I had heard of “Shanghai Noon” when it had first come out, but didn’t have much interest in it. But a few weeks ago I decided to try it out once and found it thoroughly entertaining!

Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) decides to leave the Forbidden City of China to go off to America. But when she arrives in Carson City with her English teacher, she realizes she has been in fact kidnapped, master minded by a traitor, Lo Fong (Roger Yuan). It’s up to the Chinese Imperial Guards to save her. One Imperial Guard, Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) is separated from his fellow mates and is stuck in the West without a clue where Carson City is! He ties up with Indians for a while, marrying the beautiful Indian princess, Falling Leaves (Brandon Merrill) then gradually teams up with ‘not quite your average outlaw’ Roy O’Bannon (Owen Wilson). With the Marshall Nathan Van Cleef (Xander Berkeley) on their tale, will they ever save the princess?

PLOT: The plot of the story is average if not very original. But the acting, action, and humor makes “Shanghai Noon” to be a five-star great movie!

ACTING: Though most people may not believe it, this is my first Jackie Chan movie to watch. Throughout the whole movie he has this sort of wise yet innocent manner about it since he has no clue how to act in the west. Lucy Liu does not come out that much in the movie yet she has her moments. She’s so regal that she’s great for the part of the princess in captive. Brandon Merrill, a real-life rodeo champion, is very cool as another princess with lots of guts, getting Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson out of trouble. But I must say, Owen Wilson of Roy O’Bannon steals the whole film. He’s just so into his part that you can’t believe he’s only acting!

ACTION: As all Jackie Chan movies are, “Shanghai Noon” is action packed. Because it’s a movie how ‘East meets West’, it has both kung fu and gun fighting. Chan gets to use antlers, a horshoe whip, his pony-tail, and other ingenious weapons while the character of Roy gets to use his ’skills?’ as a gunfighter. Lots of great scenes but my favorites are: the bar fight scene, the two Roy O’Bannon versus the Marshall ’stand-offs’, and Jackie Chan versus Lo Fong.

HUMOR: The whole movie is filled with lots of one-liners you just naturally memorize and subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor. Most of the humor is given off to perfection by Owen Wilson though Jackie Chan has his moments. Here are a few of my favorite lines:

Roy O’Bannon: My name’s Roy O’Bannon.
Chon Wang: Chon Wang.
Roy O’Bannon: “John Wayne”? That’s a terrible cowboy name! That’s not going to work. And neither is the ponytail.

Roy O’Bannon: We’re men, not pinatas!

Roy O’Bannon: On the count of three. 1… 2… 2 1/2… 2 and 7/8… 3!

Roy O’Bannon: I may not know karate, but I know crazy.

And basically the whole movie is simply hilarious. There’s some bloopers at the end of th movie that is just funny! I especially love the one when Jackie Chan is ‘fixing’ Owen Wilson’s shoulder! The music is very cool also, not at all the normal ‘western type’ of music you would listen to in a typical western movie, but of course, “Shanghai Noon” is NOT a typical western movie. I highly recommend it for anyone how wants a good laugh and some great action/adventure.

PG-13 RATING: The movie is rated PG-13 because of language and some scenes. Best for older teenagers and adults.

Shanghai Noon is definitely one of my favorites from Jackie Chan. Although I love most of his movies, this one had a different style that made me laugh even louder. The wild west is just something he hadn’t incorporated in this movies yet…and finally he did! I’ll say it again and again, “I STILL can’t believe he does his own stunts! ” He is absolutely amazing! Especially in the scene when Jackie and the bandits are on the train and fighting and jumping from cart to cart. It’s exciting just watching Jackie take that leap (because you know it’s real…it’s not any special effects…not the blue screen dubbed background). My favorite scene was when Jackie was being chased by the native tribal dudes. The flying axes really get your attention! Your heart races as you watch Jackie execute each move with flawless conviction. I also enjoy and appreciate how this movie (among other Jackie Chan/Chow Yun Fat/Jet Li flicks) is slowly bringing Chinese culture into the American mainstream. Just the use of mandarin in an American theater is a step up for the Asians. Lucy Liu and Owen Wilson also did a fine job. You’ll really enjoy the out-takes at the end of the film. (One of Jackie’s trademarks)

I thought this set was a great concept. It comes well packaged and each of the main books included covers one of the DVD pages. When I list the names below, the stories on the cover will be labled with an “*” …

I was disappointed by the organization. Yes. The stories artre all clearly listed on the box in alphabetical order, but they’re hard to find on the DVDs because they’re not organized in any particular way per DVD set.

For example. I LOVE Courduroy. They probably could have included the live action movie along with the two cartoon versions that more closely resemble the books. Instead.. they put a book called “Yo! Yes?” on the DVD… That starts out with two kids throwing a ball back and forth saying and one saying “You? … …. …. ” pointing to himself and tossing the ball and the other one responding “You? … … ….” …… hmmmm… not so educational. Not so interesting. Kind of a waste of space on the DVD. This particular DVD also has “Here Comes the Cat!” — which I had never heard of.

While skimming the DVDS, I thought I was getting jipped. 3-4 stories on each of the 16 DVDs doesn’t really come up to 100. Thats when I noticed they were counting sories they put in the DVD features as a special. I thought the features area was supposed to be for author comentaries… actual extras.. ?? Then.. The best part of this is that you actually only get 90 stories. 10 are also available in Spanish. If you’re not learning spanish.. Given that most DVDs currently come in English and Spanish— This was a little disappointing. AND misleading. I think that’s why I couldn’t find a list of stories included ANYWHERE.

The “read along” is really just captions. You can turn them on yourself.

You can’t skip their advertisement for the DVD set you already own. You can fast forward… but strangly, you are then able to forward past the main menu and end up watching something aweful.

That being said.. there are a few good ones on here. I haven’t really decided if it was worth buying as a set or if I should have purchased each one individually. I spent $50. I’m seeing some of the individuals selling used for as low as $1. (I don’t think I’d spend much more than $3 on each one as an individual). Resale value is low….

Key to my list:

Here’s the list (And again.. astericks mark the ones that are on the cover). (Sp) means that it is also in Spanish. I have gone ahead and numbered them Sp-10 accordingly. “Bonus” means the story is located in the special features section as a bonus story, rather than on the main menu. … I only included such detailed info on 8 of 16 DVDs. However, all of the titles are listed.

As a Reading Specialist and grandmother, I enthusiastically endorse the Scholastic Treasure of 100 Storybook Classics. First of all, they selected excellent books for children. Secondly, they utilized the illustration style of the originals, so the aesthetics of the books are clearly presented and preserved. Thirdly, the animation is well-done though not overdone. The pacing is slow, as when a book is read aloud. This gives the listener a chance to absorb the story, just as he or she would if the story were being read aloud. It even has the option to include the text on each page, if you have a blossoming reader. In fact, this is just about the equivalent of having someone read aloud great picture books for your child, while you do — whatever.

This is a motion picture I could watch over again and again, if only to see the terrific collection of Western film icons. An early scene features Ty Sackett (Jeff Osterhage) trying to sign on with a cattle drive. Around the campfire sit the owner of the cattle (L.Q. Jones), the foreman (Glenn Ford), and the top hand (Ben Johnson). Right then the viewer knows that he’s in for first-rate entertainment.

The story line is split between Tell Sackett (Sam Elliott) trying to steer clear of three brothers (Jack Elam, Gene Evans, and Slim Pickens) out to revenge Tell’s killing of their card shark brother, and Orrin and Ty Sackett (Tom Selleck and Osterhage) doing their best to bring law and order to Sante Fe despite the diabolical dealings of the town’s richest man (the always oily John Vernon).

But the focal point of the picture is the underrated Glenn Ford as the mysterious Tom Sunday — one time attorney, marshal, and even murderer. He begins the film as a mentor to Orrin and Ty, but eventually time and fate pit the three against each other.

Don’t get me wrong, “The Sacketts” is not in the league of “The Wild Bunch,” “High Noon,” or “Ride the High Country,” but I can’t think of a much better way to spend three hours of my time.

Except for maybe doing a little riding on my old Buckskin on a cool, clear Saturday morning.

The Sacketts was one of the first instances of Hollywood getting the Western look on a scale bigger than episodic television series. Before Lonseome Dove and its sequels, this miniseries combines a great story and and an awesome cast to maximum effect.

Tom Selleck, Sam Elliott, and Jeff Osterhage play three brothers whose family becomes embroiled in a good old-fashioned Tennessee feud, causing the oldest brother to head out west. The younger brothers follow later, and all three get involved in gunplay with old enemies, and even old friends.

Selleck, Elliott and Osterhage make great Sacketts, and the supporting cast, including Ben Johnson, Glenn Ford, Jack Elam, Gene Evans, Paul Koslo, and others are terrfic. When TV had stopped making western television series, and the genre had just about dried up even on the big screen save the occasional Eastwood Western, The Sacketts were a welcome return to a sadly neglected genre. And the film still is a welcome return, especially now on DVD.

Donna has had enough of the Golden State. She misses Eric, who, although she doesn’t know it, is headed West - despite his parents’ objections - to declare his love and bring her home. Kelso, however, has decided he has found the woman of his dreams in Annette, who is beautiful and believes in him. Back in Wisconsin, Jackie is a changed woman, thanks to a change in boyfriends.

107. I Can’t Quit You Baby (a.k.a. Jackie and Hyde Get Busted)

9/24/2002

As punishment for Donna going away to California, Bob transfers her to a Catholic School, which means that Donna won’t get to see Eric as much. Eric is determined to fight for their right to be together, until he sees Donna in her new school uniform. Jackie and Hyde get caught making out in the basement; Eric and Donna try to convince them to tell Kelso what’s going on.

108. What Is and What Should Never Be (Part 1 of 2) (a.k.a. Kitty’s Pregnant)

10/29/2002

Kitty joyfully announces that she’s pregnant, but the reaction that she gets from Red leaves a lot to be desired. Eric and Donna continue their campaign to get Jackie and Hyde to tell the truth about their relationship to Kelso. A trip to the DMV seems to present the perfect opportunity, but Fez is the one who seizes the day rather than Hyde.

109. Heartbreaker (Part 2 of 2) (a.k.a. Kitty’s Parents Come to Visit) 10/29/2002

Kitty’s parents arrive from Arizona, after being told that Kitty has some wonderful news to share with them. Kitty’s news isn’t what she thought it would be, and throws a damper on the high spirits. Donna learns a thing or two from Bea about getting people to do things, while Eric and Red learn a thing or two from the World Book about “lady problems.” Kelso works out his feelings about Jackie and Hyde’s relationship.

110. Ramble On (a.k.a. Promise Ring Redux)

11/12/2002

In a romantic moment, Donna presents Eric with a ring, much like the promise ring that he gave her, and caused their break up. For Donna, the ring symbolizes their enduring love and committment; for Eric, it symbolizes ugliness. To protect Donna’s feelings, he decides not to say anything, but the secret gains a life of its own. Kitty is determined not to let menopause affect her life, but has a hard time living up to her committment.

111. Over the Hills and Far Away

11/19/2002

The kids prepare to make a weekend college visit to the University of Wisconsin. There’s only one snag in the plan: Donna tells Eric that Bob will not let her go to UW. Instead he wants her to visit Marquette, a small Catholic college. So Donna and Jackie visit Marquette, where Jackie spends her time worrying about Hyde; the guys go to UW with Red and a very irritable Kitty.

112. Hot Dog (a.k.a. The Gifts)

11/26/2002

When Eric decides to buy Donna a meaningful gift, he ends up getting her an engagement ring. But after discussing it with the guys, he realizes they are too young and the ring was a bad idea. Unfortunately, Eric already told Donna he got her a surprise and on their special evening out, he’s put on the spot and forced to make the biggest decision of his life. Meanwhile, in an attempt to lift menopausal Kitty’s spirits, Red gets her a dog: Schotzy.

113. Thank You

12/3/2002

Eric hides the fact that he’s failing math from Red because he wants to prove that he’s starting to get serious about his future. Red is so impressed by his son’s apparent maturity that he bumps Laurie from the adults’ table at Thanksgiving and gives her seat to Eric. This makes Eric think that the time may finally be right to announce to his engagement to Donna. However, the woman that Kelso brings as his date to the Formans’ dinner complicates this decision.

114. Black Dog (a.k.a. Ow, My Eye)

12/10/2002

When Jackie’s father is arrested for bribery, Kelso thinks she’ll come running back to him. But when Hyde and Kelso get into a brawl over Jackie, Kelso accidentally shoots Hyde with a BB gun and all hell breaks lose. Donna and Eric argue over how Hyde should deal with Jackie’s pain. Meanwhile, Fez realizes he has a crush on his boss at the DMV.

115. The Crunge (a.k.a. The S.A.T.s)

12/17/2002

The S.A.T. scores have come in and everyone does significantly better than Eric. He’s particularly upset by Donna’s high score and blames her for distracting him during the exam. As a result, Eric enlists Red to help him buckle down and stay away from Donna until he retakes the test. Meanwhile, Kelso discovers that he may have a bright future and Jackie pushes Hyde towards a college career.

116. The Girl I Love

1/7/2003

When Fez decides to introduce his new girlfriend, Nina, to the gang, Kitty offers to throw a dinner party for the event. The guys resent being dragged to a dinner party, while the girls are excited at the thought of a grown-up night.

117. Misty Mountain Hop (a.k.a. Jackie’s Cabin)

1/22/2003

Jackie recruits the Formans to help clean out her family’s mountain cabin, but decides it best not to ask for Hyde’s assistance, instead telling him she is attending a doll expo. With Jackie going away, Hyde seizes the opportunity to use Jackie’s cabin and invites Kelso and Fez. Donna and Eric get lost on the way to the cabin and spend the trip fighting. Hyde’s plan goes wrong when Kelso gets his hand, holding his stash, stuck in a vase just as Jackie and the Formans arrive.

118. Your Time Is Gonna Come (a.k.a. Get Off My Boyfriend) 1/29/2003

Annette, Kelso’s girlfriend from California, comes to Point Place to visit him. The entire gang is shocked to learn how closely her personality resembles Jackie’s, while Jackie tries to conceal her jealousy from Hyde. Meanwhile, Kitty’s parents show up unexpectedly and announce that they’ll be moving in for a while. This unpleasant situation gets far worse when Eric finds his grandfather collapsed in the driveway.

119. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You (a.k.a. Valentine’s Day)

2/5/2003

Hyde’s depressed that Jackie still seems to have feelings for Michael. Annette’s not happy either, because Kelso seems to still be attached to Jackie. And Kitty takes to her bed, because she feels her mother doesn’t love her.

120. When the Levee Breaks

2/12/2003

When Bob goes out of town, Eric and Donna decide to “practice” being married at her house. The gang is excited because they think this is a chance to party all weekend at the Pinciotti’s place, until Eric and Donna are forced to set them straight. Meanwhile, Kitty goes to the jewelers to pick up a ring she thinks Red got her as a surprise. But she discovers the real surprise: it’s actually an engagement ring for Donna.

121. Whole Lotta Love (a.k.a. The Silent Treatment)

2/19/2003

Red is angry that Donna and Eric are engaged, so he gives Eric the silent treatment, leaving it up to Donna to try to talk to him. Fez finally does it with Nina; he’s happy that he finally did it, but afterwards, things aren’t so great. Kelso gives Jackie a birthday present, but insists that he’s not trying to do anything; Hyde didn’t even know it was her birthday.

122. The Battle of Evermore (a.k.a. Pioneer Days)

2/26/2003

Things are still bad between Red and Eric, so Kitty signs them up for the Point Place Paul Bunyan Pioneer Days Jamboree. The estranged men must work together in order to beat Charlie and Mitch, an obnoxious father/son team who have won the past two years. Meanwhile, Hyde doesn’t understand why Leo hasn’t called him back to work in a while. He takes the gang to the Foto Hut only to find the place has been completely cleaned out.

123. Hey Hey What Can I Do (a.k.a. Job Fair)

3/12/2003

Everyone has their own reasons for going to the job fair. Eric needs a full-time job now that Red refuses to pay for college. The Photo Hut is closed, so Hyde’s looking for work too. Fez wants to make out with Nina at the DMV booth while “Hot Donna” will be signing autographs at the radio station’s booth. And after failing to flirt his way out of a parking ticket, Kelso fears that his good looks will fade and that he’ll need a practical job like other ‘uggos’.

124. Bring It On Home (a.k.a. Jackie’s in the House)

3/26/2003

The Formans discover that Jackie has been sleeping in Hyde’s room since neither of her parents are home. The best solution that everyone can come up with is for Jackie to move in with Bob and Donna, but unforunately Jackie doesn’t appreciate everyone’s pity. Meanwhile, Red gives Eric a hard time when he finds out that his son sleeps nude. And Fez has dinner at Nina’s house, where he learns that her parents don’t want her dating her “third world friend”.

125. No Quarter (a.k.a. Jackie Moves In)

4/2/2003

The Pinciottis learn very quickly that living with Jackie is going to be difficult. Kelso swipes Jackie’s panties to taunt Hyde, who has his revenge when Kelso gets a job at the hotel kitchen where Hyde works. Eric receives notice that he must return Donna’s engagement ring if he can’t make a payment by Friday. His visits to the jewelry store reveal that there’s bad blood between Fez and Fenton, the jewelry guy.

126. Trampled Under Foot (a.k.a. Fez Gets Dumped)

4/9/2003

Nina breaks up with Fez, although he doesn’t realize it until the gang sets him straight. It turns out that Nina thinks Fez is too needy. As for the others, they decide to rejuvenate their dull lives by finding another friend to hang out with. Kitty has one candidate in mind, but she has an ulterior motive.

127. You Shook Me (Part 1 of 2) (a.k.a. The Nurses Are Coming)

4/16/2003

Hyde turns down a hot nurse out of faithfulness to Jackie, then demands that Jackie not hang out alone with Kelso any more. The recent nurse convention at the hotel inspires Fez to have an erotic dream about a nurse…who turns out to be Kelso! Naturally, Kelso freaks out, and he turns to his ex for comfort. Meanwhile, Eric accepts a job at the dog food factory where Joanne works in order to earn enough money to marry Donna.

128. Nobody’s Fault But Mine (Part 2 of 2) (a.k.a. Hyde Loves Jackie)

4/23/2003

Hyde cheats on Jackie because he thinks she still loves Kelso. After realizing his mistake, he apologizes to her but she breaks up with him. Red and Kitty dare Eric and Donna to get married by graduation in order to pressure them into calling off their engagement. Their plan works, but a little better than they expected. Fez refuses to give Mitch Miller his driver’s license, so Mitch digs up dirt on him and Kelso. Laurie moves back home, determined to make up for her past wrongs.

129. The Immigrant Song (a.k.a. Fez Gets Busted)

5/7/2003

The Formans are horrified when they realize that Red has gone fishing - he only does that when he’s really angry. When he finally returns, Red has his final say on Eric and Donna’s decision to move. Meanwhile, Kelso, Hyde, and Fez decide to paint obscene pictures on the water tower as their senior prank. Hyde and Kelso’s arguing over Jackie lands Kelso in the hospital, leaving Fez to face the police alone and Jackie to face her feelings about who she wants to be with.

130. Celebration Day (a.k.a. Graduation)

5/14/2003

The gang will be split in half when high school graduation is over: Eric and Donna are all set to move into their Madison apartment, while poor Fez is about to be deported. The love triangle amongst the others grows more heated as Hyde and Kelso compete over an indecisive Jackie. But this tense situation is put aside so that the six friends can go camping together the night before graduation. Laurie tags along and dramatically changes Fez’s life. Back at the Forman house, Red gives Kitty medication to help her deal with her depression over Eric’s imminent departure.

Well look for the last 3 seasons to come out real soon. Take good care!

The season of Eric and Red. I have watched this series from the start and can say that I think this season has some of the best lines/ interaction between Eric and Red. You also have Kitty’s “lady parts problem” and Shotsy the dog, Hyde vs. Kelso over Jackie, and the brief but memorable relationship between Fez and Nina. As for the DVD’s, there is not much in the way of extras, but if you enjoy the show this is something to get.

Volume Two of Naruto is what, in my oppinion, made the show a masterpiece. The character deatil shown here is some of the most enthralling in any anime. This volume contains the end of the Zabuza arc and the start of the Chunin Exams arc. And let me say, what a way to end Naruto’s first arc. It had me in tears. One of the most touching scenes I’ve ever seen in an anime. If you liked Volume One, you’ll LOVE Volume Two… and believe me, you’ll be itching for more.

Naruto Uncut Boxed Set Volume 2 is one of the best DVD purchases I’ve made. The series teaches a lot of life lessons for children and adults and the substance of the program is much more than you would initially expect. It teaches one to never give in even when the odds are against you- a very good life lesson. Naruto is one of the best anime series’ ever created besides Dragon Ball Z which is my all time favorite. It has great character depth & quality, awesome animation and epic storylines, battles and dialogue. But this judgment cannot be reached by just veiwing these first two DVD sets. Watch the series for yourself and you will quickly become a beleiver…BELEIVE IT!!!Naruto Uncut Boxed Set, Volume 2

I thoroughly enjoy the 7th Heaven series. It has a lot of memory making episodes. Sometimes they make you cry, laugh, feel good and some of them really cause you think and review some of your ideals. It is a good Family program and one I’d higly reccomend.

This is a great family show that deals with all kinds of problems we all encounter in our everyday lives. If you believe and have faith that god has a plan for us all. I hate that they cancelled the show so I’m buying the box sets.

At first glance, especially the box and DVDs, it looks like some pervo anime. I was hoping to God when I bought it, that it wasn’t going to suck. To my surprise, I was jumping out of my seat on the first disc. This thing is action packed and awesome to watch. If you are a robot/fighting anime lover or just love anime period this is for you. The story line is excellent the visuals are awesome. You dont have to honestly understand the plot to get the point. This is one of those miracle animes that does exactly what the fans want and expect from it. It will even do some unexpected stuff and cause your jaw to drop. The girls may be a distraction at times, but never long enough for you to forget about the fighting and the robots. Its almost as if you could feel every hit or punch that was made when you watched. 5 out of 5 all the way man.

If you’re looking for something serious, go see “Evangeleon” or “Grave of FireFlies.” If you’re looking for something pointless, go see “Excel Saga.” If you want funny, charming, delightful, adventurous, romantic, melodramatic, and overall just a plain good time, pick up Godannar! An odd series about a guy named Goh. Poor Goh. He’s a robot pilot, pretty serious and determined, although he can get rather dramatic and sentimental when women are concerned. And a lot of women drop into his lap (and house): his wife, Anna, a 17 year old girl he saved five years ago and who has a mega-hero-worship thing (cannot figure out why Goh chose Anna, tho) who also becomes a robot pilot, although she hasn’t told her schoolmates she’s married; Mira, the old girlfriend who died but isn’t dead and who has come back rather “out of it”; Lu, the orphan that Goh takes under his wing as a ‘daughter’; another robot pilot who has a crush on him; his new wife’s busty mother (and his boss); and add a pregnant cat. Every episode seems to need at least one battle where Anna and Goh’s robots join together (in fact, every robot needs to do that…why not just create one robot that can do both?), a battle that only Goh and Anna can resolve. Goh can go over the top emotionally, but that’s funny, too. There are also a Lot Lot Lot of cleavage (but minimal nudity), sexually charged jokes and situations, and random funny stuff. Gotta watch this series.

In the first couple of episodes, we are quickly introduced to the plot concept–Minimic beasts ransacking the world–and the characters (as above).

It’s been over 20 years since the proposed Robotech sequel series, The Sentinels, was canned. Some of the other reviewers on this page have some misconceptions about this movie, it seems… First of all, Shadow Chronicles is most definitely intended for longtime fans AS WELL AS NEW ONES. The major reason that many of the older characters do not reappear in this story is that the producers of the film wanted to make it as accessible as possible to a general audience. To be sure, you’ll get the most out of it if you have a working understanding of past Robotech, and there are several nods here to the fanboys, but overall the story is general enough to be understood by the lay person. (While it is true that Harmony Gold has had difficulty utilizing the Macross character/mecha designs in the past and/or locating many of the old voice actors for this project, these are only two reasons for the absence of many of the original characters.) On to the review…

Being a longtime fan, I had mixed feelings about the prospects of The Shadow Chronicles, but I wanted to go into it as much as possible with an open mind. First, let me say that I liked the movie, and it was exciting to see something new in the Robotech universe (especially on the big screen!) after so long. I had fears that this movie wouldn’t feel like Robotech, but it actually did.

There’s no reason for us to expect a new project in this universe to feel like Robotech - afterall, the original series was assembled out of necessity at the time, based on existing products. There’s a great difference between adapting existing material to fit your needs and creating something new from scratch, and the only thing we’ve seen in Robotech before in this vein was the little bit of animation completed for the Sentinels… So above all else, I’m pleased to say that I think this new project lives up to the Robotech name.

The character animation overall is quite good. I enjoyed the new character designs (and was not bothered by Rick’s new look either). I did feel the new character animation was a bit more American-style and less anime-style (mostly with regard to the returning characters, strangely enough), but it is quality work nonetheless.

The movie works well as a sort of “pilot” to set up a series or more features, yet has a pretty decent story in and of itself. I think the new enemy has potential to make good villians, although I also see the possible pitfall of them becoming merely one-dimensional token bad guys - something Robotech has never had to worry about before. The cast of heroes seems promising, with enough variety yet familiarity for some interesting interactions and plot developments.

Now onto some of the negatives… First of all, I appreciate that the CGI is much easier and less expensive to put together than full old-school animation. With that in mind, I can accept that many of the backgrounds, ships, space stations, etc. have to be done CGI. If it means we can have more Robotech, I can live with it. However, the smaller hand-to-hand combat mecha are a bit of a different story. They simply don’t convey the excitement of the mecha in the original series, and their movements do not have any “weight” to them. During what should be intense moments of battle, I didn’t feel the excitement of the events taking place. To be fair, I did eventually get used to the CGI mecha as the feature progressed, but I highly recommend the use of traditional animation for the mecha in future installments, or at least working to make the movements of the CGI mecha more realistic and less blocky so they don’t distract from the story.

However, my biggest complaint with the movie is the recreating of several scenes from the original series. I see no problem with creating new scenes in the environment of the old series (specifically the last two episodes of ‘New Generation’). Indeed, that seems to be necessary in order to make this new production work. What I do have a problem with is recreating the old scenes in a way that makes them directly conflict with those of the original series. It would have been just as easy to create new scenes with the Invid characters Ariel and the Regis (i.e. events that could have occurred during the same timeframe as the original series, simply not shown on-screen), rather than changing the existing scenes to fit the arc of this new storyline. So I’m a bit baffled as to why they chose to do this, and hope they don’t “mess with the gospel” this much in future installments. That and the CGI are my major complaints with this project.

In conclusion, I thought the movie was a lot of fun, though with some technical and plot problems as mentioned above. I look forward to seeing more Robotech!

“The Shadow Chronicles” represents a strong effort by Frank Agrama and Tommy Yune to carry on the Robotech legacy. Since Robotech was such an extraordinary series, expectations for this film were very high. Many people who own the DVDs, comic books, and Jack McKinney novels consider Robotech to be one of their favorite shows, if not their favorite show, of all time. Given that the fans are so loyal, dedicated, and passionate, it is understandable that some of them would be disappointed if this film didn’t turn out to be as spectacular as the series. But “The Shadow Chronicles” is a step in the right direction.

The outstanding characters and plot-twists made Robotech extraordinarily compelling during the 1980s. Watching the characters change and evolve as the series unfolded is what set Robotech apart from just about every other animated series (or any television series, period) at the time. In fact, very few science fiction shows since have offered the audience anywhere near the breadth and depth of the human experience as Robotech. Throw in the path-breaking themes lying just beneath the surface like bi-racial relationships, a positive view of women in the military, and a meaningful role for the United Nations in bringing people together, and the show had all of the elements necessary to remind viewers of the adversity they face in their daily lives and what it takes to be successful in this world.

This film is an effort to distill those elements into a brief, 88 minute thumbnail. On the first viewing, “The Shadow Chronicles,” its characters, and dialogue seem to fall flat. In fact, many hardcore fans may have visions of “The Phantom Menace” while watching it for the first time. However, with subsequent viewings, it becomes apparent that Ariel’s evolution as a person (err, Invid) is the film’s central message. Her transformation from the timid and delirious alien into the moral compass of the REF effectively captures the spirit that made the series so extraordinary to watch.

Many viewers won’t notice this during their initial viewing because the film has a lot of material crammed into such a short time slot. There are a lot of things going on, and it can be difficult to determine where the various characters are (Earth orbit, the deep space base, or near the SDF-3) during any given scene. Combine this with the radical departure from the vision of the Haydonites set out during “The Sentinels,” and the film can be downright confusing for hardcore fans to follow the first time around.

However, as full-length feature DVDs become the future of Robotech, “The Shadow Chronicles” is a step in the right direction. At its core, the film keeps the most important elements of the Robotech legacy intact. Viewers may complain about the appearance of the characters, video-game-like battle animation, the music, or the absence of some key characters from the series, but these issues are trivial in the long run. The departure from the story line of “The Sentinels,” is a larger problem since the consistency among the series, comic books, novels, and role-playing game was such an important part of what made Robotech successful. But this problem, too, can be overcome in time.

Is “The Shadow Chronicles” a good film? Clearly. Is it a great film? That’s debatable. But it is obvious from watching it that Agrama and Yune have a great film in them. Robotech is very much alive, and fans should look forward to what Harmony Gold has to offer in the future.
