This nature documentary is a 90-minute mini-version of the much longer Planet Earth produced by the BBC. The latter production took five years to make, had a $25 million budget, and employed the latest in photographic technology. The super slow motion and time lapse techniques are especially impressive. Watching the twelve-month transformation of a forest in 30 seconds is spectacular. Earth focuses on three animal “families”–a polar bear and two cubs, a herd of elephants, and then a mother and baby humpback whale that make a 4,000 mile migration. In between these three stories the film intersperses takes from the longer documentary. My only complaint is that this production oversells the product with music that at times is both melodramatic and cutesy, and a corny narration that is clearly intended for young children (”Time for mom and dad to fix breakfast for junior!”). If there is any nature photography that does not need hype, this big screen version is it. Still, like its longer predecessor, Earth makes for fantastic family viewing.

If you’ve seen Planet Earth already, there is no reason at all to watch this. All this movie is is bits and pieces of Planet Earth. It just makes no sense.

This stirring, innovative docu-drama draws upon interviews, film footage, photographs, and a compelling performance by Corin Redgrave to recreate the life of Cecil Williams, a privileged white man who provided cover to Nelson Mandela during Mandela’s early years of political activity in South Africa. The film’s title refers to Mandela’s masquerade as Williams’ chauffeur, a ruse to elude surveillance by South African authorities, who were keenly aware of the threat posed by Mandela to white rule. Williams and Mandela were eventually arrested together when they momentarily let down their guard during a road trip. The subsequent, cruel years of prison for Mandela and exile for Williams are . . . history. Cecil Williams was a gay man, and this film also provides a fascinating glimpse into the social underworld the he inhabited under the watchful eye of an increasingly paranoid and authoritarian regime; but he lived his life with authenticity and courage under difficult and uncertain circumstances — and utterly without regret. We are indebted to all of those who participated in the production of this film, which reminds us that we each have the power to make a life that is “not just good, but good for something.” Thank you, Greta Schiller, et al., for bringing cinematographic integrity to a life of integrity.

The South African Constitution has been justifiably lauded as one of the best examples of a modern liberal constitution, with not only minority rights entrenched therein, but also gay rights. When one looks at the lack of tolerance of gays on most of the African continent, notably just north of South Africa in Zimbabwe, then the importance of this film cannot be over-estimated. It might not suit some of those in power now in South Africa, but gays are a part of South African life, have always been a part of South African life and always will be a part of the rainbow nation. The film is also very well made and quite amusing.

4. She’s determined

5. They’re divorced

6. They’re going treasure hunting

7. You can guess the ending before watching the opening credits

In other words, there’s nothing new about this light and ditzy treasure hunting romp that plays heavily on stereotyping and McConaughey’s shirtless bod.

The legend behind the treasure is interesting enough. Forty chests of gold and jewels, destined to be a dowry fit for an eighteenth century queen, was lost without a trace during the hurricane season of 1715. Finn (McConaughey) and Tess (Hudson) had been searching for it for years, until an accidental discovery clues them in that they’re finally on the right track.

With the exception of Donald Sutherland, the movie loses momentum whenever the supporting actors are on-screen and the burden of the caricaturized characters sink the movie even deeper than the plotline.

The action scenes were good, especially at the end, and although there is violence, most of it is off camera. A couple of swear words and a few naughty scenes make for a PG-13 movie that should be found guilty of breach of promise.

“Fool’s Gold” Directed by Andy Tennant and Screen play by John Claflin.

Unlucky treasure hunter Benjamin Finnegan (Mathew McConaughey) has been on the trail of a treasure for years at the expense of everything including his marriage to soon to be ex-wife Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson). Finn has recently uncovered a new clue that has reinvigorated his desire to find the treasure however it took the destruction of his last and most important possession, his boat, to find this clue. His debts to the islands local “Gangster” have been called in because it has been discovered that Finn has no means by which to repay what he owes. Finn winds up getting Tess re-interested in hunting for the treasure with his new clue and with the help of Tess’s new boss multi millionaire Nigel Honeycutt (Donald Sutherland), they just may have a chance of finding it…….

I actually enjoyed “Fool’s Gold”. It should be obvious that this isn’t a movie that is seeking Oscar Gold but merely something intended to be fun to watch. As far as the mood or tone of the movie I would say it is a cross between or somewhere in the middle of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (Full Screen Edition)” and “Sahara (Widescreen Edition)” or a less serious “Into the Blue (Widescreen Edition)” and if you like any of those you will likely like this as well.

The Good: There were some enjoyable if slightly hokey comedic moments. The story, although full of plot holes, was enjoyable. Mathew McConaughey and Kate Hudson were good on screen together again. Maybe not quite as “on” as they were in “How to Loose a Guy in 10 Days”, but still good.

The Bad: If you cant get with the fact that the movie isn’t really intended to be taken seriously most of it won’t work. The comedy will likely seem forced or trite, the plot holes will likely bug you and the lack of believability will probably finish it off for you. None of these were a problem for me.

Overall: Is this movie full of plot holes? Yes. Is it believable? No. Is it likely to be an Oscar contender? No. Is it fun to watch? If you take this movie for what it is, an action/adventure/comedy and just go with it you will likely enjoy it. Give it a try!

This is the third box set of the original Transformers series, and the third one I have purchased. Very happy with it.

This is, of course, for the second half of Season 2. I’d actually forgotten how good several of these episodes are until watching them again. Tons of new characters show up, the plotlines get more varied, and there is action at every turn.

There are a great many animation mistakes (voices out of the wrong mouths, Autobots appearing with Decepticons, incorrect coloring, etc) but each and every one of these was present originally, and I remember them well upon seeing them again.

The restoration process did another fine job this time, though a few episodes have a large amount of dirt and dust on the film. This is probably due to the sorry state of storage they had been subjected to over the years, as nobody expected that this series would be as lasting as it has turned out to be.

Keep in mind that the episodes are aired in Production Order, which is not neccessarily the same order they were aired in. This causes the Combaticons, for example, to appear in an episode before the episode where they are created is shown. It also sees several episodes air inbetween two episodes that are a continuation of each other. A minor thing, but enough to be noted.

We still need more special features. At least the interviews this time were with people who worked on the classic series, but I’d still love to see commercials for the old toys and perhaps scenes that got cut from episodes due to time constraints. Maybe even character profiles would be nice, and take up little disc space as well.

Overall, I loved this set, just as I have with the other ones. Some great stuff in this one, reminding me of how I got so into this stuff when it was new. This is lightyears better than ANY Transformers stuff that has followed it, even to the modern day series.

I suppose Season 3 will follow with a set or two, but they feature the post-movie characters, which lose a lot of the charm that the original series has with Optimus Prime and Megatron’s almost respectful arch rivalry, and Starscream’s desire to overthrow Megatron and gain power of his own. But it will still be a welcome edition, and allow Transformers fans to actually own the entire US series when all is said and done.

Thanks again, Rhino, for bringing one of my favorite things from my youth back to life yet again.

The second half of The Transformers’ second season is probably the oddest stretch of episodes of the entire series. From the environmentally themed “The Golden Lagoon” to space-faring episodes like “Child’s Play” and the episodes with the gestalts (or combiners, if you will), there’s a lot of variety here.

The episodes are again restored in fine fashion, although there’s a few more moments in this set (as opposed to the last) where Rhino had to borrow from the broadcast masters due to re-takes. The commercial bumpers are now the “correct” Season 2 ones featuring newer characters like Cosmos and Thrust. The sound is also re-done like the other two sets, and is again excellent.

The Special Features, which consist of interviews with writer/associate producer/story editor Flint Dille and writer Buzz Dixon, are great, and both certainly deliniate the series’ shift from the lighter episodes of Season 1 to the darker, more mature fare of Season 3, while providing further insight about how cartoons were made during the ’80s, and how Sunbow helped to change that for the better.

Without doubt, this set is worth every penny, and Rhino should definitely consider releasing all of the Sunbow series (TF, G.I. Joe, Jem, The Inhumanoids, The Visionaries, and so on) on DVD ASAP.

First Time Felon is the true story of Greg Yance, at one time a high-ranking and criminally successful member of the Vice Lords street gang living in inner city Chicago. As one of his gang responsibilities, he oversees a crew of “Westside Chicago” drug dealers. During a police sweep, Yance is arrested and found in possession of heroin. While awaiting trial, he is housed in the infamous Cook County Jail where his “Set” is outnumbered and besieged by rival gang members and he witnesses firsthand, acts of violence that he had never experienced before. After being saddled with an inept and overworked Public Defender, he is plead out “guilty as charged,” and owing to the large quantity of narcotics, is sentenced to a mandatory 5 years incarceration in Statesville Prison without the possibility of parole. Due to the fact that this is Yance’s first felony arrest (i.e. “First Time Felon”) the judge allows him to choose the option of successfully completing a three month boot camp program and probation in lieu of serving the full prison sentence. While in boot camp Yance is subjected to the unaccustomed and rigorous daily ritual of the program, a brutal (and brutally honest) prison guard and a rival gang member who has vowed to, and attempts to kill him. With steely determination Yance overcomes these and other obstacles including a devastating flood, and rehabilitates himself in the process. Once graduated and released from the program, Yance vows never to return, but faces adversity and discrimination in his quest to find employment and stay away from the temptations of his former life. After several years of hardship and many justifications to return to the streets, Yance holds true to his vow, perseveres, and finds a career as a county counselor for at risk youth.

The story demonstrates the dire consequences of life on the street and the severe reality of incarceration. The main focus of the narrative is that no matter what your environment, with dedication, self-discipline and persistence, every person is capable of change and self-improvement, and if you are determined and refuse to accept failure, all goals are achievable.

Although this film demonstrates in graphic detail the stark realities, bleak conditions and hopelessness faced by inner city youth, and at times utilizes coarse language to emphasize a point; the story of Greg Yance has an uplifting and inspirational message for everyone and should be viewed by teachers and students alike. The last quarter of the film details Mr. Yance hitting “rock bottom” despite an exemplary effort to succeed, then in a moment of clarity, avoiding a fatal mistake by recognizing the true principles he discovered during his confinement.

This is a type of movie someone usually looks at on the shelf and then passes it up for something else because they’ve never heard of it and it isnt one of those highly advertised block busters. If you fall in that category and cant make up your mind about spending a little money and time on this movie… stop thinking and go for it! You wont be sorry. This is a VERY good movie especially if you like heart warming and inspirational themes.

Buy,Download, Or Stream First Time Felon! Click Here

Basically, this movie is about a young adult(Age between 17 and 21) that gets into trouble for selling drugs. He is given the choice of going to jail for five years or going to a military style boot camp for I think three months…. Of course he chooses the bootcamp. The movie shows a great example of how behavioral bootcamps are ran. The bootcamp part of the movie takes up only half of the play time though. The other half shows the struggles of how hard it is to go back to the same problematic environment and use what was learned and how easily it is to fall back into old behaviors due to poverty and lack of opportunity due to being a felon. For example, it shows how hard it is to get a “second chance” in the job market being a ex-convict.

I agree with the past posters that this movie would be great to show in an educational setting especially college…. maybe even a high school psychology/sociology class. With that said dont take that as this movie being like a documentary… its not. With out a doubt this can be watched for just pure entertainment.

So give this a try if you can’t make up your mind. Again you wont be sorry.

I decided to order a copy of this DVD when my son was still under a year. It was definitely too advanced for him then, but now at 20 months this is BY FAR his favorite movie. He watches most of the DVD which includes little kids/babies in the intro, Old MacDonalds Farm, an ABC of animals, and sections on different kinds of animal (furry faced animals, animals with fins and flippers, etc. etc.). He has even started answering some of the questions (what animal makes this sound, etc.)–so it’s a bit more interactive for him.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Brainy Baby - Animals! Click Here

This is a great DVD to add when your child is getting too old for the Baby Einstein videos because it offers a lot more information. For example, it gives solid information such as “Did you know a cow has 4 stomachs?” and goes over the names of baby animals and groups of animals.

This definitely gets 5 stars from my son (and me) these days!!

This video is great in that it shows a very wide veriety of animals. However its hard for kids to pick out the actual name of each animal from the rest of the information they give on each one. I would prefer if they show the cow, say COW and then go on to tell about it. But they show a cow and go right into their speech about cows. My son didn’t like it at first, but now that he’s learned his animals from books, he really likes to watch it and point out all the different animals he knows.

Let me start this review off by saying that if you’ve been disappointed in the past with the lack of Power Rangers DVDs, their content, and the quality, you have no need to fear any longer.

The plot: The year is 2020 and Earth is now home to humans and aliens alike. While 99% of the aliens live in peace, there’s always 1% that can’t. To deal with them, Earth enlists the help of a “Galactic Police Group” known as S.P.D., or “Space Patrol Delta.” Early on S.P.D. is faced by an invasion force, and sends their A-Squad to the front lines, leaving only their B-Squad cadets to defend Earth.

As one would assume, the B-Squad Cadets are then given Ranger powers and the real story begins…

Buy,Download, Or Stream Power Rangers SPD - Joining Forces! Click Here

The show is well done from both a technical and artistic point of view, especially for a Power Rangers series. In the first episode simply titled “Beginnings” which is an hour long, we see three cadets who are still green behind the ears. These guys are not your perfect little Power Rangers the way they were in the older shows. One is fairly nervous, one is a bit ditzy, and one is naïve and obnoxiously arrogant. Likewise the final two Power Rangers aren’t even your standard “goody-goody civilians” as in past years - they’re street thieves! Clearly this group has its’ vices, and they make the character’s seem more realistic.

Following “Beginnings” (a 2-part episode) we see episode #3 which is called “Confronted.” This episode is probably one of the weaker entries into the series, but it does have some high points, such as the Red and Blue Rangers’ constantly locking heads. I mentioned an arrogant and naïve character before; that’s Sky, the Blue Ranger. While his counterpart in Red isn’t quite perfect either, he’s far less obnoxious.

The next episode is called “Walls.” While I find the episode interesting, and highly enjoyable, I repetitively find myself wanting to scream the words “SHUT UP SKY!” at my TV. Apparently this was the director’s intent as the final scene of this episode has him scrubbing the outside of the Ranger’s base with a toothbrush a la boot camp. I enjoyed that scene quite a lot, especially after Sky’s constant kvetching about not being the Red Ranger.

The last episode on the disc is titled “Dogged.” While it had the potential to be the worst episode of the season, it’s just the opposite. It’s funny, it’s tragic, and it’s one of the most well filmed and well-written episodes in the shows’ history. The moral too the story is done in a very subtle way and looks more like a plot from “Star Trek” than from Power Rangers.

Technical Features: The menus on this DVD are better than that of past Power Rangers DVDs. Last season’s menus were probably the worst I’ve seen in awhile. Disney owed us and they came through. The motion menus on this disc rival those of major motion pictures, including the new Star Wars Trilogy DVD Box. The average DVD Collector would be pleased.

In addition the Disc is encoded with Dolby Surround Sound. Playback on my TV through an S-Video cable using 4.1 THX Certified Speakers really pulls the surround sound to the foreground and shows how well this disc was made.

Extras: If you bought the early Power Rangers Ninja Storm DVDs, you probably scoffed at the extras, which were a bit of a joke, even for the target demographic. If you bought the Power Rangers Dino Thunder DVDs you probably felt the same way and wondered why two episodes of the previous season were deemed “extras” rather than a new disc. With Power Rangers S. P. D. however, the extras are pretty good. The first is based on those old “Join the ARMY” PSAs, and relates to joining S. P. D. - Disney includes a website URL for anyone interested. This is fairly humorous and I confess, I did enjoy it. The second extra is a “Zord Simulator,” which is similar to an arcade style video game. Most people will probably complain that we still don’t have deleted scenes, or “standard” extras, but given the target audience, this is probably a nice extra, and it beats the Dino Thunder virtual trading cards that couldn’t be traded with anyone.

Packaging:

This is admittedly this DVDs weak spot; the packaging isn’t even on par with what some fans have done for their collections. It looks like a five minute Photoshop job and for such a well-done DVD I would have expected better. In addition my first copy of this Disc (I purchased two of them.) was loose in its’ case, a common problem with Buena Vista Home Entertainment DVDs. Especially Power Rangers DVDs which I’ve had to return on five occasions due to the disc not being pushed all the way into the center hub and being scratch upon purchase. Disney should fix this on future releases. Shake the case when you get the disc or you may find a nasty surprise when it’s all scratched up as you open it. (Disney will replace the Discs for free though if you call them and pay for the shipping as well so it’s not so much a loss as it is a nuisance.)

Additional notes:

When watching this DVD, long-time Power Rangers fans should be ready to look for some serious “in-jokes” - younger fans will appreciate them too if they view the Power Rangers Generations block on ABC Family. Here are a few things to watch out for:

- The A-Squad Power Rangers have the helmets from Power Rangers in Space with a slight modification made to them.

- Fans of the shows’ Japanese counterpart will recognize the character of “Doggie Cruger” as a nod to his Japanese counterpart, “Doggie Kruger.”

- The same man who wrote the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers theme song, Ron Aaron Wasserman, composed the theme song.

The Good: Five episodes on the first DVD for once. The show is excellent, and the DVD is better than I expected.

The Bad: Disney is still making “Mini-movies” rather than standard episode. The opening and ending credits have been lifted from every episode with the exception of Beginnings (opening credits) and Dogged (ending credits) having one set of credits. This is really a style issue, but it annoys me.

The Ugly: A packaging issue that has been a problem since Prelude to a Storm was release is still plaguing Power Rangers DVDs. I seriously hope Disney is trying to fix this, as it’s a pretty common flaw.

Final verdict: If you’re a Power Rangers fan, buy this DVD. If you’re a parent, you won’t be disappointed and you may find yourself enjoying this disc as well. DVD Collectors will most certainly have mixed feelings on this disc though, while young children and teenagers will most likely enjoy it. This is the best Power Rangers DVD release to date, satisfying younger and older fans alike. If you like this series, I recommend checking out Power Rangers Time Force which amazon.com also has for sale. It’s only on VHS, but it’s similar in style to Power Rangers S.P.D.

As far as Power Ranger movies go, this one ranks right up there……according to my 5 year old son. If you need to get the dishes, laundry or cleaning done, this one will keep your son glued to the tv for at least an hour! I’m not really a fan, but he is and it is one thing that I know will keep him occupied with no complaints!

Written around 700 AD and being of unknown authorship, “Beowulf” may be one of the purest fantasies ever told–it was one of the first to tell the story of a warrior who fought demons and a dragon. In the hands of director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriters Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary, the story transcends what we might have envisioned when reading the epic poem. This latest film adaptation is a triumph of classic storytelling, giving us a both hero to root for and monsters to be afraid of; it’s a story told in the language of entertainment, having the power to capture its audience with compelling characters and breathtaking visuals. It’s an honest to goodness fable that tells it like it is, completely free of long-winded setups and complicated details.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beowulf! Click Here

Relying on the same motion capture technique he utilized in “The Polar Express,” Zemeckis has crafted an entirely computer generated film that has an appropriately surreal look. This is especially true of the characters, which exist in a gray area between the realistic and the fantastic; they don’t look phony by any means, but they’re not completely authentic, either. I suppose part of this can be blamed on the limits of computer technology, which still isn’t able to fool an audience despite major advances. The thing is, I don’t think the film should have looked too realistic, simply because it’s telling an unrealistic story. “Beowulf” is a purely imaginative piece, and as such, the film needed a purely imaginative look. Zemeckis chose to make the entire thing one big special effect–there are no individual effects that enhance live-action scenes.

Taking place in the sixth century, Ray Winstone voices the title character with the perfect mix of pride, arrogance, and youthful impulsiveness. He also gives Beowulf a hard-edged masculinity that’s just as expected as it is cliché. Upon hearing that a monster is terrorizing a Danish kingdom, Beowulf and his Geat men come to the rescue. His motives are purely ego driven–he only wants to fight in glorious battle and be remembered for it. Stories of his past battles make this clear because they’re all so dramatic, downright boastful. Basically, it’s obvious that he’s exaggerating practically everything he says to make himself look more like a hero. All arrogance aside, he does believe himself capable of killing the creature that attacked the mead hall of the drunken, disgraced King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) and the quiet, suspicious Wealthow (Robin Wright Penn).

Buy,Download, Or Stream Beowulf! Click Here

This creature is Grendel (Crispin Glover), a character that, like Frankenstein’s Monster, is hideous yet pathetic. He’s a grotesque sight to behold: he’s massive, hunched over, and deformed, bearing little if any resemblance to a human being. His soft, pitiful voice–which speaks in a Scandinavian tongue–is pretty much his only connection to the rest of us. Here’s a character that’s truly nightmarish in appearance. And when his anger is added to the mix, it gets even worse; he loses control at the sounds of merrymaking, forcing him to retreat from his cave and attack the mead hall. As he breaks through the wooden door, the orange flames in the fire pit become a cold blue that engulf everything surrounding it. Beowulf is able to lure Grendel back by making his men sing, after which the two engage in fierce combat. Because Grendel has no armor or weapons, Beowulf decides to “fight him on equal terms” by stripping completely naked. How this was necessary, I have no idea, but I guess it doesn’t really matter.

It’s only after the battle is finished that Beowulf learns of Grendel’s mother (Angelina Jolie), a seductive water demon whose feminine curves are accented by shifting slivers of gold paint. Her hair ends as a living, tentacle-like ponytail, and her feet are naturally high heeled. When Beowulf first meets her, he carries a golden horn given by Hrothgar as a gift; in the presence of Grendel’s mother, the horn glows like molten metal, just as the water she emerges from becomes a phosphorescent blue. In this strange yet magically erotic atmosphere, she temps Beowulf with promises of fame and fortune. At what price, no one can say, but considering how fiercely protective she was of her son, I think it’s safe to assume that it’ll be quite high.

When the film flashes forward by a number of years, signs of Beowulf’s age are not the only differences–his views on glory, battle, and fame have changed, forcing him to wonder if his years of arrogance were worth it. At one time, he would scream, “I am Beowulf!” at the drop of a hat, but now, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to do that anymore. It doesn’t help that he’s keeping a big secret, one he’s held onto for many years. The arrival of a monstrous fire-breathing dragon brings his past back up to the surface, and he must face it whether or not he’s ready to.

But to face his past is to redefine what it means to be a hero. The young Beowulf believed it was all about winning battles, but the older Beowulf begins to feel that there’s something more to it, something that doesn’t rely on physical brute force and bloodshed. In Zemeckis’ film, Beowulf is just like any character on a Hero’s Journey: he matures as his quest nears its end. He looks back on what he’s been through and is able to draw strength from it. This well-established narrative formula is one of the things that make “Beowulf” an incredibly enjoyable film; it follows the most basic rules of fantasy storytelling, which is both necessary and effective. This movie thoroughly accomplishes what it set out to accomplish–it’s an engaging, exciting, and highly artistic vision, made with style and precision. Odin be praised.

Beowulf is a great story, it would not have lasted over thousand years if it wasn’t. This 2007 all CGI version deviates considerably from the original story’s truest and perhaps even its most enduring elements. The villain Grendel is portrayed as if we have the opportunity to sympathize with him. I remember upon his first attack in this film thinking that the Grendel from the epic poem would never have been so bold as to attack while his enemies were not asleep. Never would he come face to face with King Hrothgar on his throne. He is a cowardly and vile monster. I also remember studying Beowulf and thinking that this is the ultimate pagan hero. Courageous even if to a fault, boisterously politicizing himself to the gods by listing off each of his own unearthly tasks, challenging any evil no matter what it may be, even if it looks exactly like a naked Angelina Jolie. Most of all, he was to be a shining example of pride and honesty. It’s funny, until now I never realized how I may have idolized Beowulf during my High School readings but just like those young pagan lads a thousand years ago listening to tales of the great warrior around a giant bonfire, I guess in a way I did and still do. The Beowulf we get here is tricked and tormented and his time as king is essentially based on deception. He is flawed in ways that make him less a hero.

There is something to admire in that fearless definition of heroism held up high in the original tale. Something even more endearing about this ultimate clash between good and evil. Something got lost in the transition from ancient Anglo-Saxon scribes to the capable pens of Neil Gaiman and Roger Avery, who wrote the solid but fundamentally flawed screenplay. Their writing makes for a great popcorn movie but I’m quite sure English scholars are not so impressed. In fact, this will definitely not and should not be shown by teachers or professors to compliment the study of this epic poem.

Still, Beowulf as a film is a back-to-back feast for the eyes. It is a beautiful film and I also believe its style to be a worthy standard to uphold for other action filmmakers in the years to come. I was worried right off that bat that Beowulf would be a two-hour video game cut scene, but it manages to transcend that judgement with time. The characters may be quasi-cartoon but they still hold more spirit than many cartoons have the ability to by far. Ray Winstone is Beowulf and his demeanor is nearly perfect. Anthony Hopkins and John Malkovich, as Hrothgar and Unferth respectively, both shine through their computerized characters more than enough. Both actors bring the overall performances in this film to attention, as both are just that good at their craft. Crispin Glover manages Grendel fantastically and the Grendel here is quite visually satisfying considering I’ve never had a strong enough imagination to picture Grendel myself based on the descriptions in literature. Angelina Jolie is certainly good enough for her role, as flawed as it may be. Grendel’s mother is actually the character changed most of all, but as a separate villain from the epic poem, the character is not only crucial to Gaiman and Avery’s story, but actually quite effective. Oh yes, and what epic film with bearded warriors would be complete without everyone’s favorite brute from the early middle ages, Brendan Gleeson (as Wiglaf)?!

Overall, it is a tribute in some ways to the great story but on the other hand the way it sacrifices the purity of its characters just to create a convenient story, a gripping visual style, and a well-packaged blockbuster troubles me enough to only give a slight recommendation. Also, wait for this on blu-ray if you want it (if it ever comes in that format), I really can’t see any reason not to unless you need it right away. There is an HD DVD version available.

It’s almost impossible to review this as just a movie, as it is, to movie buffs at least, such a curio piece. As everyone knows, the screenplay, written by Arthur Miller, started out as a tribute to his wife, Marilyn Monroe, but proved to be the death knell for their marriage. Though this looks like a “Western”, it is far from it. It is an almost obscene look into the coming together of a group of lost souls who have nothing left to lose. This John Houston film was famously fraught with problems, many related to M.M.’s real life breakdown, and went over budget, and became, at that time, the most expensive black & white film to date, a dubious distinction. That Miller based “Roslyn” on Marilyn is now well known, a portrait at once flattering and brutally honest. If there’s any doubt that Roslyn is M.M., watch for the scene when Marilyn opens a locker , in she & Clarks little “love cottage”, there are well known glamour pin-ups of the real life Marilyn hung inside, which “Roslyn” refers to as “just some old pictures of me.” Also the scene of M.M. & Gable, as they awaken one morning, and she is seen nude from the back, is one Marilyn fought for, wanting her breast, which was visible in the rushes, kept in the final film. This was unheard of at that time, and was cut out of the final print. At the time, M.M. commented: “I love to do things the censors won’t pass, after all, what are we here for, just to stand around and let it pass us by?… Gradually, they’ll let down the censorship, sadly, probably not in my lifetime “, a prophetic comment from a woman who was ahead of her time. Though she drove John Houston to distraction during the filming, he years later commented: “Marilyn was as fine an actress as any I ever worked with… she just reached down within herself and pulled her own emotions out, it was real.” This film , aside from Clark Gable, also stars good M.M. friend Montgomery Clift, another real life misfit, also good M.M. friend Eli Wallach, both fellow alumni of The Actors Studio, and the fabulous Thelma Ritter, who seems to be the only one capable of holding it together. At the films release, during Marilyns now famous scene in the desert, where she lashes out at the brutality of “the men” as they capture a horse for slaughter, apparently many in the theatres laughed out loud at this unacceptable version of their Marilyn, which is very sad. I have always found this scene devestating, and only shows the struggle she had to face, in her attempts to grow as an actress, and not be confined by peoples limited vision of her. Contrary to popular belief, this film was not a total artistic failure, and received many positive reviews at it’s opening. The New York Tribune: “Here Miss Monroe is magic but not a living pin-up dangled in skin tight satin, and can anyone deny that in this film, these performers are at their best?” New York Daily News: “Gable has never done anything better on screen, nor has Miss Monroe.” The fact that Gable died two weeks after shooting wrapped, and that Marilyn never completed another film, only seals the legend surrounding this films making. In hindsight, it was truly the end of an era. If you want a fascinating read on the making of this film, try and get the long out of print “The Story Of The Misfits”, by James Goode. Published in 1963, it’s a day by day chronicle of the films making, and, though only a year after M.M.’s tragic death, handles her memory with total respect…the legend had already begun. This sad, but ultimatley hope filled little drama, filmed in the almost lifeless desert, is maybe not for the viewer looking for lots of excitement and action. But if you’re a serious viewer who can appreciate brilliantly subtle performances, starring two of filmdoms biggest legends… in a movie steeped in Hollywood folklore, then you’ll appreciate this film. How fitting that their final scene has them riding off, heading “for that big star.”

This once nearly forgotten movie, the last film of Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe is now coming forward in the lexicon of film history as an underrated gem. Universally misunderstood for the most part at the time it came out it is clear now that this film was at least five of six years ahead of it’s time. It fits in more comfortably with films of the late 60’s and early 70’s.
The screenplay by Miller is one of his most striking works. A story of a group of people lost in the wide expanse of the West in search of the discarded souls of their misspent lives. The film’s beautiful cinematography by Russell Metty stands out as superb artistry at the demise of the black and white era. It shimmers with the silver of the deep expanse of the desert and the flat grays and blacks of the distant mountains upon which the last act of the story plays. The music by Alex North is among his best work and gives a savage punch to the aerial scenes and the round up at the end of the wild mustangs.

Montgomery Clift, by now sliding into the last years of his life is touching in his performance of Perce. His broken cowboy with the broken heart is almost painful to watch. His phone call home to his mother is among some of his best work. Eli Wallach gives a strong deeply moving portrait of Guido who has lost his wife, his way, and his humanity. He shines in his scene with Monroe where he asks her to save him. When she can’t to at least say “Hello Guido”.
Thelma Ritter is, well, Thelma Ritter in yet another of her excellent character roles. Ritter is the master of the one line wisecrack but here as Isobel she laces the cracks with an underlying sadness and vulnerability.
As Gay Langland, Clark Gable gives what I consider to be the best performance of his career. It was a brave move for Gable to take on the role of what on the surface seems another one of his typical macho made to fit parts. But as the story unfolds from Arthur Miller’s pen Gay reveals that beneath his gruff, not a care in the world, cowboy is a man in deep pain and despair at his losses. The world has left him behind. Abandoned by his children the drunken Gable breaks so violently it is a shock to watch the great man fall. This is Clark Gable at his finest ever.
Marilyn Monroe gives an astounding performance as Roslyn Tabler the newly divorced dancer. A damaged woman who finds in the company of these three men something to finally believe in, something to stand up and fight for, she finds life. It is a performance ground out in part from her own person and experience and in part by the director John Huston and the editor George Tomasini who helped a nearly destroyed Monroe create her stunning Roslyn. This, her last performance is her best and the true example of the collaborative creation that film really is. That Marilyn under the circumstances of her life at that time could be so good is a testament to her talent as an actress and a star. Watch her when she is listening to the other actors. This is where she shines; this is the true mark of a great screen actor. To be able to listen and draw you into the inner life of the character through that deceptively simple act of listening and reaction is her gift to the audience. Her scene with Monty in back of the bar, sitting on a pile of trash, her afore mentioned scene with Eli Wallach in the speeding car. These are but a few of the examples in this film of her great talent. In the 1950’s and early 60’s there were only a handful of great young actresses in film, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe where at the summit of the small mountain.
