After his meteoric rise in popularity from starring in the inaugural season of the ongoing, late-night TV comedy variety show “Saturday Night Live” (1975-), now veteran film actor Chevy Chase effectively began his big-screen career along side veteran big-screen comedic actress Goldie Hawn in the hilarious 1978 film “Foul Play”. Taking place in the beautiful city of San Francisco, the single librarian Gloria Mundy (Goldie Hawn) becomes unwittingly entangled in a mysterious terrorist plot to kill Pope Pius XIII (Cyril Magnin, 1899-1988) when (while visiting San Francisco) he attends a performance of the 1885 opera “The Mikado” by William S. Gilbert (1836-1911) and Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900). After Gloria witnesses a brutal killing and escapes an attempt on her own life, she is interviewed by bumbling San Francisco police detective Lt. Tony Carlson (Chevy Chase). Not totally convinced about her seemingly outlandish story of being attacked by an albino (William Frankfather, 1944-1998, in his big-screen debut) or the warnings she received about a dwarf, Tony nonetheless keeps a watchful eye upon Gloria whom he is attracted to. As Gloria continues to evade the killers, she meets the satyrical musical conductor Stanley Tibbets (the hilarious Dudley Moore, 1935-2002) and mistakenly confuses a short & innocent bible-salesman, J.J. MacKuen (Billy Barty, 1924-2000), to be the infamous dwarf. With a myriad of chase scenes, wistful dialog, unusual characters, Hitchcockian mystery and 1970’s nostalgia, “Foul Play” is sure to bring a smile to most viewer’s faces.

Memorable scenes in the film include Gloria meeting Stanley for the first time, Stanley’s apartment, J.J. MacKuen at Gloria’s front door, Gloria visiting J.J. at the hospital, the “massage” club, Gloria’s friend & landlord Mr. Hennessey (Burgess Meredith, 1908-1997) taking on Delia Darrow (Rachel Roberts, 1927-1980), trying to get to the opera house, the Japanese couple (Rollin Moriyama, 1907-1992, and Mitsu Yashima) and the “Mikado” performance. Other memorable characters include Gloria’s friend Stella (Marilyn Sokol), Archbishop Thorncrest/Archbishop’s brother (Eugene Roche, 1928-2004), Rupert Stiltskin (Marc Lawrence), The Turk (Ion Teodorescu, 1934-1985), the truck driver (M. James Arnett) and Esme the snake (Shirley Python). Overall, I rate “Foul Play” with 5 out of 5 stars and am very happy to see it finally released on DVD. In an interesting bit of trivia, the name “Gloria Mundy” was derived from the Latin phrase, “Sic transit gloria mundi,” which means, “So passes the glory of the world.”

This comedy has stood the test of time; don’t listen to detractors. Leonard Maltin says the film is “protracted” but is perfect by today’s standards (think about the 3-hour epics to which audiences readily flock). “Foul Play” is also an OBVIOUS homage to Hitchcock, not a “plagiarism of Hitchcock” as Maltin shortsightedly declares. Colin Higgins does a great job mixing suspense with comedy (something Hitch fans will recognize). Sure, this is Goldie’s movie, and Chevy plays it laid-back (if Chase were to ham it up he’d be distracting); they make a terrific duo. Saying Goldie was the 70s Meg Ryan (as one reviewer did) is like comparing diamonds to junk jewelry (Meg Ryan is paste; Goldie’s the gem). Supporting actors show inspired casting, especially Dudley Moore as the kinky conductor. Sets are pure 70s in full-tilt (a retro-decorator’s dream). Car-chases with lots of point-of-view will induce vertigo on larger screen TVs (in the theater it was like riding a rollercoaster): it’s grand scale entertainment! “Foul Play” can easily be judged a classic — delightful, fluffy, colorful cotton-candy which should be enjoyed as such. If you’re in the dumps, this film will pick you up. Paramount should have the good sense to release “Foul Play” to DVD in it’s original theatrical aspect ratio…SOON!!!!

I bought this anime on a whim, knowing next to nothing about the plot and the characters. My reasons? It looked interesting and what I read about it made it sound like a good choice. I wasn’t disappointed. Trigun is a very comical anime (don’t let the cover fool you) which centers around Vash the Stampeded (aka the Humanoid Typhoon) with a $$60 billion dollar price on his head. Without getting into too many details, Vash has this bounty because every town he walks into inevitably gets destroyed. He is by no means a mean-spirited man, quite the opposite in fact, always outwitting his enemies either through skill or sheer luck (more-so the latter). His comedic actions and slap-stick answers to every situation hides a mysterious past however. The animation, while simple at times, is done very well, with good use of colors to offset the important characters from the everyday townsfolk (i.e. Vash wears a red overcoat). The music also has a decidedly western “twang” to it, with guitars setting the mood for many of the episodes. Overall one of the better anime series that I’ve seen recently. If you’re in the mood to sit back and laugh and then be amazed, I highly recommend Trigun (I also recommend it if you’re like me, who is a glutton for those “simple plot”-turned-serious-myterious-past animes ^_^). Whatever you favor, get this anime, it’s well worth it.

Vash the Stampede (aka The Human Typhoon) has got to be one of my favorite anime characters of all time. I picked this up from my local rental store expecting some typical anime ultra-violence.

I was pleasantly surprised that it was exactly the opposite. Trigun is hilarious. Vash is the typical lovable, bumbling hero that turns out to be a villain. (That made absolutely no sense here, but you have to see the DVD to understand!) There are plenty of shoot-em-up scenes to appease all you anime violence buffs, but this is easily one of the few animes you wouldn’t mind showing your younger siblings. This anime is very well drawn and one of the few imports I actually think sounds better in English than in its original Japanese.

I love everything about this title, and the additional artwork you get in the DVD’s extra’s section is pretty cool, but more pics would have been nice.

I can’t wait for the next installment of Vash! I highly recommend this one.

I vividly remember the release of Sleeping Beauty. I was old enough to go see it myself - just barely. There I was sitting way up front eating my popcorn and all of a sudden this spectacular dragon materialized right before my eyes. Popcorn forgotten, I was hooked. Cartoons never looked the same to me, and I spent the rest of my life inhaling fantasy and science fiction on a quest for the same thrill.

Animation has changed quite a bit in the ensuing years, but even today Sleeping Beauty is a towering achievement. Now I’m more sensitive to the tricks of the art and can see the masterful use of perspective that made the scenes leap out at you. When I first picked up this DVD I half expected to be disappointed, to find it really wasn’t so glorious in retrospect. This is hardly the case - this film is just as vibrant and alive as it was in 1959.

The added dimension now is that I can see how Disney’s work was a formative influence on animation even today. Artist/Directors like Miyazaki owe much to this film and its predecessor Snow White. And they freely admit it. As a production, Sleeping Beauty created a sense of legitimacy for animation that proved that high quality animation was something well beyond the Saturday morning funnies.

Disney took a great risk when creating this film, pouring a tremendous amount of resources in making it something as perfect as was possible for his time. While the studio reaped the financial benefits, the audience was the real winner, as a whole genre exploded before our eyes. Even now, with anime rapidly becoming a force to be reckoned with, this film stands out for story, art, and music.

The additional features, especially those that retell the making of the film, are excellent as well. All captures in fine detail on this DVD. This is a must see for anyone who still loves a fairy tale.

This movie is one of the great classics of animation, especially for Disney. The DVD version is significantly improved compared to the previous VHS tape. The picture and sound were both greatly enhanced for this release. Furthermore, both widescreen and full screen versions are available in this package.

As with Disney’s other classics, some liberties were taken with the original story of Sleeping Beauty. Disney took the classic story and made it unique and special. In some ways the story is less violent and dark than the original fairy tale. In other ways, such as the portrayal of Maleficent, the movie is dark and forbidding. While the movie is generally a children’s movie, Maleficent’s dragon and her general demeanor can be somewhat frightening for some in the pre-school and younger set.

Aurora was the first love for many a young boy, and was also the model for the aspirations of millions of girls. The romantic love story of Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip enchanted would-be princesses everywhere, and in some cases became the measure by which future spouses were measured (and many of us struggled to meet the ideal).

Of course, the romantic story and the evil of Maleficent were balanced by the comedy of the animal characters and the three bumbling, good-hearted fairy godmothers. While their goodness may appear a bit too vanilla and sweet for some, it is perfect for those longing for the innocence of their youth.

While the movie is the most important part of the DVD, this two CD set contains a phenomenal number of extras. I found the audio commentary by various key individuals to be absolutely fascinating. I planned to listen to portions of the commentary in preparation for my review, and instead found myself listening to the entire thing because it was so incredibly fascinating. Mary Costa (Princess Aurora) and others provide their perspective on the creation of the movie, as well as personal memories of Walt Disney and his influence on the film. The audio commentary by itself is worth replacing your VHS tape, particularly for aficionados of Disney movies.

In addition to the audio commentary are numerous, emphasize numerous, other bonus features. Some I felt were less than worthwhile, others, such as the shorts “Grand Canyon” and “The Peter Tchaikovsky Story,” were excellent bonuses. The number of bonuses on this two disc set was so large that there is a navigational overview included in the DVD that categorizes 38 features found on the second disc.

With the movie and the wealth of bonuses, this movie is a must-buy for those who have yet to have “Sleeping Beauty.” For those who have the VHS, the bonus material is nearly worth the cost of the DVD. Certainly those who are collectors of Disney memorabilia and historians of Disney will find the DVD to be a concise compendium of some of the best information available regarding this film. I highly recommend this DVD!

I remember seeing this movie the first time on HBO when i was 9.. I loved it instantly, a girl receiving powers on her 16th birthday, which turns her life around and makes the best of it by getting popular, getting the guy of her dreams and doing what ever she wants, what more would she want. I wanted to be her. but then when i grew older seeing it again now at 23. She was happy only for a period of time, she wants the guy to love her for who she is and not her popularity and looks. I thought she was crazy to give up her powers. She should’ve kept em and let the spell wear off the guy of her dreams.

Favorite scenes were definitly when she changes her image, and the locker room dance and TOP That!!!

I sure enjoy watching this movie once in awhile, it’s fun to watch, never get bored of it

If you like cheesy 80s’ films, this is the one to watch! and it’s one, if you are like me, that you can watch multiple times. It’s the story of Louise Miller, a 15(about to be 16) year old girl who is a witch. She uses her power to become popular, and get the guy she wants, who bares a striking resemblence to Tom Cruise. Louise realizes later that she wants the guy to like her for herself and not the popularity part of the whole thing. IT’s a great film for teenagers, kids, anyone! Even 30 year old women(like me) still enjoy it. I saw this movie a year or two after it as released. There is a lot of cheesy music, and a weird girl’s gym scene where they dance around to a song called, “I LIKE BOYS!” it’s ultimate cheese.but it’s a cute story with a good moral. I also think that Robyn Lively is one of the best young actresses around. Watch this movie if u want to have fun!

None of the movies here represented can individually redeem a purchase, even for camp aficionados, but together on one disc you can hardly go wrong. Additionally, the prints are average at best, but come on… these movies are not likely to receive Criterion Collection treatment anytime soon. So for the price, they’re fine.

As with a lot of the dvds in this “horror classics” series, the inclusion of at least one of the movies is questionable. Here that would be the crime-based Swamp Women. Yet, I’m glad, because it exists on dvd nowhere else. The other films exist in other formats, and have been amply reviewed, sometimes by me, so I will constrain my comments to Swamp Women. (Phantom gets a dull 2 stars, Creature gets a sometimes-good 3 stars.)

Swamp Women itself is no great shakes, earning a shaky three stars. You need to know little besides “1955″ and “Corman” to figure that out. His movies from this early period are gratingly inept, but without a lot of the goofy charm that they possessed just a few years later. The draw is the cast: Beverly (Pretty Poison) Garland, Marie (The Killing) Windsor and Mike “Touch” Connors, of Mannix renown. The story involves a butchy policewoman going undercover in a Louisiana jail to infiltrate a gang of broads (led by Windsor, whose screen name is Josie. Would that make them Josie and the Alleycats?) who know where their former boyfriends hid a cache of stolen diamonds. The hard-bitten ladies take her into their confidence at once, as they perform “hard labor” in what appears to be a cigarette warehouse. They escape easily by climbing out a window, and run to a waiting car. None of this arouses any suspicion.

They change (offscreen) into pastel shirts, then commandeer a motorboat which holds Connors and his girlfriend (”Hey, baby, wanna tour the swamp?”), and a guide, who is shot dead so that penny-pincher Corman could pay him only for an hour’s work. Connors, the nominal hero, is knocked cold by one weenie Windsor punch. The policewoman must then balance her hardened criminal act with her attempt to keep the hostages alive.

They all head toward the diamonds, inserting lots of padding and filler and stock footage, making time for bickering and cutting off the women’s jeans to make them into short shorts. This meager bit of cheesecake helps the movie a whole bunch. They fight over Connors’ affections as he is tied to a tree, and Garland has a nice wrestling match with the Jan Sterling-esque Jill Jarmyn (If you’re familiar with Jarmyn’s history, you know she’s had practice). Plus, Connors, who earlier had been KO’d by Windsor, battles an alligator and kills it quite simply. Yet not before the budget-conscious Corman allows it to bloodlessly kill the girlfriend, who was flailing in clearly much bluer, cleaner water. (Personally, I think this scene was inserted later only at the behest of Connors and his agent, so Touch would not be the most worthless “hero” in the history of cinema.)

The movie tries hard to be tough and mean, like the caper films of the period, but it doesn’t walk the walk, and it certainly can’t talk the talk. Windsor’s main hard-boiled line (over and over) is “Cut it out, you two!” The Asphalt Jungle this is not. Eventually they reach the “buried” loot, which appeared to be no more than delicately wrapped in dry reeds, rather like a tamale. More squabbling occurs. Then the group begins their trek back out of the swamp. Ill-planned double-crosses, a shootout that wouldn’t have needed to happen, a javelin toss, a rattlesnake, a poignant death, catfights, oarfights, headbutts and a circling police helicopter ensue before a romantic fadeout that is just … yucky.

Now I shall cowboy up and admit my particular bias. Beverly Garland was one of the few B Scream Queens who could act, really act. But it gave me no great pleasure to see her acting like a kill-crazed Bayou Barbie. And although her rassling matches with Jarmyn made me wish this had been made 10 years later, they were somewhat offputting, in part because they were quite convincing. I also did not like her playing second banana to Windsor. I won’t even begin to discuss Garland’s demise.

In fact, the whole cast is decent. But the script and direction are so bad and unambitious that they annoy, rather than elate. Not enough happens to be truly, memorably terrible. (I find bad noir less appealing than bad sci-fi.) A felt-and-rubber Blaisdell monster would’ve helped.

As always, when I describe early Corman, I like it better now, having reviewed it. Writing all the silliness down gives me a chance to process it; what was merely blah before brings chuckles in retrospect. But I don’t know that it would help on repeated viewings.

Still, the three mediocre movies combined make for a dvd worth owning.

Phantom from 10,000 Leagues is the only one of these features that deserves a single star. It at least tries to be straightforward sci-fi, even though its monster is so atrociously ill-made that it looks like a cousin of the Creature from the Haunted Sea–which is intended as parody. The latter has as much satirical savy, however, as a film scripted and shot by second-graders. Swamp Women, meant as jailbreak drama, should be of interest only to those who enjoy ogling short-shorted, cat-fightin’ floosies–or maybe Mike Connors perpetually tied to a tree! Many of the players in the trio are competent actors (seeing them in other films proves this), but the sandwiching cinema is so shoddy that one would be better served acquiring Phantom as a single. It at least has a plot more expansive than that better suited for a short!

James Garner turns in a great performance in this pair of western spoofs, although not related to his popular Maverick role both films are similar in their comic style and Garner is just as crafty as his Bret Maverick character. In Support Your Local Sheriff, Garner is a slick drifter who accepts the job of sheriff in a small Colorado town and uses his wits and quick draw to clean up the town and win the heart of a beautiful yet clumsy lady. In Support Your Local Gunfighter, Garner is a kept man with a bad habit of losing money to the roulette wheel. He then uses another drifter to pretend to be a famous gunfighter in a scheme to make some quick money. Yet when the real gunfighter shows up it is up to Garner to save the day. The two films are quite similar and are companion films with many of the same actors and a similar plot involving a sly stranger who is able to win over the town and a lovely lady with his charm and ability to out think his opponent. I bought this combo pack for a great price; both films are very funny and are classic western spoofs along the lines of Blazing Saddles only G Rated. A great buy for any fan of James Garner or Westerns in general. Just make sure you get both films in this neat combo and save a few bucks while your at it.

These two films are as good as it gets when it comes to comedy westerns. The only problem is the colors on Support Your Local Sheriff are somewhat faded and too red. The print is clear without any scratches or other defects. It’s just that the colors haven’t aged well. I watched it on several sources so it isn’t just the color being off on a particular TV. I still found it quite watchable. It was at most a minor annoyance.

The Wild is available for streaming or downloading.

After going to “The Wild” this weekend with my two kids, I gotta say I don’t understand all the bashing of Disney and this film? Maybe “The Wild” isn’t on par with “The Lion King” or “Toy Story”, but it’s far from being a snoozer like “Chicken Little” or “Home on the Range”. There may be similar characters in both “Madagascar” and “The Wild”, but each film stands on it’s own, and both are pretty enjoyable. “The Wild” was a lot of fun, had some laugh out loud moments, and featured some fantastic animation. The soundtrack was fun, and while the songs may be older, who cares, they fit the spirit of the movie. Eddie Izzard’s koala bear steals the film, and had my son and daughter laughing all afternoon. I am not sure what some of these other movie goers were expecting from “The Wild” and why it was such a major disappointment, but I say that if you enjoyed “Madagascar” then you will like “The Wild” too. Anything featuring the voices of Keifer Sutherland and William Shatner is worth taking a look at.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wild! Click Here

They say Hollywood is a “race for second place,” so you might say that DISNEY’S “THE WILD” is first to be second. Talking animals from an NYC zoo, ending up in an exotic foreign place, facing their fears to become better…talking animals. If this sounds familiar you may have already seen it DREAMWORKS’ MADAGASCAR released less than a year ago. I’m not pointing fingers here, Disney has been supposedly working on this for 9 years, but THE WILD comes across as a “second-hand lion,” watered down and “toothless.”

The only differences, apart from the film and production company names, are style and voice casting. Whereas MADAGASCAR’S visual style is more cartoonish, THE WILD’s approach is ultra-realistic in details. While Madagascar had characters voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and David Schwimmer, the voice casting for THE WILD is up to Disney’s high standards: Respected leader SAMSON (guess HIS species) is voiced by Kiefer Sutherland , street savy Benny the Squirrel by Jim Belushi, dim-witted Larry the Snake by Richard Kind (of “the Producers”) and Janeane Garofalo as Bridget the Giraffe. Don Cherry, Canadian hockey announcer cameos as the penguin MC. One possible breakout character is Nigel the British kolala, voiced by Eddie Fizzard, trying to shed his cuddly image, later becoming idol to a pack of wildebeests along with their choreographing leader dancing to the beat of different drum, Kazar, voiced brilliantly-straight by William Shatner (who provides voice for another animated animal in the upcoming “Over the Hedge.”)

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Wild! Click Here

The WILD’S Director Steve Williams and producer Clint Goldman helped to revolutionize CG character animation during their long association with ILM (”The Mask,” “Jurassic Park,” “Terminator 2″), and were responsible for the popular Blockbuster commercials featuring Carl the rabbit and Ray the guinea pig. The film is scored by Academy-nominated composer Alan Silvestri ( known for the” Back to the Future Trilogy,” and “Polar Express”), the soundtrack is also filled with familiar tunes by such r recording artists EVERLIFE, COLDPLAY, LIFEHOUSE, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Other new material provided by ex-”Monty Python” member Eric Idle and fellow songwriter John Du Prez, the team responsible for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, “SPAMALOT” writing and performing the song, “Really Nice Day” for THE WILD.

As the animals embark on a dangerous journey to rescue one of their own, THE WILD, like its DREAMWORKS counterpart, is suitable for children with themes of teamwork, friendship and father-son relationships ( Samson’s son’s desire to get out of his father’s shadow and have his own adventures). Overall it comes down to this: If you haven’t seen MADAGASCAR you will enjoy this film infinitely more.

There is very little that is new in this documentary. It is simply a vehicle to push Dr Parker Pearson’s own theory, of which no real evidence in support is provided. We are distracted instead with vivid re-enactments, CGI, and a lot of information that is actually “old news”. The latter is incorporated in such a way as to imply that Dr Parker Pearson discovered all of it. People who don’t know better could be forgiven for concluding that he discovered Woodhenge, for example.

There are also elements of existing theories which are claimed to be the good Doctor’s, when in fact they have been around for a long time (eg that Stonehenge is part of a larger ceremonial complex which also incorporates the nearby Woodhenge).

The only thing that appears to belong to Dr Parker Pearson is the theory that Stonehenge was a temple of the dead. But alas, the documentary ends as it began: with no conclusive evidence to support this.

Buy,Download, Or Stream National Geographic: Stonehenge Decoded! Click Here

He also seems determined to have himself viewed as some kind of maverick visionary, insisting that he “broke all the rules” in digging outside the henge walls at Durrington instead of inside. However, it has long been known that the outside of a bank/ditch can yield finds just as important as those inside (such as the food scraps and rubbish found at the Lake Village near Glastonbury).

Overall, I’m not terribly impressed. Too much speculation and stuff I already know, but little to support this guy’s theory. Nothing has been decoded, it seems.

Some folks may have an interest in topics like Stonhenge based on “mystical” attractions. Don’t go here if that’s your thing. National Geographic still gets my support for their scientific approach to such topics rather than taking the easy route, i.e. “x files” ear and eye candy. This program highlights research being done into the reason the ancients built, and how they may have used, this and other similar structures… as well as the communities that may have grown around these amazing human efforts.
