this movie had what the sequels missed out on, smokey. he pretty much made the first movie. such memorable lines in this movie at such quantities, it’s hard not to like it. “how do you get fired on your day off?” “what you stealin boxes for, you tryin to build a clubhouse?” i have seen this movie at least 100 times and still never grow tired of it. whenever i can’t think of anything else to watch, friday creeps up and inserts itself into the dvd player. great great movie.

of course deebo was a great villian. there is allways that big @ss thug that wants to prove that noone can step up to him. what a better person to play that role then tom ‘tiny’ lister jr. maybe that guy from the green mile. chris tucker was absolutely amazing as a pothead. i don’t think anyone could have pulled that role off better then him. ice cube did a great job as craig and i don’t know who played as mrs. parker, but she did a good job too. then you have the corrupt preacher played by bernie mac. hillarious movie from beginning to end especially when they did the flashback scenes with smokey taking a hit of angel dust and finding himself in deebos chicken coop.

this movie had one of the best soundtracks ever put together. everything from ice cube and cypress hill to rick james and 2 live crew. best placement in the movie for the soundtrack had to be when craigs girlfriend got out of the car all pissed off and hoochie mamma was playing in the background. the best hood classic ever.

This is THE funniest comedy I have ever seen. I agree with another reviewer: I can watch this movie a million times and never tire of it. It gets funnier and funnier each time.

Tucker stole the show as Smokey, who sells pot but who also smokes it and it’s that love that causes him trouble in the middle of the film. But it’s his lines and his mannerisms as Smokey that make him hilarious.

One of my favorite parts is where Rita pulls up to meet Smokey for a blind date. Rita, who said she looked like Janet Jackson but weighed a good 250 pounds says lustfully, “Ooo, what’s up?” The expression on Tucker’s face made me cry, I was laughing so hard: It immediately dropped as he gets an eyeful of her and says, “Not a damn thing!”

The movie is chock full of goodies. The delivery of the script is what makes this movie and everyone was cast perfectly for their parts.

Sequels were unnecessary because this stands out by itself.

Amazon is incorrect in the listing of the runtime - this is the 125 minute version (117 minute in the UK). This has not been edited by the studio (like Zu Warriors/Legend of Zu etc). This is the official Director’s Cut of the movie (if you look closely at the box art you will see the banner at the top also informs you of this)- it just so happens that the Director’s Cut is a lot shorter than the released theatrical version - a Director’s Cut does not mean a longer cut! I like the unedited version although it does have a tendancy to ramble a bit…so I would be interested in seeing this version.

CASSHERN is loosely based on the Japanese anime in the 1970’s called “Casshan Robot fighter” which was in turn adapted into the live-action TV series. Highly stylized and visually stunning, “CASSHERN” gives you that first impression that it is a drag-out robot smashing action film as its trailer suggests. However, there is more to this film than first meets the eye.

An alternate world with an alternate history.

The world is divided between two opposing alliances. After fifty years of bitter warfare, the Greater Eastern Federation triumphs over the Europan forces and gains control over the Eurasian continent. However, this is a hollow victory. Years of chemical, biological and nuclear war have ravaged the land; draining its resources and left an exhausted population at the mercy of every pestilence and newly-mutated disease. With the war ravaged world, hope dwindles for humanity’s future. Remaining leaders debate over the chances of finding some way to stave off the seemingly-inevitable decline of civilization. One man comes forward with a possible solution. Dr. Azuma is a geneticist who proposes a “neo-cell” treatment that can rejuvenate the body and regenerate humankind. He’s driven in his studies by a desire to save his beloved wife, Midori, from the ravages of a pollution-caused rare disease. He appeals for funding to the government but the selfish politicians in the Health division rejects his proposals, fearing that the new technology may threaten their entrenched powers.

However, a sinister faction in the powerful military makes an offer to Dr. Azuma to provide the financial support he needs to further his research. When an incident occurs in the lab that sends the Professor’s “neo-cell” cloning experiment haywire, a race of mutant human beings (Shinzo Ningen or Neo-Sapiens) is unleashed upon the world. Instead of being the savior of mankind, the Professor’s miraculous technology looks set to threaten its very existence…

Desperate, the scientist exposes the dead body of his son, Tetsuya to the Neo-cell fluids. Tetsuya, now back from the dead with a new powerful body must become Casshern, to defend the GEF from the rogue “Neo-Sapiens” and their killer robots… (WHEW! I’m tired)

The premise of the film is the horror of war. It is basically a 140 minute anti-war movie. Casshern is a hard film to review, when I first saw it, it wasn’t very clear what Tetsuya was fighting for. Now, I saw it for the 2nd time privy to this review, and I kind’a like its mythology. As with most anime, the film has its own share of philosophical storytelling; there are a lot of political, emotional, social, philosophical reasons for Tetsuya’s struggle. He is very reluctant to fight again, being an ex-soldier. One might think that his goals are simple, that defending man’s existence is his main goal. This is a Japanese film, so Tetsuya partly fights for something deep; Love.

There is a lot of content in Casshern. This fact may be good and bad. Perhaps I read too much between the lines, but its impact and message is too strong to ignore. The LAST thing this film is an action film. The film relies on provoking emotional responses from its characters; we see the horrors of war and what needs to be done to change it. The twist is; one MUST fight a war to effect such change.

Ok, I’m rambling. Casshern is a visual and aural feast for PS3/Xbox 360 fan boys. The visuals seem necessary to distract us from all the philosophy and the whole oedipal complex that is played heavily in the film. When Tetsuya starts smashing robots, with his one-on-one duels, the film takes a different tone. So, enough with the analysis! CASSHERN looks simply ASTOUNDING. The set designs, lurid cinematography and the CGI are all packaged in one cool film that is sure to be awe-inspiring. The top-notch eye-candy is sure to satisfy!

I own the region-3 release and I’ve seen the original region-2 Japanese release which both utilized the same impressive transfer. It is very likely that the U.S. release will look the same. I hope Amazon’s specs are incorrect, the runtime amazon says is 80 minutes, the uncut film is 142 minutes.

VIDEO/AUDIO: ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN 2.40 RATIO. The picture is very nice and is intentionally enhanced to look almost like a `painting’. Colors are radiant, the contrast is sharp with very solid blacks. The Japanese 5.1 Dolby EX/6.1 DTS-ES is very powerful. English subs are excellent.

Parting thoughts:

Once you get over the fact that this is not an action film, viewers will appreciate the message that Casshern delivers. If you accept this film for what it is, you will be treated to an excellent piece of film-making. Casshern is definitely worth a watch, for CGI fans and even for those who aren’t. This film takes its time setting things up so patience and attention is a must!

All 3 seasons in one package! it doesn’t get any better than this. These are complete and unedited unlike some sets that are being released with different music, or edited episodes. season 1 is in black and white as originally aired, seasons 2 and 3 are in color as aired. I have watched reruns for years and when i saw that the complete series was available as one set, i couldn’t pass it. Bonus footage includes interviews with Russell Johnson and Sherwood Schwartz, also included is the pilot episode with a different ‘professor’ ‘Ginger’ and ‘Mary Ann’ and different opening and closing music. A great treat for fans and someone that wants it all! Quality is excellent! I don’t purchase many tv shows on dvd, but this was a must for me! 5 stars without a doubt!!!

It’s so great to have all of the Gilligan’s Island episodes, and the commentary by Sherwood Schwartz on each season. They have taken GI off all my satellite stations, so I had to get the DVD’s to see the episodes.

Everything from views on penis size, AIDS, condoms, strippers turned porn goddesses, the role of the men, directors, couples in the biz, stalkers, fans… you name it…and there is probably a section of the documentary that deals with the subject.

I think this documentary is very good with showing real porn stars talking about the life of being a porn star, how scary it is and getting tested for AIDS, this should win an Oscar.

The Longest Day (1962 film)

In 1959, 15 years after the Allied invasion of Normandy, former war correspondent Cornelius Ryan wrote The Longest Day, his popular and critically-acclaimed account of the D-Day landings. Based on painstaking research and interviews with Allied and German veterans and the French civilians swept up in the events of June 6, 1944, The Longest Day remains among the best books on the topic.

It is not surprising, then, that 20th Century-Fox studio chief Darryl F. Zanuck bought the film rights and asked Ryan, (who, besides having been a reporter, had also written plays) to adapt The Longest Day into a screenplay for a major motion picture. Zanuck, who had served in the Army Signal Corps as a lieutenant colonel and helped document the D-Day landings, had always wanted to make a feature film about the invasion. He also had another pressing reason to make what he thought would be a big hit: 20th Century-Fox, nearly crippled by box office flops and the costly production of Cleopatra, was on the brink of bankruptcy.

In order to attract audiences, Zanuck and his massive production team assembled a cast almost as large as the actual invasion force. 48 major international stars from three countries were signed on to what a World War II trivia book described as “the most expensive black-and-white movie made.” Shot in studios near Paris and on the Mediterranean island of Corsica, The Longest Day required not one but three directors. Andrew Marton shot the American exterior episodes, Bernhard Wicki handled the German exterior episodes, and Ken Annakin directed the British exterior episodes. Overseeing the entire project were Zanuck and Associate Producer Elmo Williams, who would later executive produce the Japanese-American Pearl Harbor classic, Tora! Tora! Tora!

The movie basically follows the book’s structure in its three major acts: The Wait, about the preparations on both sides for the invasion; The Night, about the night airborne assault; and The Day, about the landings on the five invasion beaches. The DVD breaks these three acts into 12 chapters.

While by early 21st Century standards The Longest Day’s combat scenes are rather tame - there are no extremely gory scenes as explicit as those in Saving Private Ryan - they do capture the vastness and complexity of the Normandy landings. Shot in a semi-documentary style (major characters are introduced with identifying “credits” so we know who is who), The Longest Day is as accurate as a 1962-era film studio could depict an actual event. The black-and-white presentation allows insertion of a few snippets of actual documentary footage (mainly of German soldiers marching through Paris and running to their fortifications near the beaches) seamlessly into the film. Of course, some characters (such as Eddie Albert’s Col. Thompson) seem to be composites or even fictitious, and some actors (such as John Wayne and Robert Ryan) look nothing like the officers they are portraying. Wayne plays Lt. Col. Benjamin Vandenvoort, who in 1944 was in his 30s, while Ryan plays Brig. Gen. James “Slim Jim” Gavin, who at 38 was the Army’s youngest general. (The more accurate, but far less popular sequel, A Bridge Too Far, cast Ryan O’Neal as Gavin.)

Accuracy goes out the window in at least one respect, and this one is at the top of most D-Day veterans’ list of gripes. While the movie does mention the awful conditions on the transports and landing craft (”Man, that stink! Diesel oil, backed up toilets, vomit. And there ain’t no place to get sick in!” gripes one soldier to Roddy McDowell), when the Allied soldiers get out of the landing craft, they hit the beaches running and screaming like banshees. In Stephen E. Ambrose’s 1994 D-Day, June 6, 1944, veterans scoff at Zanuck’s fanciful depiction, pointing out that they were too tired and too sick to run across the beach, much less yell like Confederates at Gettysburg.

Nevertheless, The Longest Day remains one of the best war movies ever made. Released in October of 1962 and enjoying a long run at the theaters, it was the box office’s top draw for 1963, earning an Academy Award for special effects and, luckily for Zanuck, saving 20th Century Fox from bankruptcy.

The DVD presents The Longest Day to its original CinemaScope wide screen presentation, improving on the CBS-Fox two-cassette VHS version, which was released on the usual pan-and-scan “full screen” re-edit. Other improvements are a sound remastering by THX and a few tiny bits of additional footage. The single disc, however, has very few extra features; only the theatrical trailers to The Longest Day, Patton, and Tora! Tora! Tora!

Here we have the consummate of all war movies of the D-Day invasion of Normandy in WWII in a 2-disc release.

However, in 2000 when FOX released a new digital but non-anamorphic transfer, they wisely placed the German and French subtitles in the lower “black bar” area left vacant due to the letterbox format, making for a very pleasant viewing experience. In this release the subtitles are restored back onto the main body of the film. As the text is white and the film being B&W, this makes for a very fatiguing 3 hours of viewing. Sometimes the text just disappears in the white portions of the film.

***Mini update! As someone politely pointed out, with newer HI-DEF 16 x 9 widescreen TV’s, the subtitle text would disappear with the non-anamorphic 2000 version. As HDTV has superb color and grayscale resolution, this is probably a moot point. As I and many are still waiting for HDTV prices to come down & the technology to go up, it may be advantageous to own both sets.

Otherwise a great movie portraying a fairly realistic look at that fateful day of June 6, 1944. Filmed appropriately in Black & White with complementing WWII stock footage. This is a film for the whole family as it truly does represent the carnage of war without the blood and gore that can disturb some viewers (like myself).

First of all i’m from the u.k so i got the south park season’s 1-4 box sets a long time ago. but then when i found out that better sets were going to be relest in the u.s i decided to stop collecting the one from the u.k and start collecting them from the u.s (yes i do have a multiregion DVD player) Here are the episode’s that will be in this set. i will also give my rating on each episode

The second season opens with Matt and Trey explaining why they ran “Terrance and Phillip in Not without my Anus” on April Fools day rather then the conclusion to the episode about who is Cartman’s father.

The second disk seemed to have some editing problems. The sound for Matt and Trey’s opening was low and yet the shows had a normal sound level. Be careful or you will get blasted.

Terrance and Phillip in not without my Anus: Scot the Canadian Prosecutor tries to frame Terrance for murder in order to eliminate the duo. He fails and later gets a call from Saddam who offers to help get rid of them. Terrance and Phillip will head to Iraq to rescue Terrance’s illegitimate daughter (Celine Dion is the mother) and Saddam will move to Canada. Saddam quickly takes over Canada and its up to Terrance and Phillip to save Canada.

Carman’s Mom is still a dirty slut: Matt and Trey open this episode. They are helping the elderly in a rest home. Mephesto is shot before he can reveal the father of Cartman. They rush him to the Hospital and people freak out about the killer. America’s most wanted appears and offers to help. The boys and Chef are snowbound in the hospital and offer to help out. The people at the America’s Most Wanted Studios are snowbound as well and have to take extreme measures to stay alive! In the end we learn the identity of Cartman’s father.

Chickenlover: Matt and Trey open this one as well. We get a Cops type episode involving Barbrady. Somebody is having sex with chickens and we soon learn Barbrady can’t read. He has to leave the force and South Park falls into anarchy. The mayor even comments that he actually kept the peace in town. The boys offer to help out and Cartman takes over patrolling the streets teaching people to “respect my auhoratay!”

Ike’s Wee Wee: Matt and Trey open this one as well. Mr. Mackey gives a substance abuse talk to class. He uses Marijuana as an example and it disappears. He gets fired for being an idiot. Soon his world falls apart and starts drinking and taking drugs. Kyle invites the boys over to Ike’s brisk. To his horror he quickly learns what that means and decides he has to save Ike’s “fireman” After saving him, Kyle learns a secret about Ike.

Conjoined fetus lady: Matt and Trey open this one as well. The boys have PE with Chef. The game of the day? Dodge ball. The boys explain it to Pip and he turns out to be a natural. During the game Kyle gets hurt and has to see the nurse. The rumor is the fact that kids never return. Kyle learns she has a disease called “conjoined twin dyslexia” which means she has a dead fetus attached to her head. The town decides to have an awareness week for her. While this goes on the boys go on to be national champions of dodge ball and head off by bus to China for the world games.

The Mexican staring frog of southern Sri Lanka: Matt and Trey open this one as well. The boys have to write a paper about Viet Nam. They go talk to Jimbo and Ned who tell them tails of Merry-go-rounds, log rides and single handedly destroying the Viet Cong Army. Mr. Garrison sends the class to detention as a result. The boys then decide to make Ned and Jimbo look like idiots by sending them footage of the Mexican staring frog. A side story involves the falling ratings of Jesus and Pals. Jimbo and Ned’s hunting show is killing the show.

City on the edge of forever: Matt and Trey open with a cooking show involving bacon. This was a funny episode involving flashbacks with twists. It starts when the bus gets into an accident. Mrs. Crabtree goes to get help and leaves the children on the bus which is hanging on the edge of a cliff. I liked the Star Trek reference. Mrs. Crabtree finds love and her dream; stand up comedy. While the kids are missing, the parents hold “we are the world” type concert to try and get the kids to come back from having run away.

Summer Sucks: Matt and Trey open again. School closes for the summer and Mr. Hat goes missing. Mr. Garrison flips out. The 4th of July celebration gets a setback as fireworks are outlawed. Ned and Jimbo head to Mexico to get fireworks but are caught since Jimbo can’t lie. To save the 4th, the mayor decides to celebrate by lighting the biggest snake ever made. Cartman takes swimming lessons and learns about the 1st graders do in the pool!

Chef’s Salty Chocolate Balls: Matt and Trey open again and this time the sound is ok. Robert Redford decides to move the Sundance Film Festival to South Park! Chef sets up a booth to sell fudge cookies! “Life getting you down?, fudge it” The resulting health food eating crowds put a great strain on the sewer system which makes everybody’s favorite talking poo sick. Kyle tries to appeal to the crowds to save his friends life.

Chickenpox: Matt and Trey open again and sound is ok. Shelly catches Chickenpox and the parents decide to intientially get their children infected since you have a harder time if you catch Chickenpox when you are older. The boys take revenge by having a streetwalker named “Old Freda” help them give their parents Herpes. Kenny’s dad and Kyle’s dad were once friends when they were kids. Kyle’s mom gets them take an ill-fated fishing trip.

Roger Ebert should lay off fatty foods: Matt and Trey open again. Sound is ok. In a tribute to the old Star Trek episode “Dagger of the mind,” the boys go to the planetarium for a field trip and get programmed to love the planetarium. Cartman enters and wins a contest to be the Cheesy Poof jingle singer.

Clubhouses: Matt and Trey open again. Sound is ok. Bebe starts making her move on Kyle. Stan and Kyle have a race to build a clubhouse so they can play truth or dare. Stan first has to build it and then he has to figure out how to play truth or dare. During this time, Stan’s parents split. Stan’s mom hooks up with Roy and Stan’s dad gets an earring and a fast car. Maybe the magic of clubhouses will come through. There is a funny bit involving the old Cosby show.

Cow Days: A couple wins a game show. Their prize? A trip to South Park for the celebration of Cow Days. The boys try and win a game by throwing a ball through Jennifer Love-Hewlett’s mouth. The game is rigged so the boys need more money. They get Cartman to ride a bull. In the middle of training, he gets hurt and thinks he is a Vietnamese prostitute. During this time the cows discover a monument of a cow that kind of looks like Buda with a clock in his stomach. They decide to form a cult. In the end, the boys declare shenanigans on the carnival people.

Chef Aid: Chef learns that a record company stole a song called “stinky bridges” which he wrote 20 years ago. He asks for credit and gets sued by the record company. Kyle gets his dad to defend him and the record company gets Johnny Cochrane. Things go down hill when the Chewbacca defense is used. The boys decide to try and help him by setting up chef aid. While this goes on somebody is attacking Mr. Twig.

SpookyFish: This episode involves scary vision! The boys run into evil Cartman from another dimension. Stan’s Aunt Flow appears and gives Stan a fish that might be killing people. Stan’s mother thinks Stan is killing people and starts hiding bodies and locks Barbrady in the basement. The boys decide they have to get rid of the goldfish. Evil Stan and Kyle appear to claim their Cartman.

Merry Christmas Charlie Manson: The boys head off to see Cartman’s grandmother in Nebraska. As the sign says “You are now entering Nebraska; Sorry” They arrive and enter a room full of Cartman’s. During, their stay Cartman’s Uncle Howard escapes from Prison with his friend Charles Mansion.

Gnomes: The boys get an assignment from Mr. Garrison. He is accused of not teaching the kids anything as such they must write something. He sets up 2 groups and the boys get tweak. They meet tweaks family and learn that the Harbucks Corporation is going to put the family coffee shop out of business. After getting drinking coffee for the first time, tweak tells them a story about underpants gnomes that steal underpants. They wait up and find out that they wasted time instead of writing the paper. Tweaks father saves the day writing a paper about Corporations destroying small businesses. The paper ends up starting a cause against corporate take overs.

Prehistoric Ice man: The boys discover a man frozen in ice. Dr. Mephesto helps them and discovers he has been frozen since 1996. The boys fight over who owns Gorak. The government appears and wants the ice man as well. They race to get Gorak to Des Moines where everything is 3 years behind!

Okay…this is an improvement over the previous box set…as the films feature a greatly improved picture and sound options..BUT..the foreign sets available though amazon.co.uk have great packaging…very cool book and documentaries NOT included in this set…heck there are NONE on this set. I also note that while the menus look identical to the foreign set (I guess you can tell I own both?)…to watch it with the original language and English subtitles…on the foreign set they are below the picture on these…ON THE PICTURE? ..why? when you have a widescreen do you need to put the subtitles on the images? They didn’t on my import…

this is a pretty half a…ed effort on 20th Century Fox. and I agree the last movie in particular is a joke and insult to Mr Lee. It doesn’t need inclusion.

I notice some folks take issue with “Imports” ..there is a difference between official licensed DVDs and “bootlegs” the items I am discussing are the DVDs available through Amazon.co.uk and are legit and its NOT just that there are extra DVDs for every movie but the picture is alarmingly BETTER (think BLURAY to VHS better) …the US set is worth the 10bucks you pay for it but if you are a real fan of Mr Lee and this series of movies you can own versions which run circles around what we are offered in the USA. This is not the only series of films which find better and more restored or better quality outside of the US…and this isn’t opinion but fact.

What can I say. I bought imports before and got burnt.

Suffice it to say, this is possibly the next best thing to own. Here, you get to actually watch the movies in the original languages, with the exception of Game of Death and Game of Death II, but they were always done in English and is not a big loss.

Having the original Chinese language is great on many fronts. First off, the dubbing that was done before in English was horrendous as it always has been. Plus, some things are changed from the story line when they translate it as they try to match the lip movements to the English words.

Also, because of the translation, this sometimes causes other scenes to be thrown out. Case in point is in Way of the Dragon/Return of the Dragon. When Bruce’s character is standing outside the restaurant with his stomach growling, a man comes out and tells him to go on inside. In the American version, we see Bruce go in and then come out again, apparently after having eaten. Well, an entire scene was missed in where he goes into the restaurant to order food and can’t speak a word of English, but that’s what the waitress speaks in and what the menu is in. The entire exchange is hilarious. It also drives home the point that Bruce’s character is out of place in Rome which makes more sense with many of the scenes in the movie which seemed strange when spoken in the English language.

Now, it would have been nice to have more “extras” other than the filler stuff they have here, which is basically slide shows, trailers and interviews with people. I understand the import versions have much more, but for me, this coupled with the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD makes my Bruce Lee collection complete.

With the Ultimate Collection, you get a new 5.1 English soundtrack but at times, it sounds funny during the fight scenes. Specifically, it sounds like the fight is taking place in a tunnel with the reverberation turned on a little too much I guess. It can be kind of distracting and disorienting with the way it sounds, but it’s not a total loss. Still, the Chinese soundtrack is better. Different music and it just flows better.

The Chinese soundtracks are fine and make the movies much more enjoyable for me because you get to hear the true emotions of the actors. Some have complained about the subtitles being within the movie rather than in the black bars below. This is because these movies are in anamorphic wide screen, so on a HDTV, you’d have no black bars. To me, it’s not that bad. That’s how it would have been in the theaters to begin with anyways.

The picture for each of the movies are great, with the exception of Way of the Dragon. Early on, parts of it are fuzzy and out of focus. Now, this could be due to the camera shot itself because it’s not the entire shot that’s out of focus, but it’s not enough to be completely horrible or unwatchable. But, after you get past that point in Way of the Dragon, the picture is great just like in all the other movies.

The only unwatchable things are the Game of Death (minus the final fights with the REAL Bruce of course) and Game of Death II and we all know why that is. If you really want to see how the Game of Death fights were, get the 2-disc Enter the Dragon DVD which contains at least 30 minutes of the fights in the order they would have happened, including his side kicks that were supposed to come along with him but were left out of the GOD movie for obvious reasons. It’s a very interesting introspective on what Bruce was trying to envision with Game of Death and it’s a shame it was never completed the way he wanted it. Plus, all the interviews up to that point are great, with Chuck Norris, Kareem Abdul Jabar and so many other former students and martial artists that knew and worked with Bruce Lee.

To me, this set is worth 4 stars. It could have gotten 5 stars with some extra content and the strange 5.1 sounds hurt that as well, but overall, this is worth having. Couple this with the 2-disc DVD of Enter the Dragon and it’s completely worth 5 stars.

There is no better bargain in the states than this.

The French adaptation of the classic Alexandre Dumas novel ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ released in ‘99 as a television mini-series is a daunting 6 six hour and 54 minute production that is at times a little challenging to stay with, but overall will prove to be a satisfying and enjoyable watch. Gerard Depardieu is superb as the brooding and calculating Edmund Dantes proving once and for all that he is truly one of the best actors in the world today. The locations and sets are magnificent, the acting excellent and the women beautiful (Julie Depardieu as Valentine, Florence Darel as Camille, Ines Sastre as Princess Haydee and Ornella Muti as the beloved Mercedes).

Word of advice, take your time to watch this feature over a period of several sittings. If you tire at any given point turn it off and come back again later, you’ll enjoy the subtle nuances that permeate this extaordinary film much more if you’re rested and focused.

My rating: 4 1/2 Stars.

This is a superb translation of the Dantes classic, quite possibly the best one to date. Gerarde Depardieu delivers a deep and moving performance as the count, and the star laden international cast does not disappoint either. I must admit it is difficult to perceive the 200+ pound Depardieu as a starving prisoner in the Chateau-Dif, but this is part of where a viewer must suspend belief and let the story be told, and it does this in such a wonderful manner. This is the first version of the story I have ever seen that does not try to abbreviate the tale, or make characters into composites of people from the book in an effort to save time. Albeit there are always some changes in a screen-play from a book, but this so far is the truest adaptation of Dantes work. For those who are learning French, or already know it and want to keep your language skills sharp what better way then to do it while watching a movie you will definitely enjoy. For those intimidated by subtitles, don’t be with this film. The story is so easy to follow you could turn them off and still understand what is going on. You can’t go wrong with this movie it’s a sure winner for any fan of classic stories.

The product description above should read, “VERY, VERY LOOSELY based on Dickens’ classic novel.” Almost everything about this production is wrong and the screenwriter and director should be ashamed of themselves; they have done a terrible disservice to those of us who love the novel and to those who have not yet read it and will mistakenly believe that this DVD tells its story. The worst crime commited by those involved in this travesty is the creation of a “happy ending” to make our hearts ache a little less. What idiotic rubbish! Please, spend your money on a copy of the book, read it, and cry your eyes out; as Dickens intended you to do.

I loved the new version — except I feel that they cut way too much material. I’m guessing BBC concentrates on one major period drama in a given year, and remakes several other “short” versions of other works. Case in point: Jane Austen’s works done in 2008: 1 substantial (Sense & Sensibility) and other very lacking works (Mansfield Park, etc.). That’s too bad.

While this film is reasonably informative and covers the usual topics of concern associated with GM foods, including genetic drift, loss of diversity, and privatization, it feels a little choppy and repetitive. A far better film called “The Future of Food” was made a year earlier; that film is more factual and succinct, and also paints a detailed portrait of the incestuous relationship between Monsanto and the Bush administration. It is also no longer available — makes you wonder!

If you are interested in learning moke about GM foods, this is an OK place to start. However, it is not presented in a very exciting way.
