Like the reviewer above, I was puzzled as to why Criterion would release this film in full frame format when everything else about the edition seemed so meticulously struck, so I thought other people might be interested in Criterion’s explanation as to ask why this DVD copy was in the full frame format.

Even though Criterion released the so called widescreen edition previously (1.66:1 letterboxed), each time they re-strike a new product, they will continually consider how the specific movie is supposed to be seen. What I was told was that even though most Europeans probably saw the 1.66:1 widescreen version in the theaters when it was released, it was their belief through a lot of research and interviews, that Godard framed, and meant for the film to be in 1.33:1 - and it was the releasing company that decided on the 1.66:1 format themselves. They told me at Criterion, that neither is necessarily wrong, but that they decided to go with what they believed most suited the vision of it’s maker.

I bought the DVD after hearing their explanation, and you will most likely agree with them when you view this version. From the balance of titles and words on the screen, to the way that shots are constructed (such as a sequence which is obviously intentionally composed of only gesturing hands on the edge of the frame during a conversation) I think their argument is right on the mark. Remember in this season of widescreen fever, it shouldn’t be widescreen for the sake of widescreen, but to present the thing the way it was intended to be seen.

On the aspect ratio. I think Steve Rose, below, is absolutely right. I have the widescreen VHS and the Criterion DVD and have run them together and the DVD is obviously giving the full print image. The W/screen tape is only widescreen because it crops the top and the bottom of the image, giving a very cramped composition to every shot. The DVD has a precision of framing that is always spot-on (as one would expect from Raoul Coutard). Not only that but the VHS tape is washed out; it lacks strong blacks, and has next to no contrast - an important feature in a film that is an hommage to American film noir. The DVD is, all up, a model of care and committment to a wonderful movie. Now we can see it as Godard intended. (In particular, we can again see clearly that the synchronised swimmers are stabbing the executed men to death - something that is not obvious on the VHS tape.) This DVD is still listed as widescreen long after they have had it pointed out to them that it is not! As are many of the other films. Buyer beware!)

The film itself probably needs no further introduction. It is a beautiful and sad *comedy* on humanity and Humanism, touched, as all Godard’s films of this period were, by his tangible love for Anna Karina - whom he photographs as if he were trying to remember forever. The poetry of Paul Eluard is used to wonderful effect in her awakening, and the film is filled with brilliant visual humour - like the swimmers, mentioned above. A stunning film, and one that seems even more daring and original now than it did when it came out - a sad reflection on the current state of cinema, where even alternative films are trying so hard to please.

Martin Mc Donagh’s “In Bruges” proves at least one thing once and for all: Colin Farrell is a thoughtful, emotionally open, soon to do very great things on the screen, actor…something that anyone who has seen “Tigerland” and “Home at the End of the World” already knows despite evidence to the contrary: “S.W.A.T,” “Alexander,” “Miami Vice,” etc. etc.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In Bruges! Click Here

‘If I’d grown up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me. But I didn’t, so it doesn’t” says Ray (Farrell) to his fellow hit man, Ken (burly Brendan Gleeson): both sent to Bruges, Belgium to cool off after a bloody hit that unfortunately went woefully wrong.

This is McDonagh’s first film as Director/Writer and it is evident that he has a great eye for detail both in the sparkling, smart-*ss dialogue as well as with the stunning visual vocabulary of movies. Bruges is a beautiful city: ancient, redolent of the many lives lived there with its cobblestone streets, masonry buildings and outdoor plazas. As such, staid, old lady of Belgium Bruges stands in vivid contrast to the Irish duo of middle-aged, seen-it-all, supposedly Gay, interested in the sights and history of the city Ken and the emotionally over-wrought, painfully sensitive Ray: nervous, anxious, wanting to party, sporadically breaking out in sobs…literally an open emotional wound desperate for succor, blatantly remorseful, seeking redemption in all the wrong places.

“In Bruges” roils over with goofy, silly dialogue (mostly spoken by Farrell who proves very adept at delivering it in droll, wry, ironic style) and profanity, violent bursts of gunfire, and jokes at the expense of dwarfs and Americans. Screenwriter McDonagh steers his odd couple Irishmen through a series of strange/odd situations in which questions of honor, friendship and mortality are mulled. The older Gleeson also proves to be the grounded one: good at what he does (that is kill people) and able, by his very presence to calm Ray down.

Ralph Fiennes is also on hand here and plays Ray and Ken’s boss, a mean-spirited bloke who talks in Michael Caine-Cockney cadences and arrives in Bruges to make sure that a hit, assigned to Ken is carried out without fail.

Buy,Download, Or Stream In Bruges! Click Here

“In Bruges” shares many of the surface traits of such films as Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” but, though great as “Pulp Fiction” is, it doesn’t have the heart and soul of Mc Donagh’s “In Bruges”: a film that satisfies the thriller/action genes of us all but also digs very deep below and reveals the true natures of its very conflicted, ultimately very human characters.

How to describe this deceptively simple film is the hardest place to begin. The plot’s fairly simple: Two Irish hit-men, Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson), are sent to Bruges (in Belgium) to wait out the consequences of an assassination gone terribly awry.

The younger of the two, Ray, is bored and angtsy with the whole place. He’s got a guilty conscience, having been the bloke who totally screwed up the hit. Ken, older and more sanguine about the whole matter, is the total opposite. He’s enjoying the sights and quiet cadence of the city, seeing it as a brief respite from what he knows is a powder keg about to blow up in both their faces.

Without giving away key plot points (all brilliantly revealed as the beginning of the end begins to play out toward its tragic conclusion), all I can say is WOW! Though I have never been a huge Colin Farrell fan, I found the actor to be an absolute revelation. The man can actually act, excellently conveying Ray’s guilty conscience with a manic, twitchy angst that practically sets the screen on fire. When Ray’s mistake is finally revealed in all its heartbreaking glory, Farrell manages to portray Ray’s guilt and attempt at redemption in a scene that awes as well as chills the viewer. This is definitely an Oscar caliber performance, and one would hope the actor will continue to make such smart choices in future roles. The fact that Farrell gets to use his actual Irish accent is definitely a plus for the character. His Ray is a charming, annoying, childish, totally screwed up nut about to crack.

Gleeson, too, is equally convincing in his quiet, calm portrayal. His Ken, world weary and tried of the whole business of death, nevertheless knows he’s got to pull back his shoulders and soldier on–even if it means he has to face the bad end of a gun himself from mob boss, Harry (an excellent Ralph Feinnes channeling an evil more vicious than even Lord Voldemort). Harry’s riff on the Uzi he is offered by a gun supplier is hilarious, as is Ray’s in run with a racist dwarf, among others as he ambles through Bruges seeking a solace neither drink nor drugs, or even a pretty girl, can offer.

The end for these three men is tragic, but totally fitting. I thoroughly enjoyed In Bruges and watched it several times just to soak in the early subtle clues leading up to Ray’s mental meltdown. I admit that I had to watch the film with English subtitles on as I couldn’t understand the actor’s thick accents, but that wasn’t any distraction or detriment.

All in all; decent picture, decent sound. Nothing special, but menus all seem to work and thats rare for cheap compilation DVD’s.

These movies are available individually from amazon, so you can see actual reviews and movie details if you search for the title under DVD’s.

Transfer quality of ECHO BRIDGE 4 movie sets is quite good, although film stock is not always in the best of condition. A bargain price also makes these small collections attractive. All titles are contained on a single disc.

This eighth issue of the series offers up a great old Vincent Price screamer, plus an early-30s tale of a wealthy but silent man arrested for murder, a monster that rampages through a boarding school and crazies doing the same in an institution.

SYNOPSES for “Horror Classics V.8″–

DON’T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT!– An experiment allowing patients to act out their fantasies goes horribly awry. The result: Inmates literally run the asylum, and doctors and nurses suffer horrible deaths at their hands. Film was completed in 12 days on a very small budget.

HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL– This movie was such a smash in its first run, Alfred Hitchcock decided to make his own horror film– “Psycho.” Plot: A wealthy man and his wife invite five guests to spend the night in a mansion where several murders have already been committed. Whoever survives will be rewarded $10,000. Julie Mitchell (Ruth Bridges) is Robert’s sister.

THE SPHINX– A deaf-mute is arrested for several strangulation murders even though eyewitnesses claim they heard the killer speak. Appearing in a small role is Paul Fix, who a quarter-century later played the marshal on TV’s “The Rifleman.” Also here briefly is Gabby Hayes, the bewhiskered cowboy character actor.

WEREWOLF IN A GIRLS’ DORMITORY– A newly arrived teacher is believed to be the manbeast that’s murdering students– or maybe not.

HORROR CLASSICS V.9 features the best “mad doctor” assistant since Frankenstein’s Fritz, a young Jack Nicholson clashing with an old Boris Karloff in his creepy castle, backwoods Georgia zombies, and Chris Lee’s last go-round as the famous vampire.

It’s comedy in the classic sense without all the trash that has plagued our TV sets for far too long. It really is a show that will keep you laughing from start to end filled with characters that are truly unbelievably hilarious.

It’s a shame that this show has come to an end but for the nine years they were on they really did present something beyond unique which all viewers will be able to enjoy for years to come with these box sets. A true television classic!!!!!

This film is a great masterpiece of filmmaking! Perfect in every sense. It is Anthony Perkin’s masterpiece as well….no other character in film history makes you cringe yet feel sorry for at the same time. It takes a special talent to do that and why he didn’t get nominated for the Oscar much less win will never be understood!! Just as Vivien Leigh will always be Scarlett O’Hara, Judy Garland will always be Dorothy, Anthony Perkins will always be Norman Bates.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Psycho! Click Here

The rest of the cast is outstanding as well…notably Janet Leigh as the doomed Marion Crane. She deserved her Oscar nomination for her performance.

The DVD is loaded with a dandy of an extra “The Making of Psycho” plus additional trailers and bonus materials that make this edition well worth owning. Even without the extras though, this film would still be a masterpiece thanks to Hitchock, Stefano’s screenplay, and Perkins’ unparalleled acting!

Alfred Hitchcock guarded the plot of PSYCHO against publicity, and in 1960 audiences came to the film without being able to anticipate the unexpected twists and turns of the plot. More than forty years later, the movie’s fame is such that even those who have not seen it are often able to sketch the basic outline of the story in a few words. This demonstrates the film’s fame; what demonstrates it quality, however, is the fact that even those who know the plot before seeing it are seldom disappointed.

Very loosely based on Robert Bloch’s pulp novel, which was itself very loosely based on killer Ed Gein, PSYCHO presents us with the tale of Marion Crane (Janet Leigh)–who, in a moment of madness, steals forty-thousand dollars. Running scared, Marion checks into the out-of-the-way Bates Motel. And there, as the DVD production notes gracefully state, she becomes the most grossly inconvenienced hotel guest in cinema history.

The late 1950s and early 1960s saw a deluge of low budget and badly made films that commanded box office business via tawdry subject matter, and according to lore director Alfred Hitchcock was curious to see what might happen if he himself made such a film–but made it well. Working with a remarkable script and gifted cast and crew, the result was a masterpiece. Although it is often described as a horror film, PSYCHO is less horror than it is a study in paranoia and suspense, and certainly a lesson in the fact that one need not bother with graphic gore or big budgets to impress audiences.

Much of the film’s success is in its detail. Joseph Stephano’s script is memorable for its repetition of verbal motifs and its extremely disquieting tone; Bernard Herrman’s famous all-strings score builds tremendously upon it. The simple yet meticulous sets communicate building unease, and the strangely flat, semi-documentary black and white cinematography has a voyeuristic edge that is extremely disturbing.

There are elements that can be justly criticized–moments at which the script sounds a false note or characterizations seem a bit artificial–but these small points fade against the overall power of Hitchcock’s vision, a vision that here makes viewers squirm even when there seems nothing tangible on screen to squirm about. But in the end, this is the film for which Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, and John Gavin will forever be remembered… and one of the several films that will forever be associated with one of the twentieth century’s most masterful directors.

This DVD largely restores PSYCHO to its original form. Although the first few minutes of the print show wear and tear, for the most part it is remarkably pristine and (after years of pan and scan television broadcasts) is returned to its original ratio. While there is no audio commentary track, the DVD package includes the original trailer with Alfred Hitchcock, extensive production notes, and an extremely impressive documentary that includes numerous interviews, newsreel footage, production photographs, storyboards, and the like. Even if you have the film on VHS, you’ll likely want to purchase the DVD. Strongly recommended.

Bad Apple has just moved into town and has a score to settle. With the help of her sidekick worm, she spins a web of temptation that traps people in what they love most. She wants to take over the town and has set her sites on the mayor, a news reporter, and LarryBoy himself. Will LarryBoy fall prey to her plot? Can he overcome his love of chocolate to save the day?

I’ll confess, as much as I love the VeggieTales series, the LarryBoy episodes are some of my least favorite. I actually wasn’t looking forward to this release, but I got it anyway. I’m glad to be proved wrong.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Veggie Tales - Larryboy and the Bad Apple! Click Here

The plot, while predictable, is fun. Larry has never been the smartest of the Veggie characters, but they don’t make his stupid here, a complaint in the earlier LarryBoy shorts. And the story is funny with several great lines and site gags along the way to entertain kids and adults alike.

While most Veggie videos cram two stories into their 45-minute running time, this episode only features the one story. They don’t even break for a “Silly Songs with Larry” segment. However, they do include the counter top wrap around with Bob, Larry, and Archibald Asparagus. These scenes are easily some of the funniest they’ve done in several episodes. I was laughing the entire way through them. The video does include a new LarryBoy theme song, “Rock on LarryBoy.” Performed by “Shux,” they feature a new vegetable we haven’t seen before. I bet you can guess what they might be.

The theme here is obviously temptation, and they do a great job showing both the power of it and our need for God and others to help us through. My only complaint is that all the temptations shown here are things that are ok in moderation like video games, TV, and chocolate. Of course, since previous LarryBoy episodes have dealt with lying and gossip, this is a minor issue. Still, parents will probably want to point out that some temptations should never be given into.

The DVD comes with the standard Veggie goodies. We’ve got an audio commentary and behind the scenes feature for the adults and storybooks and games for the kids. The animation continues to improve with each episode, and the full surround sound is great as always.

I may have to go back and give the previous LarryBoy episodes a chance. If they are as good as this one, I’ve written off a great character in the Veggie universe.

I saw this in a sneak preview edition (no bonus features, just Bob & Larry counter-top introduction and conclusion with the Larry Boy story and ending music video). I have to say that it is the best Veggie Tales product in years and even the best Larry Boy yet!

The opening banter/dialog between Bob and Larry (Boy) and its conclusion after the episode is great. During the entire show, the graphics are smooth. The music is enticing and well done. The story is compelling and, while at once simple, at the same time it is also cleverly crafted. There is obvious and effective humor for the kids and more subtle and equally effective humor for us adults. And the moral message is both clear and applicable to people of all ages.

I watched it with my wife and our almost seven year old son, and all three of us loved it.

This one’s definitely a new Larry Boy classic!

I saw the movie in a beautiful theater in downtown San Francisco on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and was surprised to find so few people in the movie theater–maybe 75 of us, and the theater could have fit 500. I wonder if some of the lukewarm reviews haven’t influenced people’s decisions to go to RENT. Hope not, for I’m here to tell you, this movie is dynamite and IMHO much, much better than the play. For one thing, in the movie you can hear every word, even with the increased rock instrumentation, for hundreds of sound experts have worked their magic and made sure that even people underwater could hear every single syllable; whereas on stage, it depended from night to night what percentage of the lyrics were going to be coming across the temperamental sound system of the Nederlander (NYC).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rent! Click Here

I did miss Daphne Rubin-Vega who was incomparably sexy and chilling as Mimi, but I never believed her being in love, and Rosario Dawson looked like she was just ‘playing’ at being bad and underneath she was ready to fall in love as soon as she saw Roger through the window. Her scenes of addiction are captured in the movie effectively, in a rpaid montage that might disconcert some rentheads but will, I think, be easily understood by those new to the show.

Yes, some of the actors looked older than 20 somethings. But we forget that most of those who died of AIDS in the 1989-90 period were actually in their 30s. What’s the big deal? To me, Angel’s fate is all the more sad because he seemed to be healthy for so long and then, all of a sudden, well, any more would bring me into spoiler territory.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Rent! Click Here

Idina Menzel is not as over the top as she is on stage, but there’s still plenty of fire power there, and she’s bigger than anything in the movies since the heyday of Betty Hutton! She looks remarkably beautiful and she doesn’t miss a trick; and just when you think she’ll overshadow Tracie Thoms as her attorney girlfriend, Joanne, the latter pulls off some memorable comic business and signals her disappointment and regret with her expressive brown eyes. Anthony Rapp is charming as Mark Cohen, he comes off as a tiny terror, I wonder how tall he is, the constant scenes of him snarking down the streets with his fists clenched in anger at his sides, but no one else around to reveal his true proportions–the old Alan Ladd trick. And Adam Pascal is suave and tormented in equal measures as Roger. His eyelashes are so long I expected them to have a special spotlights in the credits, but no.

I have to disagree with the posters who claim that Larson wrote all the best numbers for the men in the cast. Maybe that’s personal pleading, but I find the best songs pretty much divided right down the middle. Mimi’s “Out Tonight” isn’t as exciting as on stage, but it is much more compellingly staged, as Rosario Dawson steps out of the Cat Scratch Club after her shift only to launch into the second verse, and seems to scale the wall of the loft to get to Roger like Catwoman in the third. (”I’ll let you make me . . .”) “Light My Candle” suffers a little without Daphne Rubin-Vega in it, and Adam Pascal acts as though he knows he’s cheating on her with Rosario Dawson. Afterwards he gets his balls back. The ensemble singing of “Will I?” and “Another Day” are perfectly staged and rehearsed, and it’s there that I started to lose it. I guess I must have spent the last seventy minutes of the movie in a continual rain of tears. By the end I had to sit through all the credits in a vain attempt to gather composure. The faces of those whom I lost to AIDS flashed before my eyes. Not all of them, but some of them. I did resolve to go out and try to practice love on a grand scale. They got me this time. “No other path, no other way, give in to love or live in fear.”

These sentiments are vapid and, in the daylight, seem a little silly, but the beauty and power of the movie is to convince you of their truth. Good work all around. I hope the movie’s an enormous success.

I was born to love “Rent.” Having grown up listening to my mother’s record of “La Boheme” playing as she did her housework, I anxiously anticipated seeing the Broadway production when I was in New York in 1999. Although, it was superb, the movie version was so much more enjoyable to me, mainly because the words to the beautiful songs were clear and much more understandable. I realize Broadway is a one-shot deal and a movie can have countless takes on a scene, so I’m not putting down the play I loved in any way, just saying the movie was an easier and more enjoyable viewing experience.

From the spectacular opening scene where the full cast sings the beautiful “Seasons of Love,” the stage is set for a glorious celebration of life, living it to the fullest, and enjoying every moment. Yes, there is heartbreak on the screen and many moist eyes in the theater, but this is mainly a joyful story of friendship, love, and reaching out to your fellow man.

The acting is superb, lovingly done by actors who obviously relate to their roles in a profound way. Wilson Jermaine excels as Angel, especially in the show-stopping “Today 4 U.” Adam Pascal and Rosario Dawson are believable as the romantic leads and Jesse L. Martin will astound his “Law and Order” fans with his rich singing voice and dancing ability. All the cast is marvelous, the show is electric with its high-energy singing and dancing, and overall, the best movie I have seen in a long, long time. I will definitely get the DVD the day it is available.

A very winning cast, great location, superb kids’ story to work with, good production make for some campy scariness for kids with entertainment for mom and dad as well. Charming little movie that appeals to the kid in all of us.The predicament of the cows really did make me laugh out loud.

The acting by one and all was excellent, especially Richard E. Grant as the head of the vampire family. He brought a non-threatening, yet nerve wracking (well, for kids, anyway) presence to the movie. His charming powers over Mrs. Thompson were hysterical, and the entire cast did very well with this movie.

One for the kids that mom and dad will enjoy sitting through, which is a rarity anymore, except for the likes of Shrek.

Oh, and I can’t omit Rollo Weeks, as The Little Vampire himself. He was so charming, so perfectly nailed the role of Rudolph. As well as the role for arguably the cutest kid in movies, Jonathan Lipnicki, as Tony Thompson. The crush Anna had on him was acted out adorably by Anna Popplewell, as well. There was just great acting all around in The Little Vampire.

A job well done by all involved. Entertaining, campy, scary enough for the little ones without freaking them out even slightly, and still entertaining for the adults.

“The Little Vampire,” directed by Uli Edel, is an appealing fantasy/comedy for a family audience. The story involves Tony Thompson (played by Jonathan Lipnicki), an American boy whose family has relocated to Great Britain. There Tony befriends Rudolph (Rollo Weeks) a vampire boy whose family is being ruthlessly pursued by a vampire hunter who aims to destroy them.

This film portrays vampires as a persecuted minority who really mean no harm to humans (they’ll drink cow blood if they need to). The film contains some fun sight gags (many involving vampire cows) and one-liners. There are also some genuinely magical sequences (most notably, some flying scenes).

Lipnicki carries his lead role well. And the wonderful Alice Krige (who also played the Borg Queen in “Star Trek: First Contact”) is a delight as Rudolph’s sexy vampire mom. But the standout performance is delivered by young Rollo Weeks as the vampire boy. Weeks brings both an ethereal charisma and a childlike ebullience to his character. The vampire performances are enhanced by good makeup and costuming.

There are a few slightly scary scenes, but nothing that bothered my 5-year old nephew too much. The accent in this film is on humor, fantasy, family, and friendship. I noticed some holes in the film’s explanation of vampirism. But if you don’t get too critical about the details, you should find “The Little Vampire” to be a delight for all ages.

Yes, this movie has plenty of funny moments, but there is a very real and sometimes rather touching story that takes precedence over everything that happens. You can’t get through the most serious of situations without the palliative of laughter now and again, and Life actually does tell a serious story. Eddie Murphy proves once again that he is a great actor, and Martin Lawrence was surprisingly good as the more serious of two men sentenced to life in prison for a murder they didn’t commit. One night in 1932, fate brought Rayford Gibson (Murphy), a smooth-talking hustler with big dreams, and Claude Banks (Lawrence) a respectable fellow about to start a good job, together in a New York nightclub. For entirely different reasons, both guys have to face the displeasure of the club owner’s wrath; and so it is that Gibson and Banks end up going on a bootlegging run to Mississippi. One dead man later, and both men are sentenced to life in prison for murder. Since Banks blames Gibson for getting him into all this mess, there relationship varies in quality as the years go by, but gradually a real friendship develops between them. They try to escape several times but end up spending basically their whole lives in prison. Along the way, we meet with several sub-plots involving some of their fellow inmates, but the movie never strays far from the lives of Gibson and Banks. The passage of time is marked by clips of historical events, and some excellent makeup works makes both men look old and worn out as they advance into their senior years.

This is not a prison story of hopelessness, however. While no pardon ever comes their way, justice has a way of willing out eventually, and the final ten minutes of the film are just terrific. Since the story does take place in Mississippi in 1932 and beyond, race plays a major part in the film, but it does not define the movie by any means. There are a number of funny scenes, especially those involving pie and cornbread, and Eddie Murphy will definitely make you laugh - Martin Lawrence sort of plays the heavy here to Murphy’s periodic antics. Some familiar faces pop up in the movie: Rick James plays the New York club owner, Bernie Mac has a relatively minor role, and Heavy D plays a small but important part. Wyclef Jean contributes an original score for the film. The whole cast is excellent, and a very good script keeps the film on pace and lively.

This isn’t Stir Crazy; there are plenty of laughs, but I wouldn’t call this a comedy - Life the movie is funny in the way life itself can sometimes be - laughter can get us through the hard times, but it doesn’t hide the fact that the hard times are there. This movie really deserves more attention than it has received; with its serious underlying quality, it ranks among Eddie Murphy’s most impressive films.

I’ve seen “Life” twice thus far, and I must concede that it has to be one of the best films to ever cast Eddie Murphy. He and Martin Lawrence are just as emotionally poignant as they are downright hysterical in this memorable comedy/drama of two Prohibition-era guys from Harlem NYC who inadvertently become framed for murder in the Deep South while on a bootlegging run for the local crime boss they each owe debts to back home. They are soon enough sentenced to life imprisonment in a Mississippi chain gang where they share a “Felix and Oscar”-esque relationship that spans 65 years through thick and thin times (including numerous escape attempts). However in the end, they literally become friends for life as they come to terms with their imprisonment. The make-up done by 6-time Oscar winner Rick Baker to transform Murphy & Lawrence from young to old over the course of so many years is the true showstopper of “Life”. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Mr. Baker garners Oscar #7 come 2000; he and Murphy have been quite a dynamic duo since “Coming to America”. A definite must-see!

Elia Kazan’s “East of Eden” is based on the John Steinbeck novel of the same name. It is a modern tale of Kane and Abel.

While the film is certainly fantastic, probably its greatest claim to fame is that it was James Dean’s first film. It is rare, today, that we see a novice young actor (remember Dean was only 22 when this movie was made) secure a leading role in a high profile drama - as this was - and then nail it so well that critics everywhere fell under his spell. Prior to this film, Dean had only made a handful of commericials, television appearances, and one or two worthwhile theatrical roles.

In an era when “screenplay” meant acting for the screen and playing it for the last row, Dean, Clift, and (personally, regrettably) Brando, were the only actors out there playing for reality.

Dean’s Cal is a tortured youth, who has never won his strict father’s (the formidable Raymond Massey) acceptance and desperately seeks to do so. His brother, Aaron (played by Dick Davalos), is obviously favored by the father and this further salts the wounds that Cal carries. Julie Harris plays Aaron’s fiance as a fawning and often obsequious girl, which can be a bit more than off putting at times.

Joan Van Fleet portrays Cal and Aaron’s “dead” mother. Rather than suffer the embarrassment of admitting his failures as a husband, father, and man, the boys’ father tells them and everyone else that their mother long ago died. In truth she has been running a bordello in the next town.

Through a series of machinations, Cal meets his mother, and asks for her assistance in winning over his father. The plot fails miserably for Cal, setting off a chain of events from which no one can return.

Dean’s performance - the only one to be seen while he was alive - registered off the Richter scale with the youth of the 1950’s. Never before had they seen someone their age portray someone their age in such a believable manner. He became an instant star.

As is typical, Hollywood has attempted to remake this film several times, and did so failingly. While the acting often can seem over the top, no one has ever been able to capture the lightning in a bottle that Kazan did with his amazing cast in this truly classic film.

I first watched this movie on television when I was about 16, because I wondered what all the fuss was about James Dean. I soon found out: he was so unbelievably natural in his acting technique that the audience is captivated by his brilliance. This was Dean’s film debut and he burst like a thunderclap in the public’s ears, not to mention staid Hollywood, which came to both fear and admire the handsome, rebellious youth. In this haunting John Steinbeck tale, Dean is the neurotic half of twin sons belonging to Bible - reading lettuce farmer Raymond Massey, whose vast acreage stretches through the rich Salinas Valley in California. Aron (Davalos, in another powerful debut) is the well-adjusted upstanding son whose normal relationship with his girlfriend and his diligent pursuit of continuing his father’s legacy is admired by the patriarch. Cal is very different from his brother and the troublesome youth mistakenly believes his father doesn’t love him. A haunting scene has Dean introduce Davalos to their supposedly dead mother. The boys were brain-washed by their father into believing their mother Kate was some sort of angel: the truthful realisation that she’s a financially successful Madam who operates a whorehouse in Monterey causes Davalos to become deeply traumatised. Many people will feel empathy for BOTH brothers during this powerful scene: it shows us that Cal is, if anything, REAL while his brother is somewhat sheltered and idealistic in comparison. The performances are all splendidly colourful and absorbing: Dean is unforgettable as Cal - for whom the audience feels empathy - Julie Harris is fine as Abra (she succumbs to Cal’s raw sexuality) and Jo Van Fleet is excellent as the tough yet essentially tender-hearted tubercular Kate who likes her boy Cal because he “has sense” as she believes she does. Raymond Massey is fine as the puritanical father, Adam. Burl Ives is memorable as Sam: he quotes the Biblical passage which includes the picture’s title. Some critical snobs say that the film was over-directed by Kazan but it made Dean an over-night sensation who acted with a unique naturalistic style and died a legend at the tender age of 24.
