Health bill misses mark with focus on insurance

January 25th, 2010 by katejones

Source: Seacoastonline.com (Original Article)

Jan. 21 — To the Editor:

Here is a rather rambling letter, as there are many topics on my mind.

First, on Monday, Dr. James Feiseher correctly pointed out that the now imperiled health care bill is really insurance reform, and does little to improve health, and that here in the U.S. we spend more money for less results than anywhere else.

If we want to impact the health of Americans, we should be looking at the food service and agribusiness industries, not the medical establishment, which does an admirable job trying to keep pace with the damage inflicted upon us by Monsanto, ADM and McDonald’s. A couple examples: If we keep eating cows fed corn rather than grass, kept alive with growth hormones and antibiotics, of course we will all get fat and sick. If we keep growing round-up-ready corn and dumping unlimited herbicides and factory fertilizer on our land, and substituting that for real food, of course we all get fat, sick and allergic. Duh!

Regarding the LLCs, according to Thursday’s paper it’s the interest and dividends tax, not the business profits tax that has been extended to them. Thus it is not a classic income tax, but an income tax on passive incomes. Still it begs the question why this tax is applied to one sector of the community and not the other. I hope the Herald will do a better job explaining because I’m confused. True, the state of New Hampshire needs income to meet its obligations. The question is one of fairness.

Regarding gay marriage, speaking for myself I was against the state taking a position of endorsing it, but I would be equally appalled at the prospect of the state taking a position against it, as those in the movement to repeal have on their agenda. The state has an obligation to protect inheritance rights, survivorship rights and such, but has no business taking a moral or ethical stand in either direction. Leave that to the church and cheap flights from Devonport to Gold Coast definitions to the dictionary.

New lead regulations may raise home remodeling costs

January 19th, 2010 by katejones

Source: Kansas.com (Original Article)

The price of remodeling homes is about to go up — way up, some contractors say — because of new regulations aimed at protecting homeowners from lead-based paint.

“This is absolutely the biggest change” to hit the remodeling industry in decades, said Tim Shigley, president of Shigley Construction in Wichita.

“It has a lot of legitimate contractors really worried. … And our clients have no idea it’s coming.”

Beginning in April, federal law will require contractors who work in homes, child-care facilities or schools built before 1978 to be specially trained and certified and to follow more stringent work practices to prevent lead contamination.

Environmental officials say the new rules will more effectively prevent children from swallowing or inhaling toxic lead and protect contractors from costly litigation.

“We’re doing it to protect everybody, but especially children,” said Tom Langer, program manager with the Kansas Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Prevention Program at the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

“Lead hasn’t gone away. It’s there in the paint and hidden in the surface coatings, and that’s still … a health issue.”

Although lead-based paint was outlawed in 1978, the risk of lead poisoning in children remains a health concern. Children who ingest lead-based paint can develop seizures, learning disabilities, behavior problems and intestinal ailments.

Several Wichita-area contractors said they agree with the goal of the new regulations. But they say additional fees, training and equipment will no doubt drive up their costs.

“The effect that this is going to have is just crippling,” said Chad Bryan, general manager of Southwestern Remodeling. He estimates his company’s cost per job will increase 8 to 10 percent.

“As lean as companies are running just to survive, it would be virtually impossible for us to incur those costs. So they’re cheap flights from Adelaide to Hobart going to be transferred to the homeowner.”

More business travelers try to do trips in one day

January 10th, 2010 by katejones

Source: USA Today (Original Article)

Last year, Bill Hall clocked 100,000 miles traveling for business.

But on at least half those trips, Hall never landed in a hotel bed. Instead, he flew round trip from his hometown of Dallas to Orlando or Los Angeles and was back home in time for dinner.

“It cuts travel expenses,” explains Hall, 62, a vice president at a telecommunications company. The speedy trips made his family happier as well. “I was home at night. … They are of the opinion they’d rather have me come home late at night than not come home at all.”

Hall and some other business travelers are adding a whole new endurance test to the notion of “road warrior.” At a time when many companies have slashed budgets and require corporate trips to be as efficient and inexpensive as possible, more business travelers are returning from trips the same day they go rather than spending several nights — and hundreds of extra dollars — on the road.

Often the trips entail shorter flights of three hours are less. But some business travelers are trekking from coast to coast or even overseas and back without an overnight stay, says Carol Ann Salcito, president of the business travel consulting firm Management Alternatives.

“More and more people are doing that now,” Salcito says of the rapid turnarounds. “And, of course, the economy has lent itself to making that even more of a necessity.”

Salcito speaks from experience. Based in Connecticut, Salcito once flew to Asia and back without staying overnight. And she’s done the same on trips to Texas and California. It’s not just the recession driving the trend, she says. Many travelers also have a desire to be home as much as possible during these uncertain times.

Being in their ‘own beds’

“It’s not just the economy, it’s a secure feeling of being home,” says Salcito, who believes that more people began taking one-day business trips after the terrorist attacks of flights from Devonport to Brisbane Sept. 11, when planes were temporarily grounded …continue reading
