on the ground, beated up by Red Guards, watching the kite broken in the wind, listless on the treetop. And finally I realized that the kite stands for Hope, people’s hope for a better life.

The kite was stuck several times (apparently due to mistake or accident, certainly having political implication), and Chinese people were forgetful of these events and simply hoping things can get better and despite the apparent tragedies, people’s hope is not shattered as the blue kite is still intact. People were actually willing to cooperate with all sorts of political movements and hope all the tragedies were caused by themselves. But eventually when cultural revolution broke out and people are brutally beated by Red Guards, hope is shattered, at least in the mind and eyes of Tietou as he saw the broken kite. People are not longer fasinated by political movements and blls**t any more.

The film is certainly bleaker than a similar one called “To Live”. It is certainly understandable since different people endured different harshness under Mao’s rule and some are totally disillusioned by Mao’s communism and own tragedies, some actually cherish life more and get more hopeful.

But this certainly is not a documentary since it only uses the political events as background. It is valueable to be part of the learning of modern China as it depicts the impact on many people at Mao’s rule and that period of history greatly shapes how modern Chinese people think and behave in many implicit ways.

This 2000 episode of the PBS’s NOVA is narrated by actor Stacy Keach and, as the product description indicates, takes an in-depth look at the hot siege weapon of the Middle Ages, the trebuchet (trey-boo-shay.)

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: Medieval Siege! Click Here

Come to think of it, after just re-reading the product description I think its `travel back to the Middle Ages’ and `experience the chaos’ is a little misleading. Basically the Middle Ages are set in the background, source material for the meat of the program. MEDIEVAL SIEGE is a low-tech version of a dear departed cable television show called `Junkyard Wars.’ Here, two teams - one American, the other French - using ancient illustrations and descriptions, try to build a working, castle-busting trebuchet.

The teams aren’t playing around, either. There are medieval weapons specialists (everything has a specialist, doesn’t it?), a forty-plus man team of traditional artisans, a pipe puffing scientist and a pair of forty-foot tall Douglas firs used to build the main arm of the weapon. A trebuchet, by the way, is a large (in this case VERY large) `see-saw’ with a heavy weight on one end. Stick a pea in the bowl of a spoon, pull the spoon back and let it fly and you’ve got the trebuchet concept down.

Buy,Download, Or Stream NOVA: Medieval Siege! Click Here

MEDIEVAL SIEGE was fascinating. Until time starts running down and the workers pull out the socket wrenches and acetylene torches the techniques used are all traditional - ever see someone try to shave down a five-ton tree using 13th century tools? The scale is daunting - one trebuchet requires ten tons of lead counter-weight rings, the other uses a swinging basket that holds fourteen tons. The target is a newly constructed castle wall. The drama is inherent in the situation. Can they figure out how to build a trebuchet without any surviving model to work from? Will the meager historical references to trebuchets provide enough information to build a working model? Will they be able to loft a 250-pound sandstone ball three-hundred yards, much less hit a relatively small target? This program answers all those questions and more in a fun filled sixty minutes.

My boys enjoy this movie and cheer with the craftsmen as they launch their trebuchets. Excellent for teaching material on life in medieval times. Watch this and then view Peter Jackson’s depiction of the attack on Minas Tirith in LOTR with new appreciation, since he shows the orcs with catapults and the city with trebuchets. Then buy “The art of the Catapult” and make your own (providing you have a large backyard and a helmit, of couse) We made our model with popcycle sticks.

Any film that can gather the family together for a fun, wholesome, and entertaining view, and hold the interest of all for it’s entire length, gets 5 stars in my book. “Casper” is one of those films. It may not go down as some great piece of cinematic art, but it is one that all generations can enjoy, will leave you with a smile, and something to talk about with kids afterwards.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casper! Click Here

Based on the old comic book stories, “Casper” is a very friendly but very lonely ghost. He lives in an old mansion, that has seen better days. He is not alone in this huge house though, he lives with his three very nasty(but funny) uncles,”Stretch”, “Stinky” and “Fatso”. Casper only wants someone to move in,so he could have a friend, the uncles on the other hand, do their very best to scare away any visitors.

So when a greedy woman inherits the property, and believes there is a buried treasure inside, she hires an array of ‘ghostbusters’ to rid the house of all spirits. None seem to be able to handle this terrible trio, until one day a ghost psychiatrist and his lonely daughter(also looking for a friend),move in and try to tame the threesome. From there it’s a fun and wild ride, and a touching story of friendship.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Casper! Click Here

The film has a terrific cast that works well with the wonderful animation and special effects. Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci are the father and daughter team that befriend these spirits. Cathy Moriarty(”Forget Paris”), and Eric Idle as her bumbling assistant add their talents as they go for the treasure.Lots of big names are cameoed throughout. Don Novello, and Dan Aykroyd reprise their roles of Father Guido Sarducci, and ghostbuster Dr. Raymond Stantz for brief appearances, just to name a couple.

The voices including Brad Garrett as “Fatso” are marvelous, and you can never go wrong when James Horner scores a film with just the right touches.

It’s rated PG for some occassional mild language and thematic elements, and at an hour and a half, it just the right length, and is a delightful way to spend some laugh out loud family time together.

Ghostly fun……enjoy…..Laurie

Who says there are no such things as ghosts? Not if there is the ghostly inhabitants of Whipstaff Manor in Friendship, Maine!
This desolate mansion is then, in the words of one of the members of the Ghostly Trio of Whipstaff, ‘intruded’ by Kat Harvey (Christina Ricci) and her eccentric father Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman), a ghost therapist. Carrigan Crittenden (Cathy Moriarty) had hired Dr. Harvey to exorcise the ghosts, including Casper the friendly ghost and his three obnoxious uncles, Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie, aspiring to gain Whipstaff’s ‘buried gold’.
Intertwining humour, all-time ‘floating’ fun and a modern Cinderella story, ‘Casper’ promises to please as a movie which is compelling, hilarious, captivating, heart-warming, witty and above all, truly ‘fleshtastic’.
‘Casper’ is recommended for any audience, regardless of age. … ‘Casper’ … manages to appear endearing and ultimately special.
The magic of Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci as well as that of director Brad Silberling, executive producer Steven Spielberg, and other producers weaves between each and every scene to eventually lift us off our feet.
Above all, I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Casper is my all time favourite character. Truly fleshtastic. BOOlistic! You won’t BOOlieve it until you see it.

Pure is available for streaming or downloading.

Click Here to Stream or Download Pure

“Pure” could be viewed simply as a drug addiction movie, but I was relieved to find that it isn’t simply that, as I’ve seen too many overwrought addiction movies at this point. “Pure” is the story of a 10-year-old boy trying to save his mother -save her from heroin, from her dealer, and from the law. Mel (Molly Parker) has been overwhelmed by life’s demands since the death of her husband left her with 2 young boys to raise. She turned to heroin for consolation, but it got the best of her. She can no longer hold down a job or meet her children’s needs. Young Paul (Harry Eden) knows only that his mother is sick, and he will do anything to help her -the household chores, look after his little brother, even prepare the “medicine” that makes Mel feel better. But Paul slowly realizes that something is not quite right with his mother. He doggedly tries to understand and resolves to help his mother kick her habit. But Paul finds himself navigating a complicated world of conflicting interests and values: his possessive grandmother (Geraldine McEwan), his mother’s manipulative dealer (David Wenham), a police detective (Gary Lewis), Social Services, and his new friend Louise (Keira Knightley), a young woman with a heroin problem of her own.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pure! Click Here

I love the genuineness of Paul and Mel’s relationship. Paul acts exactly as a bright, independent child would. He’s fiercely protective of his mother. And he does what’s best as he sees it, with limited perspective and little power, to help his mother and preserve his family. He pursues his goal with the single-mindedness and acceptance of a child and the determination of an adult. Paul and Mel express a closeness that is characteristic of a parent and child who work together to survive under difficult circumstances. They’re flawed, and they know it. “Pure” has a great supporting cast, but there are many moments when Paul carries this film on his shoulders, which is a credit to writer Alison Hume, director Gillies MacKinnon, and Harry Eden, who was actually 12 years old when “Pure” was made. Keira Knightley was 16 or 17 when she played Louise, a likable young waitress who refuses to get her life under control no matter what the consequences, and Knightly fans will find this a promising example of her early work. “Pure”’s pacing could have been better. It’s plodding at times. But the film’s young perspective and honest emotion won me over.

The DVD (Indican 2006): Bonus features include a theatrical trailer, a Photo Gallery of 11 publicity stills and behind-the-scenes photos, a Poster Progression slideshow of 8 movie posters, a slideshow of 8 cast and crew bios (text), and an interview with director Gillies MacKinnon (34 min). The interview with MacKinnon is interesting, but it seems interminable. Too much of a good thing. He discusses the idea that “Pure” is not about heroin but about a “little boy’s heroic attempt to save his mother’”, in contrast to his 1990 film “Needle”, working with a child actor, the reason the film unfortunately got an 18 rating in the UK, creating the mother/son relationship, colors, camera work, score, and more.

I probably shouldn’t review it so soon after watching it, because my “intellectual side” probably isn’t online right now. This is a powerful drama, flawless in conception and execution, about a ten-year-old boy with a dead father, a mother addicted to heroin, and various and sundry other problems to deal with. I’ve watched two British films about heroin addiction this year and been moved to tears by both, but I’ve never met a heroin user in my life. We don’t have heroin in Watha. We probably don’t have British DVDs in the stores either. We don’t even have stores. But I digress. If you see this one, grab it. I know I’ll watch it again. I just don’t know how many times. Oh, and if you’re an author, consider this. “There are no minor characters.” If you’d like to see this premise in action, get this film. After all the crap I’ve reviewed this week, you don’t know how happy it makes me to cite an instance where a novelist can learn from a filmmaker.

“I Am Legend” is not a film that sticks closely to it’s source material. While that is it’s biggest flaw, it is also where it shines. If you ha told me two years ago that I’d get misty-eyed watching Will Smith sing “Three Little Birds” in a big budget motion picture I’d have laughed myself silly, but this adaptation of Richard Mathson’s untouchable novel that -while itself being a vampire story- inspired the entire zombie film genre as we know it takes the story we all know whether we’ve read the book or not and turns it into an exceptionally personal affair for all of us. One man. One dog. A familiar metropolis deserted by day, but crawling with death by nightfall. This is our setting and it’s one that never gets old for me.

Buy,Download, Or Stream I Am Legend! Click Here

The plague that wipes out Robert Neville’s world is never fully explained, simply inferred to be the result of some sort of failed cure for cancer. Gone from the novel and the original Vincent Price classic, The Last Man on Earth, is the long struggle of Neville to save his ill daughter, his wife’s tranformation, and the shocking actions of the US government to contain the plague. What it left is simply one man, alone trying to maintain his sanity and hopelessly searching for a cure to a disease that has already wiped humanity off the face of the earth and left the “survivors” as rabid vampiric horrors. It’s sad, it’s pathetic, and it’s perfectly human. Will Smith has a penchant for picking terrible, schmaltzy films to star in, but no one can deny his talent and charisma as a leading man. Naturally, this is a film he must carry single-handedly and he does an awesome job of it; he’s dramatic, he’s relateable, and at times, he is funny. The humor is that of the dark and inappropriate kind, but in a world like his, that is all there is left.

The vampires/zombies/infected in this are all CG and more than a bit reminiscent of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. I’m not a fan of these kind of effects when practical would have been more effective and was acutely aware of the fact that I watching computer-generated monsters, but they worked nonetheless. The infected prove to be terrifying foes for Neville to face, combining suprising cunning, inhuman strength, and impossible agility (hence the CG). Their only weakness is that sunlight kills them almost instantly. Neville plays a game of cat-and-mouse with them, gathering supplies, researching cure, and searching for survivors by day while making sure to get back to his fortified apartment before nightfall when the creatures come out to hunt for his hiding place. More than a few shades of 28 Days Later are present in this film, which is funny considering the book and it’s film offspring are largely what provided the elements of that film. So I guess the genre has officially come full circle now.

Ultimately, it’s the personal touches that make “I Am Legend” such a treat. Bob Marley provides both the soundtrack to Robert Neville’s day and the inspiration for his work, which is both ironic and uplifting at times. This may sound strange for a horror flick, but if you are a fan of Marley (himself a Legend) it makes all the sense in the world as you watch. Watching Neville attempt to interact with mannequins he’s set up as he returns the movies he rents (in alphabetical order, one at a time) and seeing him snap when one of the figures is moved is both amusing and, at times, intensely disturbing. When relief finally comes, Neville finds he has lost the ability to interact with other humans at all and is relegated to performing lines from “Shrek”, which is playing on his television at the time. The ending is a complete 180 from the book which is disappointing, but not as corny as it could have been. The novel I Am Legend has one of the most brilliant and darkly ironic endings ever put on paper, but director Francis Lawrence didn’t ruin it by go for the happy ending either. The result is a compromise between the pitch blackness of the book and the cloying cheese that many Will Smith fans love. It turns out a bittersweet and hopeful conclsion that should satisfy both while not thrilling either. But I left the theater with “Redemption Song” still ringing in my ears and a satisfied feeling. If only every movie could do that for me.

“I Am Legend” fails to adapt the book of the same name to the big screen, but succeeds in so many other ways. I can’t give it a perfect score, but I will give it a very hearty recommendation to fans of Will Smith, zombies, vampires, and Bob Marley. Enjoy.

I Am Legend can’t get a fair shake. This Will Smith-led production is the third attempt Hollywood has made to adapt the brilliant novel. None of the adaptions have truly done the novel justice (which is a shame), but this version has come the closest.

Here we have a brilliant beginning; footage of a scientist (played beautifully by Emma Thompson) saying humbly that she’s discovered a way to cure cancer. Fast forward a few years, and New York is utterly devoid of human life, save for Robert Neville (Will Smith). As the first half of the film progresses, we learn about his meager living, spending the day harvesting and trying to discover a cure, even now, while spending the night huddled in his protected home as creatures prowl.

His only companion, a wonderful dog named Sam, protects Neville as Neville protects him. They have a friendship based on loneliness and the human need for someone or something to hold onto. Sam is Neville’s only connection to the past and the only way to represent what little humanity is left, either in the world or Neville himself. This period in the movie is pitch perfect, puncuated by one or two terrifying sequences that instill genuine horror.

Unfortunately, the last half of the film deteriorates into an action movie that completely changes the meaning of the words “I Am Legend.” Don’t get me wrong, it’s mostly done really well. Constantine director Francis Lawrence has a good handle on the action and delivers some good scenes. But, it becomes muddled and veers off completely from the novel. My biggest complaint, though, is the use of CGI. Instead of using real flesh and blood actors, all of the creatures are created with CG and they look incredibly fake when lined up next to real people. In the beginning, it’s not a problem but as you see more of them (and you will) it’s glaringly obvious. And annoying.

All of this I was expecting going in, though. Considering that the film was co-written by Akiva Goldsman who also wrote I, Robot, I knew this version would stray from the source material just as I, Robot did. As a movie, it’s genuinely thrilling and creates the perfect balance of tension and action through most of its entirety. And, surprisingly, Will Smith shows that he’s a really good actor as he has to not only tackle many conflicting emotions during the two hour run time but he also has to do so without having much of anyone to react to. Spending a good hour or so without another single actor for Will Smith to work with was a gamble and it paid off.

Your enjoyment of the film is entirely based on what you bring to the table. If you’re coming to this film expecting to see the book come to life you’ll be sorely disappointed. However, if you’re looking for a good action movie that actually has a good story and a human aspect, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one as thrilling recently.

I watched the series previously before I bought the umd but I recommend this to any anime fan who would like to watch a little anime on the run. The episodes are fantastic. The show is a rich mixture of horror, action and a little comedy. I don’t recommend this show for children because of language and content but for everyone else BUY IT! Also check out the manga if you love the show.
