I am floored. I didn’t believe it was possible for Pixar to surpass Toy Anecdote, but it has. A sophisticated treat for adults and teens, a cuddly romance for the juice-box station, this comedic science fiction thriller romance (really!) takes the company to a unusual, more dilapidated level. Filled with artistry, depth, meaning and a lot of humor, WALL-E is a masterpiece. Where Cars was a kid’s movie with added adult themes, this is an adult movie with added value for children.

DIALOGUE SCHMIALOGUE

Before I saw WALL-E I had read about the lack of dialogue, and how it might be a dangerous go for Pixar to earn a film with characters that don’t talk in a ragged sense. Well, trash that. The most emotionally worthy scenes in this movie are those with the LEAST dialogue. Fully developed and indeed almost human, the two main characters are Wall-E himself (the letters stand for Kill Allocation Load Lifter-Earth Class; there’s also a WALL-A) and EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), two machines in admire.

After about a half hour I was wondering if Pixar could continue to pull off this less-is-more plan for the rest of the film — then the two robots started playing Pong! Such imaginative screenplay carries the film to what should be a Best Recount nomination. Seriously.

A TOUCHING STORY

WALL-E is a lonely tiny robotic trash compactor who was left tedious after Earth was abandoned some 700 years earlier. He has been methodically cleaning up the trash-ridden planet ever since, and harboring a puny plant he has found among the garbage. Eve, meanwhile, lives on the gigantic spaceship Axiom, which is also home to the elephantine, blob-like remains of the human rush. She is a probe robot that flies to Earth to decide if the planet is ready for habitation. WALL-E takes one gaze at the streamlined, angelic Eve and falls in worship.

It didn’t retract long for me to plunge in adore with the dinky robot. As soon as he giggled (after his pet cockroach happy him) I was zigzag. This hardworking rusty guy with his exiguous home fleshy of detached treasures is so poignant. His lonely life is so human. Eve is honest as likable, but distinguished more sleek. Arrive the waste comes a heartbreaking moment when a key character seems to lose all personality, all self. So well done, it made me judge of how families must feel when a loved one disappears inside him- or herself with Alzheimer’s disease.

All ends well, of course. As the credits roll, the artwork illustrates how everyone and everything lives happily after ever.

AN ADULT MEANING

For adults, WALL-E is not so great about a cute tiny robot as it is about the future of man. What happens when humans become such creatures of the consumer culture, so fleshy they can’t even stand up without assistance, living literally on auto-pilot, that they do nothing but win cheap merchandise, stuff their faces at the Regurgitated Food Buffet and lie around watching video screens? Can they ever earn befriend to the land and place their souls free? Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young asked that demand decades ago; Pixar asks it today.

There is even a sly political reference. Broadcasting a message to the passengers of the spaceship, the CEO of monster corporation Pick ‘n’ Gargantuan — played in live-action by the inimitable Fred Willard, and named Shelby Forthright — says they will be continuing on their never-ending, hopeless flee to nowhere because they must “Finish the course!” Hmmm, haven’t I heard a president exercise that line?

EXTRA TOUCHES

WALL-E has so many extraordinary touches! After the petite robot is charged using his solar panels, he “turns on” with a sound any Macintosh owner will search for. The robot’s calm objects, grand like the thingamabobs of The Cramped Mermaid’s Ariel, are things that are uniquely human: bubble wrap, an iPod, a Rubics cube, a singing plastic trophy fish and — blink and you’ll miss it — a carrousel horse from Walt Disney World. Especially inspired are the two things on this future Earth that are totally indestructible: a cockroach and Twinkies.

Stay for the credits. Recalling cave drawings, hieroglyphics, Monet and Van Gogh paintings and early computer graphics, the progressive sequence of art within them sneaks in the history of dialogue-free storytelling.

ANIMATED? REALLY?

The peer of the movie is hard to represent. In one scene, when WALL-E and EVE are investigating a section of bubble wrap, you can’t teach it is an engaging film. It actually appears to be live-action. Likewise, the outer position scenes have the same level of realism as any of the Star Wars movies. The trailing tower of squiggly smoke that’s left unhurried by a launching spacecraft re-creates the Florida sky of a Status Shuttle open to a T. For the most fragment, it is only when humans are portrayed that you are consciously aware that what you’re watching was generated on circuit boards, not in cameras.

I’ve seen the movie three times, first in digital projection and then from a film projector. The digital showing was remarkable sharper, which made all the realistic touches far easier to indulge in.

MOVIE REFERENCES

It’s sure the Pixar folks are movie lovers; there are so many cinematic inspirations in WALL-E that I lost count. The “Place On Your Sunday Clothes” sequence from Hello, Dolly! shows up — literally — maybe half a dozen times. (Disney World fans may also remember the song as one of the background melodies along Main Street U.S.A.) The Axiom spaceship’s computer is clearly an homage to HAL from 2001: A Region Odyssey; that film’s signature overture “Also Sprach Zarathustra” plays at a key moment. WALL-E himself combines the purrs of E.T., the attitude of R2-D2 and the moves of Charlie Chaplin. There’s a brief reference to Gigantic.

OPENING CARTOON

The movie is preceded by a Pixar short, “Presto,” that had the entire audience I was sitting with in stitches. Its plot: When a magician neglects to feed his bunny a carrot, an escalating concern results. It’s so nice to begin a feature with a cartoon. I wish other studios serene did it. (Disney fans will sign the magician’s hat is similar to the one old by Mickey Mouse in Fantasia.)

SOUVENIR TOY

Might as well budget it in: if you grasp your kids to peek this you’re going to be buying a souvenir. Here’s the coolest one I’ve found on Amazon: U Articulate Wall-E.

Will it ever rush out? This continuous font of imagination from Pixar? With WALL-E, it obvious doesn’t search for like it.

For those of you who belief another Austin Powers movie would become nothing more than a forgotten sequel, I have two words for you: Plump Bastard. The Introduction of another character played by Mike Myers only makes this sequel better. You must remember that Jay Roach and company are working with whatever they please; as long as Mike Myers goes along with it. And as long as Mike likes it, it’ll be great.

In this funny comedy, we are introduced to more modern and big characters such as: Mini-me (played by Verne Troyer), Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham), and a younger version of Number 2 played by Catch Lowe. There are so many laughs in the movie I don’t even know where to initiate. How about Mustafa’s reappearance or maybe Stout Bastard trying to eat Mini-me. They honest never cessation. Again, we have a similar storyline along with a similar ending: 30…29…28… you come by the opinion. I have a feeling that Mike’s not done quite yet in producing laughs. I’m really looking forward to Austin Powers 3. It’ll be smashing, baby!

Anyway, that’s enough of that. If you liked the first Austin Powers movie you’ll definitly like this one. Heck, you might even delight in it more. Otherwise, if you didn’t like the first movie you won’t like this one either. Give it a shot, it’s worth it.

One more thing, obtain positive you see to the very very ruin of the credits to fetch out what actually happens to Mustafa. It’s too gracious to miss.

You must have been living under a rock for the last three or so years if you are not familiar with Austin Powers and Doctor Immoral and their abundance of instantly recognisable catchphrases. The sequel to the very current Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery takes the ideas from the first film and turns them on its head. Instead of having two people from the sixties living in the nineties, we send Austin and Dr. Harmful (who have now acclimatised to the nineties) befriend to the gradual 1960s. Care For it or hate it, The Inspect Who Shagged me is one of the funniest films ever made. The DVD is also very noble, with an satisfactory audio and visual digital transfer. The extra features are spectacular, with hilarious directors commentary, deleted scenes that you wonder why they were dropped from the final film and a astronomical range of other treats. A SPECIAL HIDDEN MENU which is accessed by going to the ’special features’ menu and leaveing it for about 2 mins then a special Dr Corrupt symbol appears click on it for some extra hidden features Even the engrossing menus are knowing. The Gape Who Shagged Me is a DVD that should be everybody’s collection.

This is a sizable film, and people who know how to connect with true folks understand that. For people who aren’t raising teens or who objective don’t connect with kids, this movie may at first seek be trite and boring. Engage another notice, because kids really CAN do this–it isn’t honest a icy conception for a film. What tugs the heart is watching it happen (plus the music is terrific) . A variation on “To Sir With Treasure” or “Mr. Holland’s Opus” or “Finding Forrester” or “October Sky”? Determined, I guess. But WHY do producers and directors withhold creating these mountainous films, and WHY do we hold loving them? In a time when the government wants us to own schools and teachers “accountable” for the demise of our youngsters and our society, these stories present us what MANY steady teachers–and students–are doing, and it gives us hope. Glance this movie and let these kids be right to you. Objective colorful where your kids are and what they are doing isn’t enough. Somebody (you? ) will have to be there for them. THEN something marvelous can happen.

I’ve read all of the reviews on SA2 and it is quite clear this movie is not for everyone, however, if you devour “feel helpful ” movies, this is for you. The storyline iis quite predictable, the acting is superb, but the music is a scrumptious bonus, impartial wish there was more of it. I know that if I’m feeling a small down, I can pop in this movie and feel better.

Continuing to rupture original ground, Soap dived apt into a number of unusual issues for this comedy series. The site lines continued to be “out there” as Burt (Richard Mulligan) is abducted by aliens and tries to flee. On Earth Burt has been replaced by an alien who acts even stranger than before. The only one to contemplate is, of course, his wife Mary. Benson (Robert Guillaume who would soon star in his have spin-off playing his well-liked character) saves Billy (Jimmy Baio) from a cult and finally Jodie the first happy character portrayed positively on TV finds out he has a baby daughter from an affair Jodie had with a woman. In other words, all’s rotten in the world of Soap which is exactly as it should be.

Improving on the first two sets Soap: The Complete Third Season looks positively robust by comparison to the first two sets. With better clarity, image quality, sharper and better color reproduction, this residence shows that Columbia Tristar use the bulk of the marketing funds to manufacture the series eye as rich as possible for this DVD release. While there are unexcited analog imperfections (and what could you inquire of a series videotaped over twenty years ago? ), the display looks the best it ever has on DVD. Likewise, the sound also comes across with better presence than the previous space although it is muffled on a couple of episodes throughout this three disc state. Overall, CTHE have done an exceptional job of improving the video and audio quality of this series over seasons one and two.

As I said, it’s determined that most of the budget went to improving the video and audio of the series which would define the complete lack of extras. The only extras we come by here are previews for other CTHE releases. My memory isn’t always the best but it does appear as if the episodes presented here are (for the most fraction) uncut when compared to the syndicated episodes. What about vintage interviews that CTHE might have in the vaults for future sets?

Buy,Download, Or Stream Soap - The Complete Third Season! Click Here

This is the one residence where Columbia could have improved the series. Having Susan Harris, Katherine Helmond or Billy Crystal do a commentary track would have boosted the sales of this state for fans that have recorded it off TV over the years. Again, I’m obvious it was a budget pronounce.

Overall, a pleasing job from Columbia on preparing this release for DVD. Distinct it could always be better but preserve in mind that the studio has to work with the budget for each station their given. It’s sure that most of that budget went to improving the video and audio of the series. Does it leer stellar? No but it would be difficult to improve this beyond what we examine here.

Season three became even more loony then the second season and also more poignant. Absolutely hilarious storylines with Burt dominated the season for the highlights (anyone remember dancing alien Burt??? ) Richard Mulligan managed to demonstrate a astounding range of human emotion when called upon to do so.

Billy Crystal’s comedic escapades took a abet seat this season to showcase his dramatic acting abilities. In this season, he went from being the comedian to a right comedic actor with serious acting chops tackling, for the day, the tough order of contented parent rights… wait… isn’t congress not supporting pleased marriage???

Even racial undertones were tackled this season with Danny and Polly. As ever, inspired lunacy ensued in this incredible season that became even more socially and politically charged while maintaining substantial silly foils. Who can forget Chester sobbing at the door after being kick out of the house “Please Please Jessica… BAW HAW HAW…” and Dutch finding out about Jessica’s sickness “…OH GOD… WHY HER??? WHAT ARE WE GONNA DOOOO!!!!” (Sounding like the cowardly lion) and Bob’s comments to Polly’s parents, “So I hear your negros…” and I could go on and on but then you wouldn’t be confused following this next episode of soap!

Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s able direction accurately chronicles the ugliness of racism as seen through the eyes of the characters in the flick “No Contrivance Out”.

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Way Out! Click Here

Sidney Poitier is his first starring role plays dedicated and idealistic physician Dr. Luther Brooks. Poitier is working the prison ward of the county hospital when Ray Biddle played by Richard Widmark and his brother Johnny are brought in. They both had been shot in the leg by cops during a gas status heist.

Widmark, a hellacious bigot, balks when he and his brother are examined by a shadowy doctor.

Poitier becomes suspicious that brother Johnny Biddle is in worthy more dire straits than from unprejudiced a leg afflict. Fearing brain wound he performs a spinal tap but the patient expires during the device. Widmark immediately blames Poitier for killing his brother. Poitier with burly relieve of his boss Dr. Wharton played by Stephen McNally, requests an autopsy to expose the suspected presence of a brain tumor. Widmark however refuses.

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Way Out! Click Here

The brother’s ex-wife Edie played by Linda Darnell is coaxed by the doctors into changing Widmark’s mind. The situation plays out with the inferior Widmark using a third brother to mobilize their lowlife racist friends to attack the local dim neighborhood. A racial riot ensues and the hospital becomes corpulent of victims but an unsatisfied Widmark is unruffled out for blood.

“No Device Out” is a very disturbing seek at the 1950’s version of racism. The narrate is not a very aesthetic one. Both Widmark playing the wrathful dog racist and Poitier the moralistic physician gave very effective performances.

There’s nothing powerful subtle about NO Intention OUT. Two men, two brothers, are injured by the police while committing a petty crime. The men are transported to the prison ward of the county hospital, where one of the brothers dies while being treated by a young intern. The surviving brother vows mortal vengeance. The doctor needs the approval of a family member to conduct an autopsy to indicate his competence and support his conscious.

It’s a suitably sturdy set-up for what could have been an unspectacular urban melodrama. Anxiety is NO Map OUT is glowing spectacular. For starters, the young doctor is dim and the surviving brother is a virulent racist. The talent slow the movie is, to achieve it mildly, impressive. It begins with the unbelievable producer Darryl Zanuck, the motor late such thinking-person movies as The Grapes of Wrath & The Snake Pit, and who seemingly was incapable of making a dreadful movie. Joseph L. Mankiewicz wrote and directed this movie, and though nominated for an 1951 Oscar for Best Director lost out to himself when he won it for another, noteworthy different, classic, All About Eve.

Message movies have a tendency to collapse under their apt weightiness. NO Method OUT is a movie with a social conscious, but it, for the most fragment, steers definite of the pulpit. Richard Widmark is perfectly cast as the racist Roy Biddle, who is quite possibly the most loathsome major character in film history. Sidney Poitier, in his first movie, brings unbiased the true blend of intelligence and dignity to his share as the young physician under the gun. Rounding out this recent triangle is Linda Darnell as the ex-wife of the tedious brother.

NO Draw OUT is an unhappy movie to seek. Roy Biddle is a vocal racist, and he uses objective about every grisly name in the book, loudly and often. There are some scenes of the Beaver Canal group, Biddle’s cronies, preparing to attack the gloomy portion of town, that are nightmarish. Linda Darnell, the car-hop girl who belief she’d crawled away from Beaver Canal, comes across as an almost tragic figure. This is an shiny, driving movie, with some scenes that might not be appropriate for young children. The Warner Brothers print is in very profitable condition, and, as always, the man who can name every actor in history, and has anecdotes to relieve him up, Eddie Muller’s commentary track enhances the experience.

Francis Ford Coppola and Paramount Home Entertainment held a press conference and street beautiful in Brooklyn, and yours truly was there! The captivating news, of course, was announcing the release of THE GODFATHER DVD COLLECTION on October 9, 2001! If the preview of the dwelling is any indication, then I must say this will be the crown jewel in any DVD collection!

The three films will only be released together in this situation. The Godfather and The Godfather Share III will each be on one disc, and The Godfather Share II will prefer two discs. The first of the edifying news? Francis Coppola has recorded full-lenth audio commentaries for all three films!

But wait, there’s a fifth disc that will blow your socks off! Check this out — the bonus disc contains 3+ hours worth of special features, including: > “The Godfather Family: A Peruse Inside” documentary > “Francis Coppola’s Notebook”, an inside contemplate at taking the book to shroud! > “On Dwelling” with production designer Dean Tavoularis! > “The Godfather Leisurely The Scenes” 1971 featurette! > “The Cinematography of The Godfather”! > “The Music of The Godfather” — two featurettes! > “Coppola and Puzo on Screenwriting”! > Storyboards from GF2 and GF3! > “The Corleone Family Tree” character and cast bios! > Academy Award® acceptance speeches! > Photo galleries with captions! > Theatrical trailers! > Filmmaker bios! > Corleone Family timeline, with real-life events mixed in! > Never-seen alternate opening of GF3! > And “all” of the extra footage found in the televised Godfather Saga!

The narrate quality looked astounding — Coppola’s American Zoetrope did a astonishing job restoring the films! From what I could enlighten, the sound quality was perfect, and the on-screen menus looked colossal. And the DVD packaging looks very nice.

All three films are in widescreen format with English 5.1 surround sound, French mono, and English subtitles.

Perhaps the only “unpleasant” news I heard was that there were no plans at this point to release the chronological version on DVD. Francis said that the films were meant to be seen with the flashbacks, and I tend to agree. The biggest plus of having The Godfather Trilogy or Anecdote on tape, or watching The Godfather Saga on TV, was all the extra footage included. Well, the bonus disc in The Godfather DVD Collection contains “all” of the extra footage, and even something we’ve never seen anywhere before: an alternate opening for The Godfather Portion III. Francis didn’t give a firm “no” though; he cited technical reasons for not being able to include all the extra footage on DVD: the different scenes are in various levels of production (”they weren’t mixed and scored”), making it difficult to add them seemlessly with today’s technology. Maybe, but they seemed to be okay in the boxed sets and on TV to me.

Do yourself a favor and order the biggest DVD release of all time!

This is gonna be expansive!! I can’t wait! Amazon doesn’t yell you what you’re getting, so here is the scoop as I know it …

The Godfather Trilogy is ONLY going to be released as a box situation! (though I suspect that down the road you will be able to hold them individually)

The trilogy will hasten across four discs, with GODFATHER II on two discs, and all are in anamorphic widescreen with running audio commentary from Francis Ford Coppola.

The fifth disc will feature 3+ hours worth of bonus material, including Coppola’s notebook on adapting the Mario Puzo current for the shroud

My 28 month venerable discovered “Charlie & Lola” videos while visiting Grandpa and Grandma in AZ (we checked them out from the local library down there) . When we returned home, we were disappointed to not obtain “Charlie & Lola” at our library or any local stores. We initially were fair looking for a single DVD, but found the box region. It is a enormous value! Amazon had the best heed, plus our order arrived in less than 4 days (over a weekend!) . Thank you for the substantial customer service and genuine value! We recommend “Charlie & Lola” to everyone–pleasant music, comical legend lines, and cute characters. My niece and nephew (6 & 8 years archaic) unruffled appreciate to peruse them when they advance to visit.

My twin granddaughters are enchanted by Charlie & Lola. They giggle with them and hum along to the theme music. The stories succor caring about each other, sharing, cooperating and compassion; to say nothing of creativity and fantasy play. I have to say this is the best discovery ever!

Here’s a movie for dog lovers, the elderly, children of divorce, FOBs (Friends of Birds), mature Boy Scouts, people yearning for adventure, and anyone who has ever loved… and lost. Up is for everyone. It made me laugh out loud, and it made me scream.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

I view it would be tough for Up to match the emotional power of Wall-E. The two Pixar films are similar in their lack of dialogue in the first act, which helps deepen the emotional impact. Up begins with Carl, a timid young boy star-struck by a noted explorer; and kookie Ellie, who has a similar obsession. The two kids become speedily friends, and mutter to one day move to Venezuela’s Paradise Falls. After getting married, they select their dream home and fix it up, hoping to own it with children. Carl and Ellie’s life together from childhood through dilapidated age is depicted, silently, with delicacy and subtlety. The first 15 minutes is like a celebration of a glad marriage, and you truly feel Carl’s afflict when he is left alone. He sits slumped in his chair, talking to the house as if it is the missing Ellie.

When developers stop in on Carl’s beloved home, he decides to fulfill his promise to Ellie and go to Paradise Falls. A old balloon vendor, Carl lifts his home with hundreds of brilliant balloons. Stowing away on the porch is Russell, a bulky, dauntless kid trying to acquire a scouting badge.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Up! Click Here

After landing in Paradise Falls, the worn man and the miniature boy are joined by a golden retriever named Dug who can talk with his collar, and a tremendous rare bird that bonds with Russell (he names her “Kevin”) . Dug is priceless: spot-on for every dog that ever lived, including an obsession with squirrels. Through a series of discontinuance calls and adventures, the quartet vanquishes a villain, saving the day. And Russell earns his scouting badge.

In the process, Carl learns to let go of his dark mourning for Ellie, and live life again. When this happens, a truly magical thing happens. Before, Carl’s craggy face is gray and monochromatic. At the moment of his transformation, Carl’s face is awash in color, and he is surrounded by elegant hues. It reminded me of The Wizard of Oz, when Dorothy steps out of her gray world and into a candy-colored Munchkinland. Carl, too, enters a whole recent world.

Up is a deeply emotional film, pudgy of truth. It’s the year’s best film. Get another triumph for Pixar.

Someday, Pixar is going to do it — they’re going to effect an emotionally uninspiring, lackluster gripping movie. But in the meantime, they’re quiet putting out toothsome arresting movies like “Up,” which defies the usual kid-movie conventions by starring a crotchety ragged man. It’s a charming, fun minute adventure yarn with flying dogs and balloon-powered houses, but underlying it is a bittersweet puny narrative about loss and treasure.

As a child, the disquieted Carl Fredricksen bonded with the oddball Ellie over their shared like of adventure, the explorer Charles Muntz, and Paradise Falls. They later married, travel into their “clubhouse” together, and lived a long, sadly childless life together. When Ellie died, she had never fulfilled her dream of going to Paradise Falls.

Now crotchety, alone and harassed by a accurate estate developer, Carl (Ed Asner) is finally ordered to a retirement home. But he isn’t going quietly — instead he attaches thousands of balloons to his house and floats it away toward South America. But he accidentally takes an involved, naive Wilderness Explorer (a thinly-veiled Boy Scout) named Russell (Jordan Nagai) along for the flow. Terrible kid was impartial trying to gather an “assisting the elderly” badge.

And the jungle rush to Paradise Falls turns out to have some surprising obstacles: a mountainous emulike bird that Russell names Kevin, a talking dog named Dug (”I am jumping on you, bird!”), and a mysterious frail man who lives deep in the heart of the jungle. Turns out the former guy is very familiar to Carl — and to steal Kevin, he’s willing to sacrifice Carl and Russell.

Industry experts were babbling about how “Up” wouldn’t be as celebrated as the previous Pixar movies, because the protagonist is basically a crusty archaic coot. Well, shows what they know. It ended up becoming one of those classic movies that somehow appeals to all ages — while the humor and action appeal to children, adults can luxuriate in Carl’s worship for his lost wife, and his dull realization that he’s clinging to the past.

In fact, the first ten minutes are some of the most heart-tugging, quietly bittersweet scenes I’ve seen in a long time. Without a word, they demonstrate all the ups and downs of a realistic marriage — joys, sorrows (Ellie’s inability to have children), growing venerable together, and finally loss.

But it’s not a depressing movie by any stretch — in fact, it’s like a childhood fantasy near to life, complete with a floating house suspended on hundreds of balloons, and biplanes piloted by a talking dog army.. Plenty of gargantuan dialogue (”Do you want to play a game? It’s called View Who Can Go the Longest Without Saying Anything.” “Chilly! My mom loves that game!”) and an action-packed climax in an primitive airship.

Ed Asner is absolutely perfect as ubergrouch Carl — crotchety, grumpy, and positive to fulfill his wife’s lifelong dream, but gradually realizing he’s clinging to the past. Nagai is equally perfect as Carl’s polar opposite: a naive, chattery Scout who is obvious to reunite Kevin with her baby chicks. And the utterly adorable Dug and the other dogs deserve special perceive. These creatures are utterly hilarious — they talk (”I hid under your porch because I savor you”) and act the contrivance dogs would if they talked. Three words: cone of shame.

The two-disc edition is going to have some very nice extras, but once again people with regular-def DVDs are going to catch shafted because the Blu-ray edition will have a bunch of weird stuff. Grr. As for this one, there’s a digital copy, the director’s audio commentary, kinda-alternate-ending “The Many Endings of Muntz,” and the documentary “Adventure Is Out There” about the research for this movie.

There are also a pair of adorable interesting shorts. “Partly Cloudy” has a much-abused stork having to bellow potentially wrong baby creatures from a kind but clueless cloud. And “Dug’s Special Mission” is a sort of backstory for the adorable Dug, explaining what the heck he was doing before he met up with Carl and Russell.

“Up” continues Pixar’s running tally of gloriously bewitching, emotionally layered movies that the entire family can appreciate. With that, I have only one more thing to say… SQUIRREL!

This movie is actually a filmed version of a play and this is certain in the viewing; the director doesn’t earn spend of all the potential of the medium, it’s filmed all in one lift (unbiased as a play goes from inaugurate to attain in one go), and the scene transitions are abrupt and terrible. That being said, this film deserves no other criticism; it is certainly the finest I’ve ever seen and, I would argue, a spacious movie in the English cinema. What makes it deserve such praise is that the acting is all very convincing and compelling, the costumes and staging are sublime and the script is, simply effect, shimmering. The novel title of the work fuctions as an edifying summary: “The assasination and persecution of Jean-Paul Marat as performed by the inmates of the asylum at Charenton under the direction of the Marquis de Sade.” Area in the Napoleonic era eighteen years after the French Revolution, the Marquis (imprisoned for both political and sex crimes) directs the mentally ill inmates in a stylized recreation of the execute of Jean-Paul Marat (a rabid Jacobin, confined to his bathtub by a skin disease, who wrote the most sanguinary Revolutionary propaganda) by Charlotte Corday (from a friendly background, but actually a partisan of the Girondin Revolutionaries who had been purged by Marat’s party) . This is a highly cerebral play and, although the scrip (a translation of Peter Wiess’ play) takes a very few liberties with the historical facts, a knowledge of the Revolution greatly helps in plan and appreciating this sometimes obscure movie. There are dependable knowing pyrotechnics in the debates between Marat and de Sade, and the Marat’s monologues are filled with comely revolutionary polemics. Corday is very well played, and her scenes are some of the most emotionally intense. The shimmering script, which doesn’t shrink from tackiling enormous Ideas, combined with the spacious execution obtain this a estimable movie. Or rather film.

This 1966 film depicts the Marquis de Sade’s imprisonment in a mental asylum and a play that he directs using the other inmates as actors. The sage of Sade was recently related in “Quills,” and that film is somewhat similar in tone, but not space. Occupy it or not, the film is also a musical! The “play” within the movie chronicles events from the French Revolution pertaining to Marat, and is establish on for the asylum’s leader and the local gentry. The local gentry are terrorized at times, and the asylum leader interrupts the play several times with interjections concerning the play’s radical ideas and how the gentry are depicted. As the play reaches its culmination, the inmates inevitably commence to stage their maintain revolution. The action is often confusing, but the emotions conveyed are so intense, that the film can be enjoyed on a visceral level.

The direction of this film is quite smart, and it must have been aesthetic hideous when it was released 36 years ago. The acting is also very intense and realistic. Glenda Jackson has her starring debut here and is quite sharp, considering that she’s playing a mental asylum inmate. The only quibble I have with the DVD is the dreadful sound quality. Even on DVD, the sound is muddled and the actor’s dialogue is often unintelligible, especially during the songs. Unfortunately, the DVD does not include captions/subtitles, which would have helped immensely (there are no other extras either) . A very worthwhile movie that could have been presented better on this DVD.
