The third season of KING OF THE HILL is perhaps its best, with the writing at its peak and with as varied and well-defined a group of characters as you’ll find on any sitcom. Here’s a brief rundown of the 25 episodes in this set:

1. “Death of a Propane Salesman” — The long-awaited conclusion to the cliffhanger that ended season two. A darkly funny opening to a great season, finding humor in the question of how we deal with death and fear of dying.

2. “And They Call It Bobby Love” — Bobby (Pamela Segall) falls in love with a girl (Sarah Michelle Gellar) who’s two years older than him. This episode won KotH the Emmy for outstanding animated series.

3. “Peggy’s Headache” — Peggy (Kathy Najimy) finally realizes that Dale’s wife Nancy (Ashley Gardner) is having an affair with her Native American “healer,” John Redcorn (Jonathan Joss). Another episode that takes a tough subject, adultery, and makes it funny.

4. “Pregnant Paws” — Hank (Mike Judge) tries to find a breeding partner for his dog Ladybird, which makes Peggy jealous, as she’s the one who really wants another baby.

5. “Next of Shin” — To add to Hank’s frustration over not being able to have another child, his father Cotton (Toby Huss) reveals that he’s going to become a father again. As you can see, this season of King of the Hill is one of the few seasons of an animated series that incorporates some continuing story arcs; the story points introduced in this episode will continue in other episodes and come to a head in the season finale.

6. “Peggy’s Pageant Fever” — Peggy enters a beauty pageant and becomes insecure both about her looks and her accomplishments. Contains some of the show’s best moments, especially a hilarious throwaway scene where Bill (Stephen Root) sings “Takin’ Care of Business.” Guest stars include Carol Alt and Kathy Ireland.

7. “Nine Pretty Darn Angry Men” — Hank, his friends and his father sit on a focus group, and Hank is the only one who objects to the company’s plans to redesign its product. Guest-stars, Billy Bob Thornton and Dwight Yoakam.

8. “Good Hill Hunting” — Hank wants to take Bobby on his first hunting trip, but is unable to get a hunting license. Like the gun episode from the second season, this episode both satirizes Texas culture and takes it as a given; and it’s not so much about guns as about a father-son relationship and the significance we attach to coming-of-age rituals.

9. “Pretty, Pretty Dresses” — The strangest Christmas episode ever: Hank’s lonely divorced friend Bill tries to kill himself, and then decides that if he can’t get his wife back, he will become her by wearing her old clothes. It sounds depressing, but it’s actually one of the funniest episodes of the season — with a genuinely touching ending capped by a great closing gag. What makes King of the Hill so good is its ability to be realistic and bizarre and affecting all at once, and this is one of the best episodes.

10. “A Firefighting We Will Go” — Hank and his friends become volunteer firefighters. An unabashed slapstick episode, full of Three Stooges references, crazy physical gags, and funny lines. One of the funniest episodes of the season demonstrates that KotH can do a “wacky” episode as well as anybody.

11. “To Spank With Love” — Peggy gets in trouble for spanking a student, but then becomes a hero as “Paddlin’ Peggy,” and starts to use her reputation to scare her students.

12. “Three Coaches and a Bobby” — When Hank gets his tough old coach to run Bobby’s football team, Bobby decides he’d rather play on the more fun, less regimented soccer team. Includes Hank’s infamous description of soccer: “Soccer was invented by European ladies to keep them busy while their husbands did the cooking.” Guest star: Will Ferrell.

13. “De-Kahnstructing Henry” — Hank’s overachieving neighbor Kahn (Toby Huss) tries to make Hank jealous of his great new job — but in the process, he gives away government secrets and gets fired.

14. “The Wedding of Bobby Hill” — Bobby and his cousin Luanne (Brittany Murphy) compete for the attention of a concert promoter and self-proclaimed genius, Rad (Matthew McConaughey). When things get out of hand, Hank and Peggy teach Bobby a lesson by convincing him that he got Luanne pregnant and has to marry her.

15. “Sleight of Hank” — After seeing a magic show, Bobby incorporates the tricks and patter into his Sunday School report on Jesus. Besides this hilarious scene (”I am The Amazing Jesus!”) the episode is a character study of the differences between Hank and Peggy.

16. “Return to La Grunta” — The story of Hank almost getting sexually assaulted by a dolphin is combined with a parallel subplot about Luanne getting sexually harassed at work. One of the show’s most famous and unique episodes. Guest star: Billy West.

17. “Escape From Party Island” — Hank takes his mother and her friends to a miniatures museum in Port Aransas, and winds up caught in the middle of MTV’s Spring Break. Guest stars: Pauly Shore, Phyllis Diller, Uta Hagen, Betty White.

18. “Love Hurts and So Does Art” — Nervous about the idea of going to a dance with Connie (Lauren Tom), Bobby starts overeating and develops gout.

19. “Hank’s Cowboy Movie” — Hank tries to get the Dallas Cowboys to move their training camp to Arlen by making a promotional video for the town. Everything goes farcically wrong, of course, but the episode has a surprisingly touching undercurrent about Hank’s fear that Bobby will leave Arlen when he grows up.

20. “Dog Dale Afternoon” — Dale (Johnny Hardwick) is driven round the bend when his friends steal his new lawn mower as a prank.

21. “Revenge of the Lutefisk” — The new female minister (Mary Tyler Moore) serves a midwestern fish dish, which somehow indirectly leads to Bobby accidentally burning down the church.

22. “Death and Texas” — Peggy goes to visit a death row convict, and unwittingly winds up smuggling cocaine in to him.

23. “Wings of the Dope” — Luanne thinks that her boyfriend Buckley (David Herman) has come back as an angel. Contains the famous use of the song “Life in a Northern Town” by Dream Academy.

24. “Take Me Out of the Ball Game” — Peggy becomes the star pitcher for Hank’s softball team, but Hank’s over-managing causes her to lose her touch.

25. “As Old as the Hills” — In the season finale, Hank and Peggy mark their twentieth wedding anniversary by lamenting their lost dreams, and they decide to do something crazy. This episode ties up the themes that have run through the season (such as Peggy’s frustration and Cotton’s new baby) into another funny, touching and well-constructed story.

I’m a big fan of Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ KING OF THE HILL — I think it’s by far the best of the post-SIMPSONS animated sitcoms — but the third season, finally due for release on DVD, may be the best of the series; it was the season that won a well-deserved Emmy for best animated series. The writing was exceptionally strong in this season, with hardly a weak episode among the 25 episodes. And the writers came up with some unusual and offbeat stories to tell about Texas propane salesman Hank Hill and his friends and family. Some of the most memorable episodes include:

- Hank goes for a “swim with a dolphin” encounter at a fancy resort hotel, and the dolphin tries to sexually assault Hank.

- Hank and Peggy, to teach Bobby a lesson, convince him that he’s gotten his cousin Luanne pregnant and that he has to marry her. This episode features a hilarious guest voice appearance from Matthew McConaughey as a pretentious concert promoter named “Rad.”

- Hank and his friends become volunteer firefighters, and wind up destroying everything in sight. This episode, one of the funniest in the series’ run, proved that KING OF THE HILL, though usually praised for “subtle” humor, could do a wacky slapstick episode as well as or better than any other show.

- In a Christmas episode, Bill Dauterive is so lonely that he becomes suicidal, and then starts to dress up as his ex-wife. Somehow the writers managed to make this episode, which could have been depressing, into an offbeat, funny, and finally even touching story.

- After seeing a magician’s show, Bobby uses the tricks and patter to liven up his Sunday School report on Jesus, presenting himself as “The Amazing Jesus” and saying “Now, for my next miracle, I’ll need a large wooden cross and a couple of volunteers.”

There are many other memorable episodes, including Luanne’s encounter with an Angel; the episode where Bobby falls in love with an older girl voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar (this was the Emmy-winning episode); and the episode where Peggy enters a beauty pageant (featuring Stephen Root’s hilarious rendition of “Takin’ Care of Business”). Because the episodes are so well-structured — with many of the stories organized around themes, and with A and B stories often intersecting — and because the characters were at their most fully developed and interesting by this season, the episodes are just as enjoyable on repeat viewing as they are on a first viewing.

Writers for season 3 included Richard Appel and Jon Vitti (veterans of The Simpsons), David Zuckerman (developer and showrunner of Family Guy), Norm Hiscock (head writer for Kids in the Hall), and Joe Stillman (screenwriter of the Shrek movies). But ultimately the show is true to Mike Judge’s style and sense of humor: instead of trying to be strange for its own sake, or make pointless pop-culture jokes, Judge’s stuff takes everyday life and shows how strange it is. If you liked Judge’s movie Office Space, you’ll like King of the Hill.

No announcement yet of what extras there will be on the set, but it is worth picking up for the episodes alone, and the price is certainly right for a great season of 25 episodes.

Ahhh, the classic post-apocolyptic thriller that sets the standard for post-apocolyptic thrillers. One tagline reads ‘In the future, cities will become deserts, roads will become battlefields and the hope of mankind will appear as a stranger’. I remember skipping school in the early 80’s to stay home and watch this one on cable, Such a great movie that has lost none of it’s appeal even after 20 plus years. This is the story of a man, once an officer of the law, who now roams the highways of post-apocolyptic Australia searching for gasoline and maybe a reason to exist. In this time, gasoline is the most valuable commodity, so much so men kill for it. Mel Gibson plays Max, in the role that made him known worldwide. During his travels, he comes across a small settlement that is actually producing petroleum. This settlement is besieged by a group of motorized, murdering, mauraders who want all the fuel. Knowing that the fuel is life, the people in the settlement defend the fuel, but their strength and ability to hold out against this powerful force is becoming less and less each day. Max strikes a deal with them for all the fuel he can carry provided he can get a truck for them so they can haul their tanker of gas out of the wasteland and find a better life in a fabled coastal land. Max fufills his end of the bargin, and leaves the settlement with his fuel, but is attacked and left for dead. Having lost his car, he decides to drive the tanker. This sets up one of the most amazing highway battles ever filmed, as the settlers have turned the tanker into a moving fortess, and the marauders will stop at nothing to stop the tanker and get the gas. This movie is what I would call a nearly pefect example of excellent casting, story, dialogue, plot, script, wardrobe, etc. to make up a near perfect movie. Everything in the movie works so well that your entire attention is focused on the screen, even after multiple viewings. This is actually the second in a trilogy, Mad Max being the first and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome being the third, but, in my opinion, this one is the best. It’s raw, gritty, sometimes humourous and competely enthralling. On a side note, what’s up with Warner Brothers and their crummy cardboard packaging? It just seems so flimsy and cheap. And don’t look for a lot of extras with this release, just the full and widescreen versions and some production notes.

This just in…I heard George Miller and Mel Gibson are bringing Max back one more time in 2004 in Mad Max: Fury Road……

This movie, the second in the Mad Max trilogy, is easily the best of the three. Visually, it’s very distinctive. The first movie showed a society breaking down in the post apocalyptic world. By this movie, it’s broken down. The first movie showed the immediate aftermath. There were still working phones, power lines, people trying to go on with their normal lives, etc. There was even a police force, of which Max was a member, trying to maintain order. Now, society has descended into complete anarchy. Civilization’s infrastructure has broken down completely. In the first movie you saw shops, service stations, hospitals. Now you see people scavenging in a wrecked world. Max’s car is no longer a gleaming black vehicle, but a delapidated, dirty old beater, its engine still in top shape, but its interior stripped, and its body covered in dust, battered and old. Max’s leather police uniform is no longer immaculate, but torn and patched. Visually, this movie set a new standard, and like “Star Wars” and “Blade Runner”, changed the way movies in its genre were made. Even the setting works in telling the story. Where the first film featured country with trees and green grass, this movie is set in a blasted desert, further accentuating the sense of collapse.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Road Warrior! Click Here

And this movie’s quality doesn’t end with the visuals. It has a great, exciting story, very reminiscent of the pulp adventures of old. It’s hero, a wanderer, a uniquely skilled and deadly loner, is a mythic archetype. The actors are all perfectly cast. Mel Gibson, with only a few lines of dialogue, turns in a compelling, emotional performance, showing the transformation from the happy, loving husband and father of the first film, to the wounded, burnt out shell of a man seen here. In this film, Max is a tough, fang-scarred old wolf, who has absolutely nothing to live for, but whose survival instinct, combined with his toughness and resourcefulness, just won’t let him quit.

The other characters in this movie are also unique and memorable. Bruce Spence’s gyro captain is a likeable opportunist. Mike Preston’s Papagallo is the determined, idealistic leader, in over his head, but trying his best. Vernon Wells makes a great, flamboyant villain. And Kjell Nilsson is the Humungus, whose face we never see; leader of a vicious band of trash, whose hulking physique, and savage followers seem at odds with his articulate speech, and ostensibly conciliatory manner. The story and characters elevate this movie over the host of low budget imitators that followed. But the film is not short on action either. And George Miller was a gifted director who put to film what remain the best car chase scenes ever shot, right down to this day. Action lovers will find plenty of excitement with this movie. It’s a terrible shame the third film wasn’t very good, as it killed the prospects of a long running series. This is sad because Max, wandering lone wolf that he is, is a character who, like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, or the Conan of the old pulp magazines is eminently suitable to a series of adventures.

The ending of the “Stargate SG-1″ TV show left some threads dangling — the last Goa’uld System Lord was still in hiding, and the Ori were still threatening the world.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stargate: The Ark of Truth/Stargate: Continuum! Click Here

Fortunately those threads are more or less tied up in the two direct-to-DVD movies that followed: “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” and “Stargate: Continuum.” While they don’t quite have the unique flavour of the TV series, these movies do bring back all the favorite characters (and some departed villains) in a double finale to its winding stories.

“The Ark of Truth” is an Ancient device that brainwashes people — and SG-1 is searching for it, where they run into Vala’s ex-hubby Tomin (who ends up teaming up with them). But soon they have a lead on where the Ark might be, and head for Celestis in the hopes of finding a bloodless method of stopping the Ori once and for all.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Stargate: The Ark of Truth/Stargate: Continuum! Click Here

Unfortunately they have a slew of new problems — Ori motherships are approaching Earth with the intent to convert or destroy, a nasty IOA rep has created and loosed a very familiar enemy on the Odyssey, and Vala’s malevolent daughter Adria has gained godlike power. Fortunately SG-1 has a powerful ally of their own.

And once again, there is time-twisting with “Continuum.” SG-1 and General Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) are watching the execution and extraction of Ba’al… but unfortunately, it’s not the real Ba’al. The real Ba’al has time-traveled and altered the timeline, causing Teal’c (Christopher Judge), Vala (Claudia Black) and the Tok’ra to vanish, and resulting in Jack’s death.

Unfortunately, this alternate timeline becomes more perilous after a year — Earth is being threatened by the supreme System Lord Ba’al, his queen Qetesh (in Vala’s body) and his First Prime Teal’c. But when Qetesh and Ba’al clash over his past on Earth, the altered SG-1 must band together to find and destroy Ba’al’s time machine, and somehow restore the timeline to what it once was.

“Stargate: The Ark of Truth” and “Stargate: Continuum” are basically intended to wrap up loose ends, and as such they’re not quite as satisfying as the television show was. “Ark of Truth” sometimes feels rather rushed and has a somewhat out-of-the-blue solition, and “Continuum” may need multiple viewings to keep up with the time-bouncing plotline.

But as finales they’re solid pieces of work — lots of action, space battles, mysterious artifacts, and a way bigger budget that a TV episode would ever have allowed. And they both have everything that you’d expect from “Stargate SG-1″ — pop culture homages (”Star Wars”!), some recurring characters (Apophis!), and alien nasties with overwhelming power. There’s even some subtle moral dilemmas about belief and fighting the Ori followers.

It also has excellent scripting: plot threads drawn from the TV series, witty dialogue (”That is, after all, why we’ve come. Why we had to endure all of that singing. Get rid of the last bad guy and then there’s cake”), and some nice quiet moments, such as Teal’c talking with Tomin about their bloodstained pasts. And they manage to throw some interesting twists at the audience, such as a shocking revelation about the Ori.

And seeing the actors as their SG-1 characters is like putting on a comfortable old shoe. Amanda Tapping and Michael Shanks are suitably brilliant and courageous, and Ben Browder gets to shine especially in “Continuum” as a strong, slightly quirky soldier. Christopher Judge gets to shine in “Ark of Truth” as a powerful, wise warrior, and Black gets to be both funny and emotional.

And of course, Richard Dean Anderson utterly steals the show whenever he appears (”Hey, have you ever tried to find a bathroom in a pyramid?”) and Tim Guinee has a good smallish role as Tomin.

It’s a little sad to see the main storylines of the Stargate universe end, but “Stargate: The Ark of Truth” and “Stargate: Continuum” are well worth seeing. Nice finales.

I’ll be the first to admit I wasn’t looking forward to the straight to dvd stargate movies. While I enjoyed the show, I wasn’t expecting much from them. But it turned out Stargate prospered with the bigger budget! The first, ark of truth is the conclusion to the ori story. Though it started slow, it really picked up, and turned into a monstrously entertaining movie. Though I wish it could have been a few episodes (or instead a full season), what they did was very good, and a good conclusion to the Ori story.

As to Continuum, I was suprised with how much fun it was. Given the time travel nature of the story, I thought the fact that the show brought back feelings from so many seasons was a great effect. They also brought back old characters, including Goul’d Lords, who I haven’t seen in years. Though the story was full of holes (like most time travel pieces) it was very interesting. For those wondering the difference between this and the seperate releases, there are none. They just put the discs in one new case, so if you have them both, you don’t need to buy it again.

OK folks, there are very few DVD/Movies I can wholeheartedly recommend for the entire family, but Calamity Jane is one of them! Made in 1953, when Doris Day was in her early 20’s, Calamity Jane made Doris a musical and theatre star. No question about it, Doris Day carries this movie on her slim feminine shoulders. She absolutely shines as Calamity Jane, the ultimate western tomboy cowgirl. Doris excels in singing (the songs are positively addicting and you will be humming them for days to come), dancing (wow, can she dance!), shooting (well, she pretends to shoot), and acting (comedy and drama) her way through this rolicking enjoyable film. Doris Day is just a treat to watch and the kids will fall in love with her. Day is so talented in so many different ways, and this film is a perfect vehicle to showcase her talents. Doris definitely deserves an A+ for her performance.

The supporting cast is terrific as well, with Howard keel as the baritone singing Wild Bill Hickok, and Allyn Ann McLerie as Katie Brown, Calamity’s girlfriend and rival for the romantic attentions of US Cavalry’s Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin.

The plot is simple, fun, and entertaining; the whole family will enjoy this one from 2 year old Terrible Too to 102 year old grandma! There is nothing deep here for your mind to think about, no, this is a movie to just sit back and enjoy, and enjoy it you will.

Highly recommended!

Jim “Konedog” Koenig

Doris Day one of Hollywoods greatest talents now comes to the DVD TECHNICOLOR screen as Martha Jane Canary, better known as “Calamity Jane”. Loosely based on the western heroine’s life. Calamity served as an Indian Scout, mail carrier and later as a performer in a Wild West Show demonstrating her fancy shooting. This action packed, toe tapping, knee slapping musical launched Doris Day as a Hollywood Star!!! She is outstanding as this wild tomboyish gun toting character.

Summary: Calamity Jane (Day) & best friend Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel) are always competing against each other for the towns best shot and biggest story teller. Both are in love with other interests who are in love. Nothing can change this and Jane’s “Secret Love” (Oscar winning song - Day’s biggest single hit selling over 1 million copies) is soon realized. The movie is filled with great music and a very predictable happy ending. A 1950’s Hollywood stantard.

This OUTSTANDING DVD is presented in Full Standard Screen Format (before WideScreen) in beautiful Digitalized TECHNICOLOR & mono sound track. The Extra features include: Premiere & Awards Newsreels, Producion Notes & Theatrical Trailer.

Doris Day is delightful & very believable as Calamity Jane. This Warner Brothers Musical is a classic & a great family edition to the DVD library. You’ll love the music too!! Enjoy.

Hi all…

I just wanted to share my opinion on the DVD release ‘Michael Jackson: A Remarkable Life’…

-running time: 01:08:23 (Europe version, I don’t know about the US version)
-warning: The DVD doesn’t contain music or performances by Michael Jackson.

However, I have to say that this documentary is probably the most positive I’ve ever seen about Michael Jackson. The words ‘nose’, ‘elephant man’s bones’, ‘child abuse’, ‘oxygen chamber’ or ’surgery’ (just to name a few out of the many notorious cliché’s) do not show up even ONCE… (which is extraordinary and pretty desirable in my opinion!). It’s mainly people close to Michael (in the past AND present) who tell about their experiences of working with him. They talk about the way he does things, there are some funny anecdotes and they’re all really positive and all praise him for the way he works and creates.
The DVD overlaps the era’s from the early ‘Steeltown’ beginning and Michael’s birth in Gary up ’til the Invincible era. It’s a 2003 production so it’s kind of up-to-date.
Special thanks in the end credits of this British production go out to: Samm Brown III, Patrick Chen, Matt Forger, Smith Wordes, Paul Knotter, Nick Brandt, William Brandt Jr., Antonio J. Bryant, Robert D. Bryant, Allen Sides, Bill Bottrell, Uri Geller and Paul Madley. Most of these were interviewed as well!
Interesting inside look of Mr. music composer/creator/singer himself, aka Michael Jackson. Worth having a look at and a must-have for fans! Although fans probably won’t hear too much they’ve never heard before it’s still worth purchasing. I don’t know about the prices worldwide but the price I paid at ‘Fame’ Music Store in Amsterdam was € 19,99.

I hope my review will be helpful to all of you who are interested in this new ‘Chrome Dreams’ release.

Take care!

Menno Alberts (aka tenderoni)

I’m a huge MJ fan, but this DVD is a COMPLETE waste of $$$. It’s full of commentries, hardly any shots of MJ himself. BORING too.

I’m not a big fan of the Oh! My Goddes series. I thought it was really sappy. However, the movie is among my favorite anime films of all time. Instead of being happy all the time Beldandy and Keiechi’s relationship takes a tragic turn. Heaven is in chaos and they have nowhere to turn to for help. And to top it off the Earth is at the brink of destruction by a forced evolution.

The graphics are excellent and the sound is superb. Also the scene “Beldandy vs Urd” is without a doubt the most artistic fight scene i’ve ever seen in any genre of anime or film. It was only between two characters and it had a epic and urgent feel that had me on the edge of my seat. Rent or buy this movie! You will enjoy it.

This movie is easily one of the best anime movies ever. It has an engaging plot, fluid-like animation, and an excellent orchestral score performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic. Although it is very entertaining and pretty much stand-alone, viewers can benefit more if they get some background information on Kosuke Fujishima’s work of the 3 goddesses and their earthly friends, since the movie doesn’t spend much time introducing the characters and their relationship.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ah! My Goddess - The Movie! Click Here

This DVD is practially a re-release of the old edition with the addition of Japanese DTS 5.1, which is only half bitrate. The video transfer is exactly the same as the old one. The old video is anamorphic and excellent to begin with, but you do get the same brief hard sub in two places in the movie. All the extras are literally carried over from the old release, including the mini-goddess episode. New is the inclusion of the TV and theatrical teasers and trailers and an art gallary. There is no reversible artwork and the keepcase is white this time.

If you are die-hard AMG fan or don’t already have this movie, get this DTS release by all means. If you have the old release, you really don’t gain much by upgrading.

I remember first seeing ” I Spit on Your Grave” twenty plus years ago when I was fifteen or sixteen years old. The video store should have never allowed me to rent it; this film deserves a stronger rating than R.

Certainly, over the years my memory had embellished the film; nonetheless, it still shocked me, today.

It is easy to forget that there are actors following a script. The film is evenly paced and unrelenting. Unlike ” The Last House on the Left,” there is no comic relief to remind the viewer that there is a director. One is forced to confront the brutality of rape and violence.

The actress is quite convincing and deserves recognition. The rape scenes are borderline snuff quality except for the fact the editing and directing have moments of brilliance. The men are sickening and easily hated; they are just vicious animals without any redeeming qualities, yet they are believable. Let us not forget, there are men who commit these attrocities. One can appreciate why she seeks revenge.

Without question, the rape scenes are some of the most disturbing moments in cinematic history. The castration scene is unparalleled. The special effects are just that, effective.

The DVD is an excellent package. ” I Spit on Your Grave” isn’t presented as a low budget film. It is art; it’s not a slasher flick; it’s not meant for entertainment.

Buyer beware…

When movies first came out on video there were two legendary exploitation films I had to track down. One was “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and the other was “I Spit on Your Grave,” which is actually the more memorable film of the pair overall (although I do grant the highest place to the “hook” scene in TCM). Director Meir Zarchi’s 1978 film has become rather infamous, since critics hated it, audiences were outraged, and the film was banned in Germany and Great Britain. The story, such as it is, finds Jennifer Hill (Camille Keaton, Buster’s grand-niece) out in the woods of Connecticut to work on a novel when she crosses the path of some local boys who decide she should be the first sexual partner for their mentally-disabled friend. When he cannot complete the rape, his friends do it for him. Then they decide that they are not done with Jennifer.

At issue are not Jennifer’s specific acts of revenge, including the infamous bathroom scene, but rather the series of brutal rapes that precede them. I do not want to meet anyone who is not disturbed by these rape scenes and I think it is fairly obvious that Zarchi intended to make audiences uncomfortable. In retrospect you have to wonder about all those movies with rape scenes that do NOT upset the audience (the current obvious exception that proves the rule would be what happens in “Monster” right before the first murder). But Zarchi certainly pours it on thick, absolutely assuring that things go beyond the tolerance level of anyone who watches this film. So the bottom line is that this film will upset you and it is therefore effective at doing exactly what it wants to do. I have always considered this an “X” rated movie although I would not consider it pornographic in the traditional sense. But it is a very disturbing film and I do not think I would want my kids to see it until after they graduate college (if ever). Anyone renting this film for cheap thrills is in for a shock.

As I now understand it, this 1978 film was originally released as “Day of the Woman,” but that rather innocuous title was replaced by the well known “I Spit on Your Grave,” although the film was also screened as “I Hate Your Guts” and “The Rape and Revenge of Jennifer Hill.” All of this is interesting since it seems the producers were trying to pass off this film with both higher and lover levels of pretention. The cult status here is more for the shock value than any cheap artistic pretentions, that is for sure.

At the age of 7, Heidi Bub was airshipped to the United States when her mother, a Vietnamese woman, gave her up for adoption. Heidi was Amerasian, a result of a relationship between her mother and a US soldier. Heidi was adopted by a single Southern woman (with whom she is estranged), and grows up with a charming drawl and rather American attitudes. Nevertheless, she wants to find her birth mother. This documentary is about Heidi’s reunion with her Vietnamese family. You’ve probably seen long-lost adoption reunions on the news magazines, that end in happy tears and a ‘new family.’ This is not one of those reunions.

The documentary eventually turns so depressing that a number of ambiguous questions come up. Was it fair for the filmmakers to even reunite Heidi with her family? What are the intentions of Heidi’s Vietnamese family? Is Heidi simply heartless, or does her Vietnamese family ask for too much? Does her birth mother even “deserve” anything, considering she abandoned Heidi?

The film-makers maintain a nonjudgemental attitude throughout the film. Nevertheless, several things are striking. One is the utter poverty of rural Vietnam. Heidi’s family at times seems greedy and grasping, but look at their living conditions, and you can understand why. Heidi also seems to possess some of the worst “American” traits: a superficial friendliness coupled by profound aloofness. Heidi’s mother is the saddest figure of the film, a woman who is haunted by a series of misguided choices in her life. Just the look on her face as she realizes that she’s lost her daughter not once, but twice, is heartbreaking.

No matter what “side” you take in this difficult, depressing film, the ending is chilling. One of the recurring themes of the film is Heidi’s soft, cherubic face and her sweet, honey-voiced drawl. At the end of the film, all of that is still there, but her words are so ice-cold that you wonder if the continuing fad of adopting foreign children (first from Vietnam, now from Korea, China, or Romania) does more harm than good. “I don’t know them,” Heidi says of her Vietnamese relatives. But we, the viewers, do know them, and when Heidi says, “I’ve closed the door on them, but I haven’t locked it,” I found myself desperately hoping that one day, she’d open the door again.

Heidi is married to a junior American naval officer and living in military housing on a U.S. naval base with their two young children. But, in 1975, Heidi was Hiep, the 7-year old daughter of Mai Thi Kim, a poor Vietnamese woman living in Danang while her husband was off fighting with the Viet Cong. Hiep’s biologic father was an American serviceman, with whom Kim had a relationship in order to keep food on her large family’s table. When the U.S. forces scurried for home, they took several thousand children of mixed parentage, including Hiep, with them for adoption in the States in Operation Babylift . Hiep was raised in Pulaski, TN as Heidi by a single mother, who convinced the girl to bury her heritage and grow up American. Now, years later, Heidi wishes to discover the identity of her birth mother, much to her foster mother’s horror and eventual estrangement. With the help of the original adoption agency, Heidi locates her long-lost family. DAUGHTER FROM DANANG follows Heidi as she travels to Vietnam in 1997 with a Vietnamese social worker, gifts, and good intentions to meet her birth mother and half-siblings.

What starts out as an emotional and poignant reunion between Heidi and Kim slides steadily downhill as cultures collide and the collateral damage mounts. As Kim cloyingly attaches herself to her daughter’s every movement, one can see troubles ahead. I was irritated that Heidi’s Vietnamese travel companion/interpreter apparently didn’t give her a clue as to the responsibilities inherent to Vietnamese familial ties, and what might be expected of a perceived-to-be-rich American. By the end of the film, the viewer can only feel profound sympathy for all involved, especially as the initial expectations were so extravagantly high.

The history of Kim’s family during the Vietnam War is nicely fleshed out with general archival footage of the time and place, e.g. VC on the march, American troops interacting with the locals, the South Vietnamese panic during the U.S. withdrawal, the victorious North Vietnamese forces.

Most of the documentary is comprised of interviews with both Kim and Heidi, as well as a visual record of Heidi’s one-week interactive visit to her homeland. The repercussions of Heidi’s brief sojourn in the Old Country are emphasized by the last sequence of interviews done two years later.

While watching DAUGHTER FROM DANANG, several tired-but-true aphorisms came to mind: “Be careful what you wish for”, “No good deed goes unpunished”, and “You can’t go home again”. Sometimes it’s better just to move on.

People can piss and moan about plot and structure and character but when you’ve got a film like this one you should put those things aside and watch the movie for what it is, a very well done comedy about mistaken identity. The idea may be cliche but with Bill Murray’s comic timing and prowess, it doesn’t matter if the idea has been used a thousand times. This movie made me laugh from start to finish. Why? Because it is a comedy. If it makes you laugh, its doing its job. Murray delivered a hillarious performance as did Alfred Molina and the old British Bad guy(don’t know his name). His brother played by Peter Gallagher was also surprisingly funny in his scenes. A comic gem that should be given more credit.

First of all….I loved it. Simply put, this film was great. Talk about a story that could have been based upon true life incidents is not what this film is about. This is comedy at its best. Bill Murray’s character is a man who manages a Blockbuster-video store someplace in Iowa. Murray decides to take a vacation and visit his brother in London. His brother (Peter Gallagher) is entertaining some important clients that same evening and sends his brother (Murray) out to participate in this audience-interaction play involving spies called the `Theater of Life’. Well, as the play begins, Murray accidentally stumbles into a real-life spy drama and takes everything that happens next as if he is just acting in a play. The result is non-stop humor which leaves the audience busting up outloud. You don’t have to love Bill Murray to love this film…he brings to the screen the best parts of his roles in “Scrooged”, “Stripes”, “Ground Hog Day” and “What About Bob”…you just have to be ready to experience Bill Murray at his best. Bottom line, what might even be funnier than the film, is being part of an uninhibited audience, because once some people begin laughing, they will be at it for the next two hours.
